I think it is the most appropriate thing to play on an organ. I can definitely imagine walking through an amusement park and hearing this on an old organ inside a Carousel. What could be more American?
It was filmed at First United Methodist Church in Wichita Falls, Texas. The video is from the organ dedication concert (79-rank Garland Pipe Organ) played by Dr. George Baker on September 19, 2003.
Hard to believe how many people I still run into who've never heard of Scott Joplin until they hear this number. Then they say, "Hey! that's the song from The Sting!"
That sounds excellent! I would think I was listening to a Wurlitzer theatre organ! You really make that song sound great, especially with the deep base registration towards the end. Thanks for posting!
absolutly amazing and being on a 79 rank pipe organ, it makes it sound even better. YAYEAH its soo great, and i can almost play it on a grand piano its soo difficult lol
Under his feet are a full set of pedals, these pedals mirror the keyboard above(some organs if you sit right, when you look down at middle C and the surrounding notes the bass pedals are in line[at least on ours]) you play the bass with your feet basically as said above Also the main panel that he's adjusting often is a sort of volume control/dampener, you often get 2, 1 for the swell and the 2nd for the great, maybe a third on some organs for the bass so that you can add your own effects Dak's
All you purists need to quit griping when somebody improvises on existing techniques. There is no right or wrong in improvisation. In the end, it's what people like and what sounds good! We know this isn't the way Scott Joplin intended his rags to sound. But it's a nice twist on the same Entertainer we've heard for decades. Kudos to George Baker!
First, I believe that those who are ragging on Mr. Baker are forgetting that music invites interpretation. This is Mr Baker's interpretation of the piece, played in a stride-jazz style, every bit as legitimate as the original score. Stop ragging him for his interpretation. Opinion on whether he should do it on a 79-rank pipe organ is also specious. How can you say that the organ is not built for this music? Was the organ built for a Bach or Beethoven piece? No. It was built to play music upon.
Ragtime, my friend, was a step towards jazz it had more of a freeform style then older music but it still hangs on to some of the traditional music theory. Also ragtime is based heavily on syncopation("overlaping" of melodys, so to speak). However many concepts of jazz are also present in ragtime such as swinging of eigth notes and, as previously mentioned, a more freeform style. It does differ from jazz however, there's no improv and also its supposed to be
@hatfm It's a church organ actually...they are voiced differently than a theater organ. Also the console appearance differs. Church organs usually have the traditional pull stops lined up in columns, where as a theater organ console has the stop buttons as levers lined up in rows...usually in an arch. Theatre organs usually have more vibrato and generally have a 'thicker' sound as they have many more ranks of pipes. Church organs have a more presence or a 'forward' sound.
You know what? It was written for piano. And now it is beeing played on organ. So, if you want to change the instrument you can. If you want to swung it a little bit - it's ok. Do you find also anything bad in for example playing it with legs?
this organ is huge... this guy is good, i started learning the organ like a year ago and the feet are hard although he should better use of his bazillion manuals
Just ran across this: I love Scott Joplin. This was definitely a fun version. His pedal work is picking up what on the piano is handled by the left hand. Definite advantage on an organ!
EXCELLENT .... YOU REMIND ME OF VIRGIL FOX AT THE FILMORE EAST ...............................................................................................................................
@patrickjf100 or you can just go to your local chuch during the week when there arent that many people there and ask them if you can use their organ to play for a little wile and in most cases they will let you play :D

Battle Hymn of the Republic sounds great on the organ as well
I never thought that The Entertainer would sound so great at the organ! Congratulations!
Brings it out so beautifully in tune ! Listen to this with 8 speakers and a sub woofer connected up to a computer ! Wowee awesoome !
I like how the camera is placed to show the organist's footwork.
my great grandma always played the entertainer to me on piano and organ when i was a little girl... brings back memories...
This is an amazing performance. My eyes couldn't believe what he was doing with his feet and hands all at the same time!
Thank you.. Over and over . may your day stay in the light....
WOW! That is INCREDIBLE! #OMG
This is already an incredible piece, and now it's played on my favorite instrument!!!!!!
AWESOME and truly inspiring! I think it's an incredible feat to make a rag-time 2 step sound so amazing on a pipe organ!

"The Entertainer" is my favorite Joplin-composition. Thank you so much. I also like the performance by OK-Dreamband (iTunes or amazon for example).
It is a great piece this music, and seeing it heard on this organ is so cool. George Baker does a good job. top stuff. Cheers.
this is the best version of it so far
Hard to believe how many people I still run into who've never heard of Scott Joplin until they hear this number. Then they say, "Hey! that's the song from The Sting!"

I love these old theater organs. :)
Great job!!! I like it. Something special on pipe organ

When I was twelve, I played The Entertainer on the second oldest organ in the western hemisphere.
I ahh.. never .... thought ...I'd hear a RAG on a huge (REAL) PIPE ORGAN....WOW! Joplin is finally smiling down at us! 👍😊👍💕💕💕
I love this song!
This video ia awesome! I am playing the piano, and the piece I am playing is by Scott J.
I am also playing The Entertainer!!!

All of your dont's sound like excellent fun.
This is hilarious! I love it! I don't know why it's so funny, but I died laughing at this.

Well played! Personalty I think ragtime sounds great on organ or piano.
maravilhosa execuçaõ! linda música!
I heard this one Chinese pianist also swung this piece when he played it, though, his tempo was not constant.
Every ice cream truck should have a mini organ in it being played by a George Baker replica.
So powerful instrument. And it's so hard to play it.
On an organ you can play with your feet, too.
Usally you play the bass with pedals.
Honestly, it says its rag-time, however i don't believe you are limited to it, style my friend...
I love it swung.
oh God... :))
Now this is what I call multitasking
とても上手です!
私、この曲大好きなんです♡
パイプオルガンですよね?
楽しい気分になりたいとき、またここへ来ますね★
whats that guy standing there for lol, i'd go to church just to hear this being played
Királyság... :D
Congrats my dude, you just 1000 subs!!

@UknoiRock That, and you also have to consider the organist's choosing of style.

Great Sir.
that guy looks like my boss!!! freaky

pipe organs are played with hands and feet at the same time
This may be the greatest thing since Don Preston played Louie Louie on the Albert Hall organ.
Sounds like a jazz version.
lol this is cool ^^
x
to right
Whoa this video came out when TH-cam started to become wide spread
this organ is huge... this guy is good, i started learning the organ like a year ago and the feet are hard although he should better use of his bazillion manuals
He is turning the pages so that the organ player doesn't have to stop and do it himself.
I thought the guy standing behind him was to catch any flyaway notes ! j/k
=0 omfg!!
Montefusco1, where's your video?
This reminds me of the 1940s carnival or something... :D
in organ music, how do they record the pedal notes?
Just ran across this: I love Scott Joplin. This was definitely a fun version. His pedal work is picking up what on the piano is handled by the left hand. Definite advantage on an organ!
Man, that must require a lot of coordination! It makes my head hurt thinking about how you memorize all that.
Good job, that's like a workout right there, not easy at that age, cut him some slack for the occasional imperfection!
@ desiderius2
but of course they do! .)
Certainly an interesting adaptation! I'd love to listen to it performed for instance by Olivier Latry on the illustrous ND of Paris organ...
@tophatbill I agree, this is the perfect speed for this piece.
I would dasume this man is popular in Japan.
EXCELLENT .... YOU REMIND ME OF VIRGIL FOX AT THE FILMORE EAST
