Really enjoyed this video, just got a 50s Johnson seahorse 10 my self it’s my first outboard. I wish my grandpa lived close enough for us to remodel it together.
This reminded me so much of my brother and I. We had a bevy of nice old engines, mainly Johnsons and Evinrudes. We weren't collecting them at the time, those oldies were the only ones we could afford. Back in the the 60-70's we picked them up for a song, fixed them up and used them then sold them. My favorite of all was a Johnson 18 hp, made in the early 60s. We would throw that in the trunk of his car, go to the Everglades and rent a sturdy johnboat and roar down those canals for miles. Thanks.
These engines are beautiful, great collection. I remember when most of them were made. Sadly, our great outboard makers are disapearing for the same reason our car companies are. U.S. citizens are buying Japanese. I never, never will do that. I see more Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda and other non U.S. outboards each year. Johnson, Evinrude and all of our wonderful makers are gone with the exception of good old Mercury. They are still hanging in there. I have a nice 1957, Mercury Mark 20, 16 hp. Looks and runs great.
Thanks for sharing your collection of outboards. I remember the British Seagull was favored by sailors as an auxiliary motor. They were advertised in sailing magazines.
Delmont Industries LTD hey man I got an 85 15 horse Johnson and I’m trying to find the cowling/cover gasket or seal but I can’t find it anywhere any advice?
This was so enjoyable to watch! I have had a fascination with small outboards since I was a child, and that continues to this day. Thank you for posting this!
...I know this guy! He and his son own Moffitt's Ford in Boone, IA. Didn't know he had these old outboards up at the lake...gonna go see him Memorial Day weekend!
back in 79 I bought a 3 hp Johnson that was advertised as no nicks or scratches, and was perfect , 100 $ sold it with a 18 ft sailboat,, but ran like a caddy, they were made in Belgium if I remember correctly
I just got a 1958 8hp westbend it was made by elgin for sears I bought it to sell it but I LOve it, it was ahead of its time throtle on the tiller shifter on a dashboard looking face dash lights up. Im keeping it I enjoy these older outboards they were like art,
Wow, real nice collection of vintage motors, you and your son must get a lot of enjoyment working together on them! My dad taught me everything I know about engines, get a lot of enjoyment working on them myself. He used to have a 1960 Johnson 5.5, wishes he'd kept it to share with me. We found a 1959 18hp, nice white trim, have it all apart to paint white, hope we'll get to reassembling it sometime soon. I helped my neighbor get his 'Holiday Bronze' 1956 Johnson 30HP Javelin running a few years ago after sitting more than 35 years in their boat house, real proud of that! He's letting me use it on my boat for the time being until he finds a boat to put it on, real nice of him. I made a great movie of it, check it out. The older they are, the better I like 'em. Glad you're keeping 'em running, they may be oldies, but they sure are goodies! Cheers, Bellarmine
Thanks for sharing yur motr collection. I have a real cool 54 Elgin I baught about 15 years ago from the original owner. I event have all the paper work with it. I tuned it up and replaced the impellar and she purrs. My brother has a 56 Johnson 3 hr and it's in mint condition. We used to use our motors when we first got them and now they just sit like a bottle of wine. I think it's time to fire them up soon. Thanks again. Rich
Awesome collection! Own #1 and #4. My '67 green and white is the last year for built in tank. Near mint! And my 1968 Evinrude is Ist year of remote tank. The sales flyer says "The year of the range". Both are folders with cases. Cheers!
Brazil, William Correa really like your program was born in 1947, I know most brands of motors that appears there, I really miss that time know all the programs of Mr. and am very glad that the time would come back, as it is not possible, and satisfaction in seeing your program.
One of my brothers has a green Johnson 5 made just after WWII. Unfortunately, OMC discontinued the ignition coils for it and we never did get it to run properly. If it were just a couple of years newer we'd have been able to get coils and it would still be in use today.
I bought my 1956 5.5 Johnson seahorse for a couple hundred last spring. Stuck it on my fishing boat and it purred like a kitten for me last yr. My dad who's 67 said good buy there really good buy
I just bought my jw16 last week, 350.00 south jacksonvile, FL with original stand, all documentation and manuals. I just bought all the parts to rebuild it too. So I'd say there's a market. I love it and will enjoy working on restoring it and using it with my 4 year old.
I just started working on a 1957 merc 500 short shaft.......having trouble finding any repair books.....can you suggest anything?.,...has no spark......been sitting 15 years indoor.
we have a 56 year Johnson 7.5 horse seahorse, Model no. ad-10 It's been in a wood box along with a metal gas tank for it , It still looks new to me, don't know if it runs or not, it was last licensed in 1974. What is this worth ?
My first Outboard was a 7-1/2 Scott Atwater $20 Ha.. my Father bought me a 1948 3 hp Goodyear Still have it. He is now leaving me a 1924-26 ? With Cast Iron Opposing Cyl. I believe it's a 8 Hp. ! I hope my son builds me a Boat Transom table I can mount it on in my LIVING ROOM 😊
I have a 1959 Johnson 5.5, runs like new, someone put a fuel pump on it which I like, I also have a 1967 Evinrude Lightwin and someone put a fuel pump on that so I can use the same OMC tank for both, when Americans really made things

There built to last . After all its not made in china . It was at a time then america made some good products .evinrude and johnson made some good one in the old days . I use to own a 5 horse clinton outboard motor . But now im going to buy a older evinrude after seing that the newer outboards are made in china . All three of the major outboard makers do the same thing . One company in china makes them all for the three major outboard makers now .
Beautiful collection
