My 1998 Ford F-150 Lariat Was A Luxury Truck Before They Were Mainstream! Dude, I Love My Ride @Home

- In this video, Kyle shows us around his remarkably clean 1998 Ford F-150 Lariat. With a two-tone paint scheme, hints of chrome and a leather interior, this truck was more luxurious than most - especially before luxury trucks were that mainstream. Even before the Lincoln Blackwood, Mark LT and today's luxurious trucks, Ford was showing a new direction with this F-Series.

I'm not a Ford guy, but that truck is clean! She's a beauty, congrats
Thanks I’m loving it so far
You think that's clean, you should look at a ninth generation.
These 97-2003 F-150s Bring Back Memories 😊
I Remember All Of Those Days As A Kid When My Grandpa Drove His 99 F150 All Around
(White And Silver Lariat 5.4 V8 Triton) It Always Blew Out Sparkplug Plugs Till 2015
After It Blew Its Last Plug, It Sat For 6 Years, And Now Its Back On The Road Running Like A Champ!
10th Gen F150s Rock!
You've never owned one then!
At least this guy had some enthusiasm compared to most others who send in their videos cheers to him
Haha thanks Nathan. Truthfully I’m still excited about the truck so hopefully that showed with the vid
Great 👍 looking truck ! This body style Ford executives considered as the Ford Taurus of pickup trucks with the rounded edges ( body style ) . I used to own a 2002 super crew cab with a 4.6 V8 . I had noo issues with it. CHEERS 🍻
@@andregonsalvez9244 To be honest I can get that, but to me it looks great in the right spec with the right paint, wheels, and tires. However I'm biased obviously haha
@@kylehamm7287 👍
0:48 Who cares what other people like. You're not buying a truck for other people. You're buying a truck for you, so it only matters what you like.
Haha thanks man.
I’m under the same mindset but I just thought it would be cool to highlight it’s somewhat unpopularity in the vid
I hated that body style when it first came out because I was always used to the square body trucks which I own. But looking at some of today’s trucks this body style grew on me. Nice find 👍
Same here. Now I own one lol
Same at the time i thought what a dump truck. But now i really enjoy seeing them on the road
Same not a big fan of the front end but the sides really do look cool.
@@Zach-ju5vi Thought the front end looked like a Taurus on steroids! Didn't fit on a truck. Never did like those body styles and Ford must have detected a problem as they didn't continue that theme with the next model.
@@JamesThompson-ol3eu I don’t mind the front end, but the rear end, especially on the crew-cabs and the flare sides, was terrible imo
Beautiful truck, love the colors, you can tell the mature gentleman that owned it treated it with great care, my barber has a 5.4 just turned 300k, not nearly as well maintained as this truck. $6,500 was a steal in this condition!!!👍👍👍 kind of makes me sick no one in the family loved the truck like the original owner, you have a heirloom there my friend.
Yeah I thought the same thing. Can’t believe no one in the family wanted it but oh well. I’m here to take care of it now
@@kylehamm7287 it’s a beaut! I hope you enjoy as much as he did. By the way, you did a great job on the video, I really enjoyed it, your a natural👍👍👍
Best looking truck for the age, havent seen one this good in years
I bought one new in 97 lariat fully decked out, it was a great truck!
THIS is what you should have bought for the under 5000 half-ton challenge from Ford Dodge and Chevy. This is a direct competitor.
I believe this generation of F150 is what Roman wanted for the cheap truck challenger with the dodge and Chevy but they couldn’t find a good enough example. To be honest I was hoping they’d get one like mine so I could see what they did to theirs...
I love it, I have a 1998 that I. bought new in Sept 1997, it has 256k miles and still runs great, I’d love to have another one like you just purchased, great truck!
Get the body and frame fluid filmed asap! Do that and it'll last a lot longer.
My dad bought one of these brand new in 1997, the f250 light duty version very rare! It was that beautiful green color and my favorite truck ever!! Nice find my friend 👍
Hey sorry, I just bought mine. It’s a f250 burgundy and 1997 as well. I can’t really find information about it. Do you know if it’s rare?
@@danigarcia304 hey that's cool, I really do think they're pretty rare especially now. One downside to them is that they didn't make them for long so some of the F-250 specific parts are difficult to find
Looks like a new truck. I commend the last owner for taking such care and he must’ve loved that truck. If it were in front of me I would give you your money back and park it in my garage. You definitely lucked out when you found this one!
Nice pickup! I'm a Chevy guy but I appreciate all trucks. The older the better. Not many of this vintage in the shape yours is in. $6500 is a great deal.
nice score...my father had one just like this same color and everything...he loved that truck
Awesome truck, always nice to see this generation in great condition. I had to a 2001 true blue supercab XLT 4.6l V8 loved the body style, traded it in for a 2004 cat eyed Chevrolet Silverado ext cab with the 5.3l V8 both trucks were great. Loved those eras of trucks no bs infotainment screens and not overly bulky trucks.
I’m with you I loved it this body style. I have 2003 supercrew fx4. It has the center console bucket seats. It runs like new. I only have 124k miles. I’m never going to trade it in. It’s really good truck
had a supercrew 03 fx4, miss my everyday.
My Dad still has pretty much the exact same truck. 2000 lariat extended cab with off road package. Been a great rig. Yours is a perfect specimen. I've slid all over those seats as well lol!
Beautiful truck, I ordered a new 97 lariat which was the first year of that body there was such a waiting list I had to wait for months to get mine.
My bro was working for a Ford dealer back in 2017 and got one of these, only it was a green '01 XLT, and had 96k miles. He got it for $6500. He had decided he was going to drive it till he ran it into the ground, but that happened literally and he rolled it off a slick road about a year into owning it. It wasn't even my truck but seeing one of these this nice makes me feel sad now 🤪
I have my eye on a few of these awesome old trucks, so thanks for the video. I like this body style too, but you're right, not everyone does!
Beautiful old trucks
The first luxury truck was the Ford F-150 Eddie Bauer Edition.
That's true I believe there was a king ranch too maybe introduced 99 or 2000 model year
i would say the first gen sierra denali was the first true 'luxury' truck just because that's what it was designed as not just a upgraded trim level like the eddie bauer was
More luxurious was the Harley Davidson with super charged
Thanks guys. As soon as I updated this video I forgot about the Eddie Bauer edition and thought doh
@@ChrisN85420 if it wasn’t for the success of the Eddie Bauer line ( Explorers, F-150, Expedition) there would be no Denali.
Now it’s a 12k truck for no reason other than artificial inflation. Love it!
I also love this generation F150. Yes I believe those were the top tier wheels. I love seeing them on the 4x4 trucks and expeditions. I’ve owned 4 of these generation trucks and SUV’s. Currently have a 99 Expedition 4x4 for off-roading. These are great trucks! Congrats and hopefully 100’s of thousands of miles of travel for you!
That is the perfect example of an affordable 4x4 truck! Good find sir.
Thanks Brendan, I’m really happy with it
Yup my uncle bought a brand new one like that Lariat super comfortable and the radio had really good bass
My dad had a 98 regular cab flareside with the 4.6, thing was bulletproof, I have a soft spot for the 10th gen F-150. This one's a beauty
Dont buy into the 5.4 hate, we’ve had 3 and put over 300k. The early 2v 5.4s are great. Only thing I’d recommend is taking it to a shop if you ever do the spark plugs, a lot less stressful
You did get a screaming deal!!! Those "old man" cars/trucks are the way to go. You find an old guy who has a 20 year old vehicle that is super nice and low miles and you get yourself a really SWEET ride! I did the same 6 years ago. I bought a 2000 F150 with only 60,000 miles on it. It was an old man truck, garage kept, super clean etc.... The bed had NEVER been hauled in. Good on you sir!!!!
I’m 42 and I rather have a simple truck these new ones are way too fancy, I got a 01 gmc I’m not worry if it gets a dent or scratch why because it’s a truck
Dad had a 98 lariat flare side and i still think it was one of the best looking trucks due to all the curves! Let me drive it when I turned 16, I was quite lucky. But those seats... so slippery! Never felt like leather... more like plastic couch covers used by old blue hairs!
Nice truck man!
love the round body F150's!! my favorite bodystyle. Beautiful truck... theyre really reliable. we have 3 of these on the farm!
I just bought a 97 extended cab 4x4
She's beautiful. I had the exact, exactly the same truck color and all except a '99 model year with nerf bars instead of those running boars. Other than a coil pack failing it never once broke down. The 4x4 system works really well. Not saying it's a rock crawler but I drove mine on the sandy beaches of the Texas Coast all the way into a blizzard on top of A Basin in Colorado. I never got stuck, not once. Traded it in with 168K miles on it still running like a champ. I can't believe yours only has 114K. Hell of a find.
I had a 1998 until October of last year and I absolutely loved it. Though, I wasn't nearly as lucky to get a rust free one like yours. Mine was sold under the pretense of little to no rust but only about 5 months in I found the driver side rear quarter panel bubbled through from a really bad patch job and what made me sell the truck was a brake line rusting through and then bursting when going down a hill that ended in a lake. But...didn't stray too far. Picked up a 2010 for about what you got yours for...only difference is it just had 155,000 miles.
Luv the 10th gen, very sleek in styling. It’s better looking than the current F-Series. I have a 2003 SVT Lightning and I freakin luv it!!
My 99 has 108k! My white paint is starting to peel pretty bad though.
Truck is in great condition, I had one too only the F250 version in red. Drove it for a year then a 99 F350 Super Duty followed.
BRO! Cassette tapes! lol. I don't even know where my old cassettes are.
Hate to admit but I’m actually making mix tapes for the truck. I know I can get a cassette adapter and use my phone but the process brings me back to the late 80’s
@@kylehamm7287 if you really wanted also you can pickup a $15 FM to bluetooth adapter for your cig lighter(12v) outlet. I did it for my gfs 04 nissan altima because she complained about not havint BT capability.
My dad still has all his cassettes. Most still work but my truck doesn't have the orginal radio so I can't really listen to em other than being in my house I have a player. Love some def Leppard
Beautiful rig. I love it
One of the cleanest F-150’s in that body style that I have ever seen. Inside and out!
Had an ‘01 just like but only had a 4.6 & a floor shift 4X4! Paid for itself twice over! Loved it!
Bought a 1998 ford f150 xlt. 4.6 for usd500.00 same time buying another mid suv from the same dealer. The truck had 220,000 miles on it when I bought it in 2016. Still driving strong with 237,000 miles. Really like this truck and served me with lots of hauling. 10th generation f150 was one of the best and reliable truck you can find every where
I love this body style of f150. She's a beaut, treat her well.
I have a 2000 F150 with zero rust! 110,000 miles. Regular cab, full size box. Beautiful red truck.
That's a clean looking truck. I agree with you on the running boards and the leather seats.
Get some seat covers that might help with the seats.
So clean, and 3 years + 1/2 the mileage of my Expedition. Love the front bench seat and not having a console. She could last another 20!
I’m hoping so. I love the front bench too, just wish it was in cloth
0:43 $6,500... That's a good deal!
Thanks David, I thought so too
Nice truck. I love mind also. I have a 1998 Ford also. It was my dad's. I have 204,000 on it. He used it for many years on the farm and traveling to work. I have put a lot of money in it for repairs lately. Most everything that is wearing out is common things that break with an old truck.
My dad bought a 2002 lariat in 2020 but my my dad pass away in 2021 and I took the truck he bought it with 131,890 miles. So far I have 170k on it. Super good truck.
My favorite trucks are the 1997-2003 F-150s as they are not bulky nor square and they look modern. Your truck looks nearly brand new! I have a 2000 F-150 7700-series (it is a factory light 3/4-ton model with 7-bolt wheels).
As for having a floor shifter for the transfer case, that is silly! The dash mounted transfer case switch is the best! I have 166,000 and use it for snow plowing without issue. A floor shifter simply wastes floor space.
Remove your ugly aftermarket steering wheel cover, it makes the steering wheel too thick! Besides, your truck came with a factory installed leather steering wheel cover.
As for your running boards, I like them as the design of them lends well to the design of the truck body. An old-man looking running board are the straight extruded aluminum (or aluminum diamond plate) that you buy at the farm supply store that have been available since the early 1980s. Perhaps somebody sprayed Armor-All on the rubber step which would make it very slippery.
So nice! Really love these vids!
My friend bought this identical truck brand new as I purchased the XLT version, I was blown away once he told me that he paid 10k more than I had, it came with a bunch of extra bells and whistles although I was perfectly content with the XLT and preferred to put that extra money to work in other meaningful ways, 401k, mortgage, etc
Love those trucks! What a find! I like that the owner kept the stock radio too, putting new radios in that dash looks out of place. Plus the horn is cool too, i like keeping those old memories alive! Even though it's older than the truck, it still sorta fits, especially with a tape deck.
Pretty sure that was the top trim level for the F150 at the time also, the eddie bauer packages were higher, but they were only on the explorer? And didn't really offer too much more in terms of features over a lariat, just sorta paint and seat stitching on top of a top spec lariat? I want to look that up now... I remember oogling over the EB trims.
I loved the EB trims on the body style before mine. For whatever reason I think they were 2wheel drive though but I could be wrong.
And having the original head unit with the cassette was really important to me when getting this one. Thanks for the nice comments
Beautiful truck!
I got a 99 Ram 1500 Laramie slt regular cab 8ft bed with the 4x4, 5spd, and the 5.9l v8, but I got a real soft spot for all these old top trim level half ton trucks, the peak of style and usability
I have a 98' F150 Lariat as well in similar condition. I love it so much! Mine is also an extended cab and I love the look, beautiful truck.
Nice truck. I have owned 3 of that series, including one that I bought at 225k, sold at 286k, and managed to make money on it.
That is one beautiful truck. I own a 1998 Ford F250 and I am happy with my truck.
I would take this trim but honestly the king ranch is the better option none the less
Beautiful. I will be getting my gray 2002 F150. Next month from an extended family member. $3,500. New engine and great maintenance records.
Nice truck! I just gave my son my 2001 GMC Sierra with 320k miles. It's got all the same features, leather, heated seats, cassette.... it drives smoother than my 2016 F150
Damn what a find !!!! Been looking for one similar but everything here in Western Canada is beaten to death....
man i miss my 10th gen f150. i had an 03 extended cab 5.4 fx4 4x4 4 door electronic 4x4 xlt (cloth fully powered seats) custom ordered with a sunroof (had to be ordered with xlt trim package), sold it with 152k miles. fantastic truck. 3.73 limited slip rear end. best truck ever for sure.
Slick seats may just be what they were cleaned with. Same seats in my truck and no issue except after its detailed. Nice truck. I would suggest getting it oil sprayed underside just to keep that surface rust in check.
Thanks for the comment. Does the surface rust on the frame need to be prepped before I get it sprayed?
I had that same truck! Bought mine slightly used in '99. Sold it in 2011 with 150k on the odometer. Little things started going wrong with it around the 130k mark. Funny to see that interior again. Such a difference from the new trucks!
I had a 2000 with the 2v 5.4L, they are super solid trucks without a doubt and the 5.4 will go forever.
Beautiful truck, I'm sure you'll be extremely happy with it! They just don't make them like they used to! Thank you for sharing.
Probably my leadt fav gen but I still like the look. My mom owns a 02 with the 4.2 v6 and she has never had any engine issues. Runs great.
Dude got a good deal on that one
Love the body style too. Found me a clean 03 King Ranch last year.
I think they really stepped up the Lariat package in the 2004+ model. Glad this guy enjoys his truck and I agree, he got a great deal! My first truck was a 2001 SCAB XLT.
That thing is GORGEOUS... Had a 97 XLT Stepside with a 4.6
I just bought a 2001 F150 lariat super crew from my grandpa, 4x4, 5.4, in dark chestnut metallic (this color was in production for about 2 or 3 months or so), and absolutely no rust. We live in the salt belt so he kept it inside during the winter and barely drove it during the summer so it only has 91k miles. I paid $10k for it.
i got one, but its a step side. bought for 500 bucks coupke years ago from my neighbor, it has 280,000 miles on it now, still runs strong, trans is a lil wonky, needs a tune up. but still clean body and everything. triton is their best motor
You got a great deal! I get 13mpg combined with my 4.6L 4x4, so 12 is just fine. I actually like the electronic 4x4 shift. I've had both styles. But you'll have to replace the shift motor at some point, which is super easy.
That’s what I payed for my 2001 Ford f150 5.4l 4x4 back in 2017 with 148,000mi. Truck is in really good shape and has no rust being a California truck. I personally never liked the 10th generation f150 until I owned one, these f150s seem to age better with time! The 5.4l 2v is a great engine.
I knew a foreman that had a 99 or 2000 F150 XLT. He had 200k miles on it in 2008. Other than vocational damage such as a bent tie rod from his son driving through bad jobsite with tracks from big trucks. My inlaws have used 4.2L for work and those base trucks were very durable w/ 5spd standard trans
That has got to be the cleanest F-150 of its era in the states!
the paint looks amazing
One of the best generations of the F Series Ever !
I love the color as well.
Old Fords Never Die!
These Old Tritons Were Built To Last! You Take Care Of Them, They Were Built To Last
I saw one for sale recently, and I am obsessed 😂😅 very sleek truck
A beautiful truck I have a 97 same color with a 4.6 still running I have so many memories in mine
Nice truck. Since it has a Buc-ees sticker on the back window, I'd say it is from Texas, which would explain the lack of rust.
Stickers are St Louis Blues and a “You Betcha” decal from another TH-cam channel I like. Truck was in Indiana all its life and I live on the Illinois side of St Louis. Tough to find anything here no rusted out
Amazingly clean truck. Congrats man and well made video too
Thanks. Not my first attempt I must admit bc my kids kept being loud in the background...
I really like that truck, take care of it brother and I hope that truck continue to give you and your family good service.
I just bought that exact same truck with the same paint for 2400 bucks, not in nearly as good of shape, but I looooooooove it.
It’s a good thing your kids are still really small. It won’t take long for them to start hating that back seat, it’s small amount of room and back rest is straight up, It’s good for around town, but not road trips for hours on end.
For some reason the bed on the crew cab was ugly to still take one but for some odd reason in this case less space gives more style
I have a 2000 f150 single cab xl 4x4 4.6. Has cab corner rust and thats it. Paint fading bad on roof but for 4k it was the best I could find. And I'm only 16 so its a ok truck.
A beauty! This body style reminds me of my childhood!
I still own my 97 F150 XLT short box flare side 4x4 with a 4.6 it has about 130,000 on it looks good and runs strong. It’s my daily driver to work.
My parents had one of these when I was very young, it rusted out pretty quick.
Cool story bro
@@AW-iz3th Thank you!
Any truck that is reliable and you do not have a monthly note on is a better truck then today’s truck.
Damn I wanted to be the first comment lol you got me @Rodney Squibb maybe next time lol love the truck
You did well, it's a nice body style but I have another preference,...who cares, it's what YOU like so that's all that matters. That's a rare find indeed to find a 'babied' vehicle these
days is, as I said, rare.
I had a 2000 model STX and, I agree, those 'running boards are downright dangerous, it's very easy to slip on those and bust your shins. ( I too am amazed tat Ford hasn't had those
removed; not enough law suits, guess )
You gotta get rid of that little restrictive o.e.m. exhaust. Getting a set of dual Flowmaster's is a good idea, that system should open up your MPG by at least 1% (hahaha), because with
that 'new ' sound it'll be difficult to keep your foot off the loud pedal, I'm thinking.
I do like the color scheme on this. My vote,..... you get a Thumbs Up here.
Hey thanks for all the GREAT comments. When I first got the truck EVERYONE who tried to get in it slipped on the running boards including my mom but that’s a given.
And I can’t wait to get some duals.
Cheers
@@kylehamm7287 You're welcome! But I do like trucks and this is one of them. Looking at that slippery leather seating is another point that needs to addressed, I mean if it were my truck. I'd take it to a upholstery shop and see if they can make some changes for you. There could be a bit of a safety concern here too with that slippery seating. If you had to apply the brakes quickly, you (or your passenger ) could very easily slide off onto the floor, not nice.
Anyway that's enough from me, enjoy your ride, and yes, I'm envious! LOL!
The late 90s trucks from GM, Ford, and Dodge were the best. They seem like they lasted the longest. A good mix of ruggedness and new technology.
