In NYC, this was WPIX-TV Channel 11 (aka "11 Alive") Action News theme during the 1970s which evolved into the Independent Network News (aka "INN") in the 1980s. More recently, it's Kaity Tong's domain.
You can clearly see these other affiliates used this and other versions too. At one time also, WPIX Channel 11 (Independent Television, WB/CW affiliate) used Al Ham's version in what... 1977?
I called WNEP’s talkback thing from Philly hoping that they eventually get rid of it. It’s annoying af and it’s been associated with Jim Gardner the longest. Basically in other words it gotta go.
I remember 6abc in Philly tried to change it in the early 2000s, and so many pissed off people called the station that they changed it back.
You don’t change things that work. It will always be part of WPVI.
It was in 1996 and yes, it was a hot mess 😂😂. They changed it back in 3 days 😂. Philadelphians spoke and they listened!
WNEP kept this, even though they're owned by Tegna since 2020
@@beetee4865 It's the official anthem of Philadelphia.
@@beetee4865 The theme was notable and it should have been used for election coverage.

I didn't realize how heavily this was used in the PA markets
lol it don’t hit the same if it ain’t WPVI
@@jbdixon4020 hits more with wnep imo but im bias to my area lol
it's been heard on at least 1 station in every single region of the state
WNEP used it in the early 80's.🤔 STILL do today in 2022!😳
Even through taking a dose of Tegnatitis.
CHANNEL 11, WPXI-TV IN PITTSBURGH
Also used in the early to mid 70’s during the WIIC years for NewsWatch and Instant News. It’d be nice to bring it back with the NBC chimes mixed in.

"Move closer to your world" is almost the unofficial song of Pennsylvania.
real
Joe Zone is an *amazing* local sports anchor name.
WTEN Channel 10 in Albany, NY, and WOKR Channel 13 (now 13WHAM) in Rochester, NY also used this music theme in the mid 1970's.
PIX 11 also used this music in the late 70s and Early 80s when Pat Harper and Steve Marsh were the anchors
In the 70s, WCIA in champaign used an excerpt from this song in their news intro
I miss the old Philadelphia growing up in the 90s!!
WSM-TV (now WSMV) in Nashville used it, and so did WHAS-TV in Louisville. WHAS examples are available on TH-cam.
WTVD ABC 11 in Raleigh/Durham used it too in the 70s
Were there any markets where this tune was never heard?
WJET in Erie also used this song for a time.
Channel 10 in Australia used this music for a short time. Would like to find some 1970s KMBC 9 openers with the Cool Hand Luke music.
WABC in NYC used the Cool Hand Luke theme in the 80s. I remember it well.
KTVU 2 in Oakland, California used this theme from 1971-1974
I used to live in the ATL area and WSB had used this theme at one point.
WNAC 7 Boston was the originator in 1970.
KPHO-TV Phoenix "Eyewitness News" - 1973-1976.
In the 1970s WPIX-TV NEW YORK used it
Jan Carson at KTRK?? That was a LONG time ago, pre-1985, because I always saw her on KPRC Channel 2, the NBC affiliate!
Late 70s I believe. She went off to San Francisco for a few years, then returned to Houston on Ch. 2.
Daphne Ordonez/Dennise Ordonez Theme Music (May 28, 2021-present)
WJLA in Washington,DC used it for their news sometime in the 70s.
The then-WMAL-TV used this theme between 1973-75, when Fred Thomas and West Sarandon (RIP) anchored "The Scene Tonight".
KXAS Fort Worth-Dallas, KRIS Corpus Christi
Buffalo, Scranton, and Philadelphia are the only markets that can get away with using MCTYW in 2024, and in fact two of them still do
Buffalo used for a really long time,. they still use it on occasion
WTNH Channel 8 New Haven Ct used it in the 80's
16 should go back to the old version.
the new one's more unique and also you can use it for more things like bumpers that don't sound drawn out
WPIX New York 1977-84
Yep I remember. Childhood memories in Brooklyn
I wonder where some of the people in the opening are today.
WKBW Buffalo needs to bring this back immediately!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WSB-TV ATLANTA 1976
channel 10 Melbourne Australia
And TEN-10 Sydney!
In WKAQ -TV Channel 2 San Juan, Puerto Rico used in 1976-83
Why is every new program either "Action News" or "Eyewitness News"? Surely they can come up with other slogans for their news shows.
This song belongs to 6abc, WPVI, Philadelphia and Jim Gardner. No one else should ever be able to use this song again.
You can clearly see these other affiliates used this and other versions too. At one time also, WPIX Channel 11 (Independent Television, WB/CW affiliate) used Al Ham's version in what... 1977?
No WKBW in Buffalo uses it on occasion!
WNEP has also been using just as long.
Amen
Wkbw Buffalo would like a word with you
WTVD Durham NC had an open similar to KFSN
You forgot WKRC-tV channel 12 in my hometown of Cincinnati!
missed one wpix action news in the late 70's early 80's
Joe Zone on sports
Were these stations all owned buy Capital Cities Communications? I know that WKBW and WPVi were.
WPVI is an O&O station
KFSN in Fresno was a Capital Cities Station, which was acquired by Disney. To this day, KFSN is a Disney O&O.
@@carsonneeley4862 - WPVI-TV was a Capital Cities station back in the day. Disney now owns it.
KTRK Houston was owned by Cap Cities and subsequently became an ABC O&O, much like WPVI.
WPXI I believe has been a Cox owned station since changing their calls from WIIC in 1981.
WTNH 8 Action News CT
yeah this was used on wtnh in the 80s
WSB-TV Atlanta's then NBC now ABC affilate.
The theme song should be retired as the official Jim Gardner song since it appears as if it has been associated with him the longest.
Philly went bats in 1995 when WPVI-TV altered the theme. The rearranged theme lasted just 5 days. It would probably kill the ratings.
Jim Gardner actually started in Buffalo at WKBW and they were using the theme then. He was noon anchor.
The KTRK rendition sounds rather flat and uninspiring compared to the others. Almost like it's a third or fourth generation copy.
I called WNEP’s talkback thing from Philly hoping that they eventually get rid of it. It’s annoying af and it’s been associated with Jim Gardner the longest. Basically in other words it gotta go.
They have been using it for 40 years. Why would they get rid of it?
Lol, Philidelphia would go absolutely bonkers if they do. I live in California and i enjoy it. Maybe because you dont like 70s tunes in general lol
WPVI-TV still uses it. Gardner retired on December 21, 2022.
It has to go why?
Like who are you…: 😐
