I took a two year school to receive my A&P license to work on airplanes. I had a hydraulics class within the program. But, where did you learn about hydraulic and electronic systems? In the Navy? Your skills are out of this world. Your heart to help people is not a any skill learned. You have a heart to help people is given to you by God. It’s a gift that God put in your DNA! I learned some book learning in the Navy, but mostly self taught. The Navy would send you to all these schools and once you were out to sea and something broke they wouldn't let you touch it, and you red tagged it until return to port so the ship yard could fix it. Another reason I decided to not make a career out of the Navy.

Life is a series of curveballs, I had to make some changes, and started my professional life opening a motorcycle shop. 40 years later, there you go. If my hands are not dirty, I had a bad day. It's in the blood, man.
Decades ago I worked as a Saw mill engineer and working on worn out gear was part of the job .I worked on log processors like that and one time the owners of the mill bought out another mill which was full of really crap gear, skidders, tractors, all terain forks, BM loaders, a couple of Cat bulldozers ,even a cement truck. On top of that we had to rebuild the actual saw machinery. . We spent 2 years rebuilding and modifying everything to get it all running. The bosses said the same to me,"we need to get this thing running" So I did. I was young then too ,25.
There are people out there that have no business owning machinery or operating it and you have run into one of these fools. Kudos on straightening out the mess. One of your best videos.
Thanks Warren for sharing the faults and errors on this tree processing machine. I hope there are folks still around understand on your method of diagnosing what it wrong and come up with a plan to rectify the errors, then test the repairs. This step-wise approach can be used on almost any situation, does not have to be mechanicing, it could be anything perceived to not be working or communicating... Take care out there Warren working by yourself in those remote areas, let someone know where you are at and how long you expect to be and call to check in once in a while, things change as we get older...and sneak up on us.
It's a good thing that you’re around Warren to fix it right the first time. Most mechanics don’t give a shit anymore, that’s why no one trusts mechanics anymore.
Hi Warren, great video as always. I have found that a packet of different coloured cable ties can help in keeping track of hose routing and orientation. The tails stick out so you can see them from a distance while tracing the hose. When the job is done I cut the tails off and then next time I just have to colour match the hose at either end of the machine. Crazy to me that they didn't run a rotary coupling for the track gear and cab level. If a wheeled excavator can have unlimited rotation then surely a feller buncher can too.
I have a safety vest that I slip on when needed: hydraulics, electrics, odd-bold sizes, etc.. In the vest acrylic paint tubes. No brush. I have tubes of Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, White, and Black. One example: When disconnecting a wire from a multiple terminal, I put a dot of one color on the wire, and one dot on or above the post. (there is always room). I go to what the book says is the other end and repeat the process with the same color. If I suspect wrong or bad wire, I use a continuity test. The nice thing about acrylics is one dot covers another if I have to reposition or replace those wires or their location. Easy/Peasy. I have found more and more places where this technique works. No brush, straight from the little tube. Buy day glow collars.

One of the hardest things to do is to try and figure out a butcher job. Your head will explode trying to figure out what someone else was trying to do. Great Job Warren.
Didn't check to see how old video is but having had my hands on these clunkers hydro ax skidders mulchers basically forrestery junk I know the pain but I will admit I love the woods best office besides the truck a man could ask for. All of them do the same like u I look at it that a pump is a pump a wire is a wire and an engine is an engine don't matter its not working and if it doesn't work neither does the man that operates it. Having hands on different manufacturers every day is a chore from time to time but that keeps it interesting like your videos it different all the time thank you
You are a determined mechanical / electrical genius (mad man). You take on a task that 99% of us would say, "Not fixable". You need an apprentice to spill some of that "can do" and "know-how to" and "where to start" skill set. Maybe 3 apprentices. You have logic, talent, skills, and confidence. Unstoppable. I would look at that piece of equipment and say, "Well it's done". Watching your videos, I"d now say, "Better call Warren". You could rebuild that thing from top to bottom. Do you think the manufacturer could spare an extra few inches to allow people to actually fix or maintain their equipment? Just seeing cut wires and all those hydraulic lines going to boxes you could barely access makes my head hurt. A big salute to you. My God - just another example of how God has gifted certain men to do certain things very well. And You? You do a lot of things very well! Its a wonder the "Factory" doesn't hire you to come look at their next equipment model and say, "Hey Warren - how can we make this better?". How many years of skills are shown in this video? 30?

30 years ago, Warren, I had a sign in my shop. It showed the labor rates: if you watch, if you help, and most importantly, "if you did it first." I understand. When those trunk lines got flopped all over Hell and back, it was the makings of a future disaster.

What a nightmare.Luckily those boys have you there to figure this thing out. I bought a couple scrap balers that were half ass rigged like that machine.It took myself and another guy a week to get everything back to the way it should be.
Warren when you have to work away from your manuals, take a picture of the pertinent page and you can reference it on your phone where you are working. It's helped me out a bunch over the years.

I watched this and still can't understand why that kid working for you didn't appreciate how much he could learn from you. Prentice spent time with logging contractors to get design and problems retified. Most were fitted out new to customer requirements. Very complex equipment and need operators with good mechanical skills maintenance ethics. This machine was abused and trashed by a series of previous owners. The current owners are in over their head. Lucky Warren is putting her back to stock factory setup.

Years ago I did four years of pipeline tracing, both manufacturing and services. I can tell you that the commonest fault is the installer/manufacturer getting flow and return swapped over ! These are people with drawings and a good idea of what a system is supposed to do (part of the job was getting record drawings up to date, and right ) For a secondary installer I can only suggest doing one pipe at a time, do not disconnect a number of pipes at once without making a drawing beforehand, because as you change your orientation to the work you will get turned around in your head ! I have had endless arguments with experienced installers, and they are always convinced they could not be wrong,and hate you to pieces if you prove them wrong ! I am going on too long but I can assure you that you can be wrong !! Me too ! but I always checked over again and again before I said anything. Oh yes, and bloody good luck to you on this one Warren !
Yes it's funny how our brains work when at times your speaking and the word you want to say comes out as a different word. Same as doing a task that you preformed many times before but then do it as backwards. When this has lethal consequences is when you call your wife by a different women's name.😄😄😄
It's hard when the hoses are all bundled together and to get to one you have to take several other off! It's good to label stuff! Personally I would have cancelled the check or sued them if they did that to me! My dad had a good saying, "A good lesson to learn!" Never buy something sight unseen, especially when it's too good to be true!!

These hoses can be very confusing - you just have to stay focused on one at a time and that's not easy and reaching the connection is a nightmare with a wrench
You have it right, us regular auto mechanics don't have to deal with all that amount of debris and oil all over the place. And we usually clean it up to work with in that kind of saturation of Oil and Debris!! I'm sure it's just not possible to do that with everything you work on!! 👍👍
Ah rats! Well, you got a great cliff hanger there brother.. It is amazing to watch you figure all this out... these are the kind of video's I love because I love to figure things like this out.. In my youth I could take the manual and love to give it a try.. Though it would not be as fast as you did it by a long shot and there would be no guarantee of success.. My Dad, who was an aircraft mechanic, told me, if you want to know where a wire goes in a plane, put your left hand on the wire, then your right hand ahead of your left, then repeat. Works well for hydraulic lines as well. In the military there was no shortage of diagrams, but they could not be trusted. Apparently the same for feller bunchers. Keep up the good work.

These are people with drawings and a good idea of what a system is supposed to do (part of the job was getting record drawings up to date, and right )
For a secondary installer I can only suggest doing one pipe at a time, do not disconnect a number of pipes at once without making a drawing beforehand, because as you change your orientation to the work you will get turned around in your head ! I have had endless arguments with experienced installers, and they are always convinced they could not be wrong,and hate you to pieces if you prove them wrong ! I am going on too long but I can assure you that you can be wrong !! Me too ! but I always checked over again and again before I said anything.

Yes it's funny how our brains work when at times your speaking and the word you want to say comes out as a different word. Same as doing a task that you preformed many times before but then do it as backwards.
When this has lethal consequences is when you call your wife by a different women's name.😄😄😄
It's hard when the hoses are all bundled together and to get to one you have to take several other off! It's good to label stuff!
Personally I would have cancelled the check or sued them if they did that to me! My dad had a good saying, "A good lesson to learn!" Never buy something sight unseen, especially when it's too good to be true!!

These hoses can be very confusing - you just have to stay focused on one at a time and that's not easy and reaching the connection is a nightmare with a wrench

You have it right, us regular auto mechanics don't have to deal with all that amount of debris and oil all over the place. And we usually clean it up to work with in that kind of saturation of Oil and Debris!! I'm sure it's just not possible to do that with everything you work on!! 👍👍

Ah rats! Well, you got a great cliff hanger there brother.. It is amazing to watch you figure all this out... these are the kind of video's I love because I love to figure things like this out.. In my youth I could take the manual and love to give it a try.. Though it would not be as fast as you did it by a long shot and there would be no guarantee of success.. Cars and machinery where what I did most.. never any heavy equipment. Thank Warren

My Dad, who was an aircraft mechanic, told me, if you want to know where a wire goes in a plane, put your left hand on the wire, then your right hand ahead of your left, then repeat. Works well for hydraulic lines as well. In the military there was no shortage of diagrams, but they could not be trusted. Apparently the same for feller bunchers. Keep up the good work.
What a cluster. It maddens me that some folks can fubar things so badly. It takes a real mechanic to figure all this out and get it sort it out.
