This is probably my favourite video ever. Throughout my life, natural forces and their mathematical motions have fascinated me. The waves in water, the way leaves bounce and catch wind, how feathers ruffle when a bird tries to come to a stop, the undulations and cracks in huge rock faces, the vortices a canoe paddle creates... theres too much to name. I wondered how one would talk about such broad and vague concepts with art. Although Iris's clothing was always beautiful to me, the new perspective, context, and value you've added to her dresses has taken my breath away. How something could be so calculated and yet so free at the same time is crazy. The child deep inside me smiles a bright grin. Thanks Bliss, great to have you back!
Excellent explanations of how these dresses are constructed. You are the first and only fashion - media person who actually understands how to apply the philosophical idea of deconstruction to the clothing and probably to other arts as well. Nice.

wow man i really missed your analysis and i love the fact that Iris Van Herpen is taking fashion to a new level and experimenting with different shapes and styles.
Bit of a time jump commenting on this in 2021, but I absolutely adore designers whose concepts are beyond human imagination and expectation. A wee bit more mundane but I do think the Asian designers Angel Chen and Minju Kim embody that as well, was made aware of them in Next In Fashion and followed their work since! In the show they used the concept of a group of Korean divers for ready to wear (I think they used neoprene?) and in general they'd often mix Western with Asian aesthetics which really just blows my mind. In any case, as a worshipper of IVH I really loved this video!!! Her collections historically just transcend each and every season (with the skydiving dress being a pristine gem imo.) Always nice to watch your vids, Bliss!

The skill, the vision and the execution is incredible It is beyond words, and you presented it beautifully. Ires Van Herpen is amazing. WOW She is definitely not the same, but I am kind of reminded of three as four in a way.
Not that it needs a label, but it does help when searching for a style that might incorporate some of the same feeling. . . But what would this style be considered? I've heard Posthumanism, but that is more Marilyn Mansion or Salvia. Iris Van Herpen seems more like ElfTech? Nouveau Metal? AlienNouveau? I'd love to have the vocabulary to be able to connect with other like minded people and creators.
I would struggle to classify Iris’ work just because there are no other designers that do anything close to her. Salvia is cool af, but it’s all CG. Iris makes real clothes that look like they’re from 200 years into the future 💫💫

The day Van Herpen will figure out how to brake all that down into a successful Prêt-à-Porter collection, I'll call her a designer. Until then ........ red carpet costumes. She cannot go on forever using NASA money. One day she must make money from selling clothes. TO PEOPLE, NOT MUSEUMS ONLY.
