  • Purely by chance, I got myself a Yale Doorman Electronic Smart Door Lock. They make it look so easy in the instructional videos,, and I have cut this down to 40 minutes,, but this was a all day projekt for me.
I have had it working a few days before you see this video, and it is pretty cool.

My PlayHouse is a channel where i will show, what i am working on. I have this house, it is 168 Square Meters / 1808.3ft² and it is full, of half-finished projects.
I love working with heating, insulation, Servers, computers, Datacenter, green power, alternative energy, solar, wind and more. It all costs, but I'm trying to get the most out of my money, and my time.

Locks only exist to keep honest people out. If a criminal is determined to break a lock to steal your stuff. Believe me they will find a way.
A good lock only prevents crimes of opportunity. Criminals prefer softer targets. So they’ll give a pass on harder locks that’s more difficult to defeat.

In case of battery failure and you are locked in in your house with no spares: Climb out off the window, go to the shops, get a 9V and four 1.5 V AA-batteries, follow instructions.
I wonder how well this lock will stand up to 220 Volts taken from an outdoor power socket, 12V taken from a car battery or high voltage from a taser-like device to soften up the house for intrusion. Close lightning strikes and extreme cold might cause isues as well, I guess. All in all I think it's wise you installed that joke on the backdoor only. ;o)

@@MyPlayHouse It is most likely insecure, plus there may be privacy issues. Many of these things have hard-coded passwords, randomly open ports via uPnP on your router, or are attackable via other means like Bluetooth. They sometimes even form a botnet. It's like always: A lock making company is great at making locks, that's their expertise. Now they put "smart IT" into it, which isn't their expertise, and therefore they tend to overlook potential issues. Can be powered from outside. Hmm. Don't think it is a good idea to expose any connection to the electronics. Maybe it can be killed (rendering unusable), even if one can't break in. I hope at least that the connector does not feed any power out, otherwise it is open to power analysis attacks too. Would be interesting to connect a scope and check. Also would be interesting to power from the port while analysing the power draw. Maybe even if the battery inside isn't dead, it will draw some current at some voltage.

Jokes aside, maybe on your particular case it is not important, because you are not a target and don't need that level of security, but someone might be, and it is a property of a lock how secure it can be.

This was a good how to video. It was laughable in a sense because you are installing a great lock on a cheap plywood door.I could put my foot through that door with minimum kicking. Think about what you are doing. Modern Burglars dont pick locks. They kick down doors. Build a strong door and frame in the first place. I live in the LA area and the evening news is full of street level hoodlums breaking in, not with lockpicking skills, but simply kicking the door down.
