Cool tip, but I have seen ceramic used before. I don't suppose you get them over your way, but here in the U.K. we used to get milk in glass bottles. The bottom of the bottle was really thick glass, made excellent arrowheads and worked as a stone for your steel. Some glass works, some doesn't, I would advise safety goggles until I know exactly how the material is going to react when struck.
That's pretty cool man. Quarts is the only thing we have here that's available in nature for the most part that throws a decent spark. I might have to take a run to the dump and smash a toilet now! Thanks for sharing
I have found qaurtz to work, but most of the course is very gritty and just trunes to like sugar. Need the hard almost clear stuff, this can be an alternative. Hope that your enjoying life over there buddy.
There you go, you got some homework, lol. I have knapped tiles tho have not tried to get a spark. I assume it would work, possibly, depending on the tile, tho not positive.
You can also sharpen a blade with it. That is how I sharpen deep bellied blades, is on the bottom ring of a ceramic plate. You can sharpen any blade on it, but super deep bellied blades such a s a khukri, or blades such as a karambit, can be difficult, especially if you have a tremor or are an amateur. A ceramic plate flipped upside down is a game changer in this regard.

A good discovery. There should be a source of quartz up there. Quartz will throw a good spark . I usually find it in riverbeds and just wandering around the mountains where I live in california. I don't capitalize the state name it is no longer worth it.

Have you tried experimenting with ceramic floor tiles? What about things like dinner plates or coffee mugs?
