I always think of Ordinary World as a new one by Duran Duran. It’s 30 years old. It has one of the simplest guitar solos ever, all on one string, but it’s beautifully in character with the rest of the track.

One of the (many) things that intrigues me about this song is the stutter-step rhythm inserted within the steady 4/4 time signature at strategic points in the song. It's almost like a small catch in your throat that might occur when you're struggling to deal with a sad memory. There's so much carefully considered craft in the writing and arrangement of this song.

This is some genius song writing by Warren Cuccurullo. The whole song is actually in B major (the c#m at the start of the verse being the II) but it's full of borrowed chords, beautifully voiced extended chords and great guitar work in general.

Awesome vid Doug. I'm a huge metalhead but Duran Duran have always been a band I enjoy. When I cut my bass playing teeth in the mid eighties, I was influenced by Steve Harris, Cliff Burton and John Taylor. JT is an immense bass player. Fun fact. He played the same model of bass as Cliff Burton, although in a very different style! Thanks for bringing Duran Duran into the spotlight, a vastly underated band and still producing great music. Keep up the great work!

Everybody in the 80s reduced the band to a bunch of pretty boys playing bubblegum music. Well, I knew all along that these guys knew what they were doing. This is the real thing. Real talent. Real musicianship. Now, 40+ years later, they finally get the credit they deserve. I am only sad for all of you guys who missed the chance to follow their career, album by album, song by song, tout by tour. Yes, they had the look, but they also had their guitars and their keyboards... Fantastic music. Skin Trade, What Happens Tomorrow, Save A Prayer, Pressure Off, Ordinary World, ... I could go on and on and on and on...

In early 1995, my wife and I has Irish twins. I would be up at 4am feeding the babies, watching MTV. They played this song a lot. It resonated so much because my whole life changed (in a good way).
    Thx Doug.

Absolutely beautiful song, something Duran Duran are famous for. A wonderful band I’ve had the pleasure of seeing in concert twice. Great to hear the expansion of your reviews too, thank you! Would love to hear you review more Duran Duran songs, Hold Back The Rain & Proposition would be excellent choices. Also, if you haven’t heard them before, Ultravox would blow your mind👍

In my first year at music school, the year ahead of us were assigned to be musical directors for us newcomers and this super heavy metal player was assigned to our ensemble and he gave us this tune. Was a surprise coming from him, but very quickly learned why. Incredible songwriting.

Wow, Doug, I'm pretty much 20 years ahead of you, so now I know why you've not heard some of what I would call, the classics : ) I LOVE the progression used in this song and the choice of melody over it, hauntingly catchy.
