In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm reacting to music by Duran Duran for the first time on the channel. Their 1993 hit Ordinary World is not new to me, but I haven't heard it in many years. It was lovely to return to this poignant and beautiful song...and play along with it a bit. I hope you enjoy!

I always think of Ordinary World as a new one by Duran Duran. It’s 30 years old. It has one of the simplest guitar solos ever, all on one string, but it’s beautifully in character with the rest of the track.

This is some genius song writing by Warren Cuccurullo. The whole song is actually in B major (the c#m at the start of the verse being the II) but it's full of borrowed chords, beautifully voiced extended chords and great guitar work in general.

Warren wrote the song with all members of the band, he didn't do it on his own, DD is one of the great collabs, they all work together, of course Le Bon does all the lyrics.

One of the (many) things that intrigues me about this song is the stutter-step rhythm inserted within the steady 4/4 time signature at strategic points in the song. It's almost like a small catch in your throat that might occur when you're struggling to deal with a sad memory. There's so much carefully considered craft in the writing and arrangement of this song.

When I cut my bass playing teeth in the mid eighties, I was influenced by Steve Harris, Cliff Burton and John Taylor. JT is an immense bass player. Fun fact. The Wedding Album truly is outstanding. Well, save for the mercifully short Shotgun. Every other song is fantastic! I especially like the deeper cuts such as Breath After Breath, Shelter, To Whom It May Concern and Sin of the City. I got to hear Ordinary World before 99% of the US because I heard the debut of the song on BBC radio. Gotta love shortwave radio!
That said, there is one album that, in my view, beats The Wedding Album hands down! That's Meddazaland. A truly phenomenal concept album about the pitfalls of being a celebrity. Beware, because you will sink deeper and deeper into Medazzaland with each subsequent listen! I think this album shows Duran Duran at their most progressive stage. It is very different. I think that's why it was lost on some of the fans. Nevertheless, it truly is worth visiting/revisiting.

Everybody in the 80s reduced the band to a bunch of pretty boys playing bubblegum music. Well, I knew all along that these guys knew what they were doing. This is the real thing. Real talent. Real musicianship. Now, 40+ years later, they finally get the credit they deserve. I am only sad for all of you guys who missed the chance to follow their career, album by album, song by song, tout by tour. Yes, they had the look, but they also had their guitars and their keyboards... Fantastic music. Skin Trade, What Happens Tomorrow, Save A Prayer, Pressure Off, Ordinary World, ... A lot of Metal heads secretly love this band. Back in the day you'd get laughed at amongst your metal head friends. You're right. This song really tugs at you. Their trick is that all their music really tugs at you with series after series of well placed chords.

One year ago this week, I lost my ex-fiance and dear friend to suicide. I needed this today. Thanks Doug.

This beautiful song embraces the reality that a person can be broken by a tragic loss and still put one foot in front of the other as they walk the long road of healing... and they don't have to do it alone. Peace.

This and 'Come Undone' are probably the best of their work. The track "It's Me" on "Last Temptation of Alice Cooper" (1994) has a similar guitar sound.

In early 1995, my wife and I has Irish twins. I would be up at 4am feeding the babies, watching MTV. They played this song a lot. It resonated so much because my whole life changed (in a good way).
    Thx Doug.

Absolutely beautiful song, something Duran Duran are famous for. A wonderful band I’ve had the pleasure of seeing in concert twice. Great to hear the expansion of your reviews too, thank you! Would love to hear you review more Duran Duran songs, Hold Back The Rain & Proposition would be excellent choices. Also, if you haven’t heard them before, Ultravox would blow your mind👍

Thanx Doug for this great reaction to one of my fave Duran Duran tracks. It was indeed the restart for them in the 90's and as your analysis proves, they weren't just a cutsie pop band. They had substance and great writing in their tracks as well. You may want to check out "The Chauffeur", "Come Undone", "Drive By" (cover version), "Save A Prayer", "White Lines" (cover version), and the one that started it all: "Planet Earth".

You should hear 'Invisible' from Future Past, they have great substance, they are one of the very few musicians of their era always pushing boundaries, like Bowie, like Prince, I hear songs of theirs from 15, 10 years ago that sound like something on the radio now.
