Wading The Looking Glass River For Northern Pike And Smallmouth Bass / Michigan River Fishing

  • As is usual Im doing some Michigan River Fishing. In This video I am wading about a mile stretch of The Looking Glass River in Mid Michigan in search of Smallmouth Bass and Northern Pike. The river was lower than usual and it took a while to get the first bite and I thought I might get skunked at first but it ended up being a great trip. I caught 4 species lost 2 pike one of which I had on 3 times before it cut me off then finally landed one. I lost a few smallies and caught a half dozen or so. I grew up fishing this stretch of water on The Looking Glass River as a kid and know it well. It has changed a lot in the last 30 years but has remained largely the same. Log jams come and go, holes get silted in but the same spots are always good producers. I even used the same lure this day that I used 90% of the time as a pre teen and teen boy as few things seem to outproduce a gold blade panther martin spinner with the black body and yellow dots.
    Reel Michigan Anglers is a personal passion and my gift to fellow fisherman. In the future I hope to do more informational fishing videos and cover different types of fishing all across the great state of Michigan. My goal, time permitting is to fish as many different bodies of water for as many different fish species as I can get my hands on. I am a Lansing Michigan resident working towards transferring to MSU for Fisheries and wildlife. My goal is to expand operations and bring more educational and entertaining fishing videos to my subscribers. In the meantime you can count on me for the occasional video outlining the the techniques and areas I fish for Bass, Pike, Walleye, Steelhead, Salmon, Trout, Carp, Suckers, Catfish and Panfish ect. You can see additional videos and other fun fishing related info on my facebook page profile.php?... I Wouldn't be the fisherman I am today without other fisherman who taught me the things I know and I am a firm believer that the sport and conservation of fishing in Michigan is better when we share it with one another. Wether your trying to lean a new spot to fish, a new crank bait to try, advise on what fishing rod to use, what fishing line to use, what color spinner a coho likes, what color jig a steelhead prefers, how to rig live bait, match the hatch, understand fish migration, the effects of barometric pressure or any other aspect of fishing the best way to learn is from other fisherman. That combined with trial and error and pure time spent on the water is the key to improving your fishing game. The better you get the more fun it is and the more we share the fun with others the more future generations will benefit from it. My goal is to kickstart that process by giving you loads of tips for fisherman, easy fishing tips for beginners, Best lure recommendations, How to fishing videos, how to rig videos, and other cool fishing videos. I will take you on a visual tour of fishing destinations you may wish to try, show you how I rig my rods, show you what lures I use to catch fish, What fish I target during the various seasons and how I target them. Budget friendly fishing gear reviews are another thing I plan to continue to deliver.

      I started off by fishing with spinners, and then I caught a shiner on a spinner so I threw it in my water bottle, caught a couple more and then switched over to a hook & Minnow

      I have caught a few nice pike and a few decent bass in that stretch. I used to Take my kids to the playground there and fish every once in a while when they were younger.

    That's how my day went. Fished the neighborhood shithole pond with cut bluegill. I lost a dozen fish and landed a tiny 12" bass. There are a couple 7 to 10lb largemouth I've seen in there and I've been trying to catch one for a year. I hook one today and it spit my hook in about 30 seconds. Great video I would have loved to see a couple of those pike. Looked like nice ones.

      Joshua Vanderschaaf yea that’s how it goes sometimes lol. I’m guessing the one under the log jam was in the 35 inch range the other was probably 28-32 the one I landed I would guess was 26inches... I love fishing with live minnows when I can. I have never actually tried cut bait.

      I don't use cut bait much. Sometimes when I go after bigger cats. I usually want live bluegill or sunnies when I go for flatheads. I don't fish with live minnows very often. I actually just ordered a bubbler this morning and I'm going to rig up a bucket to hold minnows this weekend.
      It sucks when you have days like that when you lose a couple nice fish. But hey at least you caught some dinner.

      Joshua Vanderschaaf I have a bait pond in my back yard so I stock up at the bait shop once and a while and keep em handy. I do like to use sunfish as well. I wish we had flathead in Lansing I’ve only ever caught one but it was a brute close to 30lbs

      I'm also curious about how long you have had your channel? I'm seriously thinking about starting one of my own. My girlfriend and I catch a ton of fish every week. Not always what we are after but we catch alot. I'd love to show you some of the pics I have from this year. I have a couple 6lb walleye, 3 sheephead over 10lb, a couple 3lb smallies and I caught a 12.5lb steelhead this spring with many others as well. We killed the salmon last fall too. I think I could attract some viewers.

      Joshua Vanderschaaf I’ve had mine for 5 years. My walleye and steelhead videos get a lot more views than anything else besides gear reviews. I hope to be making money off the Channel by the end of 2020

    I appreciate how you're able to hook fish on what appears to be a panther martin spinner, I've never spent many hours with them and nothing...oh well trial and error like you said

    • @ReelMichiganAnglers
      @ReelMichiganAnglers  ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole thing. Big pike close to the mouth and up by the headwaters. Lots of bowfin and carp upstream and smallies all throughout the whole thing. Pm me for more info I used to live on the looking glass too and have 30 years experience fishing it.

    There's no such thing as a bad way to fish but wading a river is my favorite method. The Looking Glass appears to be a beautiful river. Does it have many access points for the angler?

    • @ReelMichiganAnglers
      @ReelMichiganAnglers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Michael Kolacz yes there are and I’ve never run into another fisherman on the looking glass river wile wading. I grew up fishing this stretch and hit it up once a year for nostalgia sake. Wading is my preferred method of fishing as well for many reasons but I feel super at home waist deep in water.

    Love your videos! I'm new to the area and I know most people don't like to give away their spots, but where is the best place to start here? Looking at parking and doing some wading. Thanks in advance!

    • @ReelMichiganAnglers

      CarGar Fishing which stretch do you fish? In the shallow areas I tend to use a Panther Martins spinner size 6 because they’re small and run shallow but heavy enough to cast far.

      Reel Michigan Anglers I used to go near the kayak launch but now I started going near the fire station and started catching them, but not any pike.

    • @ReelMichiganAnglers
      @ReelMichiganAnglers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CarGar Fishing I haven’t fished that stretch but I heard there are lots of big pike as you get close to the mouth of the river. I just kayak fish from Babcock’s Landing several miles down river and we only hooked one tiny bass the whole time and it was so weird he did it was really hard to fish. The water is really low right now also but if we get some rain in the fall the whole river becomes really good fishing.

    Don't be the next youtuber naming a bunch of rivers and adding pressure 🙄

    • @ReelMichiganAnglers
      @ReelMichiganAnglers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lauran Black a rarity for me on purpose. It’s Not a location that could be easily found. I only name high traffic areas as a general rule and avoid landmarks naming the body of water is pretty vague without landmarks or locations specifics. I fish this river from it’s head waters to where it meets the grand river. I agree with your logic though. Thanks for watching!

    • @lauranblack5036
      @lauranblack5036 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ReelMichiganAnglers not referring to this specific spot just the river in general. If people can tell where your at from the landscape they've already been there. Naming rivers or spots is what brings new people. I know its not gonna ruin the fishery but its already seen an increase in pressure over the years

    Try tightening your drag and walk up stream always that way the dirt you kick up won’t startle the fish

    • @ReelMichiganAnglers
      @ReelMichiganAnglers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do usually wade up stream but in this spot I’ve been waiting down stream for decades. Works every time usually catch way more fish than this too. I always use light drag when using braided line. People give me crap for how lite my drag is but I have lost far too many fish with braided line on a stiff rod with tight drag. If you’re fishing with braid there is no need for a tight drag at all you’ll get a great Hooksett just by snapping the rod. When fishing with mono I said it much tighter because the line stretch will prevent you from getting a good Hook set.
