I was at this concert. Fabulous concert, Van in great shape - and John Lee Hooker was there and sang a couple of songs. What an evening! Still like Van's version of "Summertime in England" with Pee Wee in Montreux 1975 even better.
The joy of making music and the joy of life. The realtion of Van and the great sax player is a perfect example. What a fun it must be to be one of them in these moments. For us, normal -non-gods, an experience we only can dream of.
So nice to see this clip w/o the big honk'in VM logo superimposed over everything, as is available in some videos of Beacon Theater 11/30/1989. It is a really great performance, the whole show. It would be lovely to have, available, one day, a (hopefully, logo-less), clip/entire show, at 720p or even 1080p. Last I looked, available for $ only as VHS or LP sized video disk. Thank you.
@@bobsteinzigThank you Yes I noticed that as well - Another really great performance. Van surrounds himself with such good players, or they (really) want to play with him - or both..
Yes - Dave Early - Truly a great great drummer - nothing got past him, and he was, there, for almost everything else, & 1/2.. He does have a brief Wikipedia article about his life and work. Fortunately, apparently, he was not in a fatal crash after this particular show. He lived 6 or seven years on, until, fatal, was a crash. What real joy, and participation, we see in his music making. When Van creeps up to using silence, as well as he always does, you could not find a better partner, in silence, than Dave Early..
Some of the best shows were when Georgie Fame was MD and keyboards playing. Having seen the VM Bands over the years he always was at his best when accompanied by say Fame , Pee Wee , Candy Dulfer etc . Not when he had that awful blues shouter Chris Farlowe though!
what a song !! what a version....
This song, exactly this version should play on my funeral!❤
Take you to a town called paradise
This is what they mean when they say Van is 'on'. He takes you/us to a very special place only he can go. Brilliant!
So much delight to see Van loving what he does so well! So glad I got to see this!
My Dad got this VHS when I was just starting Tenor Sax in Middle School band. This track blew my mind.
I got healed too.
Beautiful presentation! Congratulations for all the band and great singers!
👏👏👏👏🤩🤗❤️
How did I miss this?!? The best version of my ever favourite song!!! Thank you for posting!

Powerful
Georgie Fame keeps it all flowing
Ya
Our awesome Belfast unapologetic protestant artiste
The drummer got into his car after the show and was involved in a car crash. He didn't make it. God bless his soul.
I didn't realise it was after this gig. Are you sure? It's a great shame. He was a fine drummer.
I have now 'checked' and he died in a car accident in 1996 apparently (in Ireland).

That's sad his playing is perfect!
Don’t think that’s correct

What a treasure, I think people forget what a great Musician Van is. I'm not big fan of his repeated lyric it kind of cheesy.
Ragnarok.

I love Van , but this version is ridiculous like his hairdo.......
