  • This introduction to OpenBIM, Native IFC, and Open Source AEC was given as a keynote speech at the CAAD Futures conference in 2021. CAAD Futures is a biannual international conference on computational architecture founded in 1985.
This introduction to Native IFC covers all the basic concepts, code, libraries, and tools to get started building your own Open Source AEC tools.

This is by far the best demonstration of what ifc is capable of. Thank you very much for sharing

This video is underrated. Not many non-jargon IFC applications videos out there. Next should be a detailed dive into each pathway.

Brilliant presentation. I didn’t know all this was possible. Happy to commit to transitioning my practice over to an OpenBIM way of doing things. This was inspiring, well done.

Amazing presentation - you've definitely refined the pitch over the years!
I'm all for this being the way things are done in AEC, however I expect lowering the entry point will be the key to bring in the majority (non-coders, non-programmers, laymen et al). Having said that, it's great to see real projects being realised using open source software and formats already as well as some exciting collaborations such as that with Topologic emerging. I really appreciate you diving into the technical aspects in this presentation, especially the step/json formats as well as showing the possible depth of the task example.
Keep going, I'll intersect with this at some point. The way Autodesk is going it's likely to be sooner rather than later.

At some point -I believe- programming will be a mandatory course across AEC education. Even high-school. Space exploracion, Machine Learning and AI, they all require at least some basic notion of programming. We are living that transition so... let's begin!

Brilliant presentation. Native IFC is the dream. When I started with product models (aka BIM...) 20 yrs ago what you now show was the ideal... the open data base in the middle.

Hello, and thank you for that add-on, that I personnaly need for fun and better building... ^^
I just need two pieces of advice. From what I understand, you have to integrate elements 1 to 1.
I have a wall, with Warren trellis type posts every 60cm, straw between the posts, wood panels + exterior lime wash of a few millimeters and a 5 to 10cm interior raw earth coating (according to my desire) , part renovation with an existing silica brick wall.
    Bulk :
    - How to create Warren type posts? (I have some for the slab, walls and roof beams). Should I model this by hand then integrate it into an ifc ?
    - How to make straw bales to be able to count them and know how many to re-size? The same for wooden panels, for cuts and losing as little material.
    Thanks a lot !

wow, I saw your work (the room rendered in Radiance) on the Radiance forum a few years ago and it already caught my attention that time what kind of thing you've been able to do with Blender (as for example the 3d model from pictures, where you made the background in your model). then I somehow forgot it or had no time... and now TH-cam suggested me your video, such a coincidence ..or just the world is too small ?... nevertheless I'm now going through your videos etc. and see if I could somehow contribute into the openBIM world. As an MEP/Sustainability engineer I see the lack of the MEP software , so that would be something worth of improvement

The software is the BlenderBIM Add-on. There is a new drawing system in development which uses IfcOpenShell under the hood.

@@leandroschenone7253 It is a work in progress, but yes. In Blender, all-in-one you will be able to model, generate drawings, do cost planning, programme scheduling, structural analysis, facility management analysis, AR, environmental analysis, etc.
