the exact method does not work. i mean, the table is extracted but the row of "FIsher's test" is blank (all the cells are blank). Below the table, there is a message: "Cannot be computed because there is insufficient memory". what do i do in this case? do i run it with monte carlo method?

Hi. Thanks for this great effort. There are 3 values in spss output tables regarding crosstab procedure, first is Pearson chisquare value, second is likelihood ratio value, and third is Fisher's exact test value. Which value to choose and report? I noticed that Pearson chisquare value, and likelihood ratio value are always shown in any spss corsstab procedure regardless the number of rows and columns and regardless the violation or no violation of chisquare assumptions, while Fisher's exact test value is only shown when there is more than 2 by 2 table and there is a violation of chisquare assumptions?
can I use this test for polytomous variables?
Please I would like to inquire more about Fisher's exact test in SPSS. I performed it on a sample of 141 patients with diabetic foot to see if there is an association between smoking and amputation. SPSS output table showed a value of 1.791 on the left side adjacent to "Fisher's exact test" sentence, and in the same row the P value was 0.454, and below the output table, the following sentence "The standardized statistic is -1.042.". what is the difference between the values 1.791 and -1.042 and how are they calculated?
Please can i interpret the result of the Fisher’s Exact Test as Fisher-Freeman-Halton Test, for a 3*5 contingency table? I saw throught the internet that the result labeled as Fisher's Exact test in the output is in fact the Fisher-Freeman-Halton Test

Can this test be used for tables other than 2x2 e.g. 3x6? I have been looking around and I could not find any clear answer to this :/

The only problem with applying Fisher's exact test to tables larger than 2x2 is that the calculations become much more difficult to do. The 2x2 version is the only one which is even feasible by hand, and so I doubt that Fisher ever imagined the test in larger tables because the computations would have been beyond anything he would have envisaged.
Nevertheless, the test can be applied to any mxn table and some software including Stata and SPSS provide the facility. Even so, the calculation is often approximated using a Monte Carlo approach.
Yes, if the expected cell counts are small, it is better to use an exact test as the chi-squared test is no longer a good approximation in such cases.
Can Fishe'rs exact test be used if it is 2*4, 2*5 or 2*6?
