2011 MINI Countryman S Review - Yes you want to own it, but can you afford to?

  • It's new? Are you sure? But it doesn't look new. Then again, MINI hasn't really come up with an original design since the 'new' Cooper debuted in 2001. And even then one could argue it was just a modern interpretation of the classic shape...

    Yep, I have a countryman all AWD and I live in utah, it went up the hills in parkcity with snow better than most of heavy trucks. While trucks were stopped on the side of the road, my little mini went up like a champ.

    The countryman is the best car mini has built so far, I have owned 4 mini coopers over the years and they have all been great cars, but the countryman in my opinion is the best so far.The car feels and drives like a mini hatch but with more room and comfort, All the people who when asked would they drive a mini and answered no because its too small? well now you have got the perfect replacement. Mini is not about being small anymore its about being a brand, and thats fine by me, The best thing that ever happened was the new mini in motoring history. We still have the classic mini to thank for creating a new mini which was well overdue, Things have changed and moved on in the mini world and im so glad the new mini was created. What else can you buy that looks half as good as the mini???? NOTHING.

    I really like this car. I love the brand. I love it’s shape, size, stylish exterior and interior, but due to its unreliability I’m starting to have my doubts about buying this car as my first car. I hope Mini makes a reliable car with no issues in the next few years. I might still get this car as my first car just cause I love the brand that much. Every car breaks down and has its flaws at different time periods or certain mileages. A man has to live his life to the fullest to truly understand who he is and where he came from.

    • @RetroKingOG
      @RetroKingOG ปีที่แล้ว +2

      After 2015 BMW fixed most of all reliability issues. I own 2016 S countryman and bought used. Had it almost 2 years havent had a single issue.
      Don't believe all the rumours of them being unreliable, it's not all true. One of the reasons people or articles claim minis are unreliable because people tend to believe BMW when it comes to certain aspects. After owning one and asking BMW certain questions, (like about transmission fluid changes for example); BMW/Mini well tend to tell people it's unnecessary to have it changed. That's absolute BS, cause main issues with older generations tend to be transmission issues.
      Have transmission fluid changed around 100'000 km to be safe if intending to keep the car for long time, it will be pricey but it's absolutely necessary.
      Secondly, they told me same for brake replacements, (said that's also not recommended); once again it'd be on the buyer to have common sense to know when to change them.
      Luckily for me prior owner took really good care of this thing had them changed and saved me round 1'000$ for front brakes alone
      Benefit of owning any mini in general, is fuel economy. Countryman, mine averages 28 mpg city and up to 40 mpg highway. I went on 5 hour road trip few months back and averaged 42.4 mpg.
      Cant say that bout any crossover competitor.

    Nice car.Too bad the reliability and cost of parts are a contention against buying one ($2,600-$2,900 for clutch replacement? Ouch!) The Mini's have awesome leg room and look great but I get the feeling it will spend more time in the repair shop than in my garage and will be constantly be putting a strain on my wallet for repairs. Pity. You notice these car reviews never seem to bring up the negatives of the costs of owning the vehicle they are testing. I would think bringing up reliability according to previous models track records and consumer tracking would be a good feature to have to aid in making an informed decision and which vehicle to buy on any(all) car reviews.

    I’m on my fourth high pressure full pump in my 2011 Mini Cooper countryman S with 125K miles. Yes they have extended warranty on that part but that says something. I love everything about the car but reliability is terrible. Also I had to replace two dead spark plugs, the remote keyless entry receiver died, turbo went bad at 70K, my timing belt tensioner failed at 90K and both VANOS sensors went tits up.

  • @largol33t1
    @largol33t1 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well, they're not really a lot cheaper here. Are you talking about Australian dollars or US dollars? My Clubman cost almost $20,000 USD before I added ANY options. After trying REALLY hard to go easy on the options, the price had shot up to $26,000! That doesn't include any taxes. Accessories and options are freaking expensive partly because most are built by BMW, not MINI. I was so shocked by the cost of the options that I sadly had to forget about upgrading to sportier aluminum wheels.

  • @bondanoz
    @bondanoz 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I was talking in AUD, but the difference isn't that great... $47,000 AUD is about $45,000 USD... so a countryman S is still $17,000 USD more expensive in Australia... then as you said, options are on top of that.

  • @oreohey2568

      Im at 92'700 km still running i bought mine used in 2020 with 79'800km
      Ive driven two road trips, averaged 40 mpg or more on those. Travelled over 22 cm of snow last year with ease.
      I must warn you though, don't believe what Mini or BMW will tell you! GET transmission fluid changed around 100'000 km if you intend to keep the car.
      Bmw will tell you the fluid will last forever. Minis in past suffer from transmission problems, and i know few people who had to pay out over 10'000 to get them fixed.
      Get transmission fluid changed after 100k.
      Secondly i also asked mini how much brake pads would cost as quote, fronts are very pricey 860$ before tax. Thats canadian.
      And 560 for rears.
      Just be careful not to slam on brakes too much

    I decided to go with a Clubman because I needed storage space badly. It's the only model other than the Countryman that would work for families with one child. I just wish the stupid pollution laws weren't so harsh. I'd rather be driving a diesel. They get almost 51 mpg! Makes my Clubman almost look like a gas guzzler! But then, my last car averaged only 19 mpg so I'm happy with that...

    @wesamalhoob I own one and it is indeed comfortable. It's run flat tires and the tight suspension(found in S models) makes you feel mostly of the little bumps in the road. The clutch is also a little tight and heavy but it makes up for it in speed and gas mileage ;). It has amazing handling so you'll always have a smile on your face driving one!

    over 600,000 minis buit in Oxford, previous owners did nothing with the brand or the design just gave taxpayers money away and went bust. BMW have made an outstanding success of the product, OK so they had to evolve the design to be marketable and comply with modern regulatory imperatives which has left many aspects of the original concept missing.
    But this is a great car, The original Mini evolved into a style Icon and sport car and is what Mini was really about, BMW have captured that.

    Does anyone else find the new mini and new fiat 500 really ugly?? I mean it's "modern" and sleek, but then all the cars now tend to look the same.. And it really looks like designers didn't take one clean new design, but found a compromise between 10 different proposals.. The new VW beetle is probably the only good "revival" design I've seen. xD And not to say that the size is everything BUT "MINI". Original's moto was small, affordable, easy to fix and to find parts..

    I think you need a new cameraman who knows tricks other than messing with the focus. Seriously, it gets old in about 10 seconds.

    OK where shall I start 1) Its not a mini its BMW's awful Idea of what a Mini is 2) its Fugly beyond words 3) The Ergonomics and interior quality is bad but certainly better than most Dodge's Chrysler etc that come on sale in the UK the 300C is a case in point the original design and even the 90's incarnation is far superior to any of the new BMW mini's

    These cars are pieces of shit: After 60k km, ours already needed a new timing chain (and we serviced it religiously!). Electronics started failing in the 50ks (right after warranty expired). Run-flat tires are hard to find and expensive. If you buy one of these, plan on spending lots of money on a regular mechanic. :=P
