  • The Bullerswood carpet (measuring approximately 4 m wide by 7.5 m long) is one of the objects on display in the V&A’s British Galleries. The carpet was designed by William Morris (1834-1896) and woven by Morris & Co, Hammersmith, London, in about 1889. It has a cotton warp, jute weft, and woollen pile coloured with a range of natural dyes. The richly-coloured complex design consists of scrolling arabesques with stylised flowers and birds and a border with repeat motifs of leaves and flowers.

    I am always so impressed with the British conservationists and the extent with which they go to to clean and preserve.their acquisitions. That carpet is stunning. Thank you for this video.

    Thank you for this intimate look at Morris's last masterpiece. It is a fitting memorial to his artistic gifts and the personal aesthetic that inspired his designs.
    Respect and affection in equal messure for Morris as a man, an artist, a compassionate social reformer and inspiration to generations of admirers.

      I hope you will now learn about William Morris and other artists and craftsmen and women from the Arts and Crafts Movement, including the designer William Ronnie Macintosh and writer John Ruskin. There are others as well. It will be worth your time, for sure!

      Alphonse Mucha created the movement "Art Nouveau" in France. William Morris was one of the main actors in its British counterpart: the "Arts and Crafts" movement. In Spain, it was Antoni Gaudí the main head of "Modernismo" (Modernism) movement. In Germany, the "Jugendstil" (Youth Style) movement had many representatives, for example Otto Eckmann.

    I wish they displayed heavy carpets like this on the ground with a transparent cover so that viewers could walk over it to view it.

    This video is interesting for its extreme pomposity. You took down a rug and vacuumed it. Thank you, Victoria and Albert!

      Dave grow up and do some research on William Morris, educate yourself before making derogatory statements about something you don’t understand.

      Dave, indeed, such drama over a carpet, the very idea of dust congealing on the fringe, horrifying! ......really?

      @@scarletpimpernelagain9124 The world is full of sick and starving people, and huge amounts of money are being spent on preserving a rug. Dave has a valid point. How about you educate yourself on the plights of mankind before making derogatory statements about a random person on the internet.

    I love this, but I have to admit
    discussing from which way best to look at a carpet
    sounds increadibly dull out of context.

    But if the colors stayed the same, why change the exposed bit?

    • @stormspire
      @stormspire 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They checked the exposed areas on both sides and are reporting that so far the fading is even....

      The weight of the carpet on that roller pulls on the carpet fibers, even though they’ve minimized it as much as possible, so switching it up allows the other side to “rest,” so to speak.

  • @13Monkeyboy

    Why is not the whole carpet exposed? It schould not be to complicated to do so, by highering its hidden part at the top, by some technical grips, like round metal sticks pointing ll. upvards on the backside, and the carpet to ceep it in plase or put it on a 30% winkled stage and so on ..

    • @voraciousreader3341
      @voraciousreader3341 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Did you not hear that the carpet is so enormous that there was only one room that could contain it when it was completely unrolled?? Did you see how huge the carpet was on the roller, and it was only partly exposed?? Maybe you need to watch it again.
