ages have past, since these machines had been coveted, no longer seen as the wonderous piece of human ingenuity that they are. stained and replaced, rusted and worn, these machines wither in silence and suffering. yet even in the cold, uncaring world, unable to see the perfection in even the oldest of machines. there are the faithful, those that know the centuries of curiosity, and hard work, in each of these relics. these faithful few that rip away the cruel chains of rust, and remind these hardworking machines. that no matter how old they are, they will always be the glorious creations of mankind, deserving of respect and admiration. praise the wheel, praise progress

Average gasoline powered lorries existed back then including gasoline cars that replaced the torqueir, cheaper steam cars, and steam powered (although old at that time too),was an option, but it was a more sensible one as it was torqueir and more efficient(cheaper), and just like the sensible steam options for heavy vehicles, so it was preferred, later, we got to see diesels coming, after Rudolf's invention which were even torqueir, more efficient and much cleaner(though still dirtier than petrols since it's a more incomplete and unrefined combustion system, and release other fumes much polluting than CO²)than steam, so I mean to say just like how diesels replaced steams, electric A.C motors which is even more cleaner, efficient and torquey may replace diesels for heavy vehicles like public transport, and trucks. Though gasoline may still exists, and in cars, since not everyone can satisfy their needs just with public transports unless they live in cities and don't need to go anywhere particular, or some may just want a personal car, and electric is unreliable, not sensible and unnecessary tech for vehicles like cars, it's not eco friendly either cause Electric needed for each many individual cars is more harmful than the pollution caused by making petrol fuel, and for the diesels, even though efficient, may be replaced because it's polluting(though less polluting and sensible than EV's for cars), and the torque potential can be almost the same due to newer Direct injection tech on petrols(These tech may even increase efficiency in petrols, hence reducing the benefits of a diesel), while producing more power for lesser displacement. Thus, I mean that, although people may not agree or believe in what I think, if it's true, you would be correct that diesels would be fascinated one day as they would be replaced by EV tech.

According to the markings on the cab side, 9 tons 10 cwt (ie. 9.5 long tons) unladen. That's a lot of weight to move with a nominally 100hp boiler and engine, which is why it isn't very fast up hills.

I hope you did that firebox shot was done with a mirror and didn't put your camera under flaming diesel. Edit: rewatching it, you didn't use a mirror. :( Next time use a large mirror under there stood up at a 45 degree angle that shows the view you want and film through that from a safe distance. Cheaper to replace a mirror than a camera or burned off skin.

Fuel consumption is "lots of coal" and "lots of water" - it is not cheap to operate under modern economic conditions. The label on the side of the cab states a 20mph speed limit. I believe the nominal power rating is 100hp, based on railway locomotives that were made using the same boiler and engine.
@CurlyG65 2 cylinder double acting engine. pretty sure this isnt a genuine dg8 but one that has been made out of various waggons are genuine ones are rare as hens teeth! pretty sure no examples exist. still a nice waggon all the same though
It has two mechanical gears, operated by a lever in the cab - that is the signature feature of the DG series. I believe they can only be changed while at a stand, so you use them to prepare for a difficult hill, rather than starting in low and proceeding to high. It also has a cut-off lever for the steam engine itself, which is close to equivalent to "gears" for a locomotive. After the gearbox, there is a differential and a pair of chain drives to the wheels. The engine and gearbox are both mounted under the chassis. Incidentally, the double steering front axles are almost unique to the DG8 (the 8 referring to the total number of road wheels), as it was the first heavy road vehicle to feature them. Many of the other parts are standard Sentinel types that appeared on many wagons.

That is an interesting machine, some of the parts seem so modern, while it is steam powered.

What year was this truck manufactured? I read somewhere that the steam powered versions were phased out in the 1930's. The truck looks showroom new.

Do you put any oil in the cylinders to prevent corrosion during winter storage ?
The cylinders are lubricated by oil suspended in the steam we manually operate the pump to put more oil in the steam for a few minutes
