15:26 Remember, luck runs out was a song that was about Eurylochus ody's 2nd in command questioning him so to the crew if his 2nd in command is starting to question him why shouldn't they
In luck runs out, i have a headcanon that because Ody had Athena's support most his life, he doesn't really recognize that gods couldn't care less about mortal lives and that they are in fact not friends. Whereas Eury and the crew have been taught more closely to respect and fear the gods. Gods are normalized to Ody
I don't get why so many people seem genuinely pissed about this. Like, his whole channel's style is listening to a few songs from a work or artist. He rarely breaks this trend. I get wanting HIM to have the best experience reacting to it, but I don't think that mindset breeds this much ire.
@@sunnythekitkat2651Personally, I think its because EPIC: the Musical is something you can't enjoy fully without knowing everything prior. For example, the callbacks to prior songs, the reason why a certain character does something, even just realizing the gravity of a situation. You can't feel the full sadness of the Underworld Saga's callbacks unless you know just how close to home he was, the stupid mistakes he's made, or even just the context of who Polites is.
@@sunnythekitkat2651I mean, it's definitely an overreaction, but considering how many Epic songs end in a middle of a transition to the next song it can be kinda frustrating to listen to them on their own. Nobody likes cliffhangers that never get payback.
@@sunnythekitkat2651 I think the problem is, that usually musical songs can be standalone experiences, but musicals like Hamilton and Epic are using their songs to tell all the story and it not just 'time stops so this character can sing their inner thougths'. So when you just randomly listen to a few songs without order it's like opening a book and reading a few pages in random chapters. Sure you can tell if it's well written, but it won't make sense if you don't read it in order. Epic also makes much much more sense listening in order and it's a bit annoying to see someone asking so many questions and not getting what's happening and why only just because has not listened the full story in orders. Sure it's their choice, but it's an odd choice and irritating to see. Like when you Mom asking while watching the movie "Who is that? Why he said that" and you are like "Just watch the movie, it will probably will explained!".
@@sunnythekitkat2651Seeing as epic the musical, is a story told through all the songs, and the fact that he kept questioning what was going on or who someone was. It's like opening a book to random pages and saying the story confuses you.

@@Giveuponyourdreamsanddie2 I think he doesn’t cause he chose to listen to all the songs out of order at first... That's why he could have missed a lot of details. And also he's distracted by watching the awesome animations instead of listening to the songs carefully, which is sad.
He revealed his name where he lives and his status so with this Poseidon isn't just calling him a cowered but also stupid as even if he loses Odysseus in the storm (which i think he does but i could be wrong) he still knows where he lives and can stop him from returning to his loved ones
First, in "Luck Runs Out" Eurylochus was doing his job by warning Odysseus when he disagreed. The problem is that by doing so in front of everyone else he was undermining Odysseus' authority and making the other men question Odysseus. That is dangerous. What he should have done was find a way to warn him in private. In "Ruthlessness" my reading was that Poseidon WAS being ruthless - but he was being ruthless differently. He was tormenting Odysseus so that when people hear about how much shit Poseidon did to him other people might be more wary of pissing Poseidon off.
19:32 Yes, while all of the crew decided to kill the sheep and they all attacked Polyphemus (the cyclops), the blame would fall on Ody because he’s their king and their captain, meaning he takes responsibility for their actions, like in Thunderbringer when Zeus blamed Ody for the crew’s action to kill the cows even after Ody told them NOT to kill the cows.
9:27 I think, in this animatic, the hair tie Odysseus is wearing was Polites's bandanna/headband that Polites had in most, if not all, of the animatics he's in and the fandom just decided it was his thing. In most of the animatics, they showed Odysseus picking it up when Polites... well, got pancaked. And now, him wearing it has been kind of like a symbol of him remembering his fallen comrades and taking them with him in his journey. It also sort of symbolises him taking Polites's mindset of "greeting the world with open arms" which was how Odysseus acted in this saga and in most of Act 1. Him losing this bandanna in some animatics in one certain future song also signals him letting go of that mindset. So I think what Eurylochus (the second in command) did when he touched Odysseus's hair tie here was remind him while singing "What would we do bif it tears us apart?" was remind Ody how he lost Polites and how it should never happen again so they must not do anything rash. 10:40 The thing is, as much as he does deserve that criticism, we shouldn't forget that he is still the king of Ithaca so criticising and undermining him in front of the crew was not only undermining the captain, but literally their country's king. 20:16 Poseidon was literally like "You should've killed him, then, we wouldn't have any of this" because it is true. Had Odysseus killed him, he wouldn't have been able to pray to Poseidon to get his revenge. Or at least, if Ody didn't reveal his name, Polyphemus wouldn't have known who to get his revenge against, hence, being unable to pray to Poseidon who he wants revenge upon.
we didn't spoil you who opened the bag, YOU DID it's revealed later in thunder saga, hence you recognizing melody from mutiny in luck runs out (which originally was reversed ofc) and that specific plotpoint but anyways getting to see you so worked up is quite fun so i would love to see continuation! and please don't skip any more songs, just find other animatics like this time - they all are so great, and you'll get to refresh your memory before the newer sagas
3:19 pretty sure you have to prepare the takelage and maybe even take down the sail - its a sailing vessel and a big object catching wind maybe a bad idea if that wind is volatile. Also bring stuff below deck to not loose it, tie stuff down... get below deck yourselves or tie yourselves to something... even nowadays decks are dangerous in storms. One harsh wave or extra strong wind and you have man over board.
9:14 "A Dude that died" was one of Odysseus' childhood friends 10:33 "I took 600 men to war and not one of them died THERE" Nobody died During the war. I think you should re-watch the Thunder Saga when you get back to it so everything connects. I read the 10th book in a series, and after I finished the 9th I assumed I could skip to the 11th because "I would remember what happened what happened in the 10th." Spoiler alert I did not remember the events of the 10th book. 16:30 Humans can go 11 days without sleeping, but will suffer the effects of sleep deprivation throughout. 17:34 Cyclops and Laystragonians are different creatures, but I thought the same at first, too. 18:35 People have probably said this a lot already, but the gods can summon their own background vocals, while humans need other humans for background. 20:35 If Odysseus had killed Polyphemus, Posidon wouldn't be on a revenge trip
Moral is super important when your on a ship with a crew for months (if not years), I’m not saying that Eurylochus shouldn’t question his captain’s decisions, but not IN FRONT OF the entire crew! A ship needs stability to sail, the crew needs to know they can trust their captain or else you’ll have a mutiny on your hands
Dying in battle is glory to the ancient greeks, leaving the cyclops alive and disabled made him a disgrace, and therefore a direct fuck you to posiedon, who cares very mucb for hus children. And back then, an apology was the reasoning for doing something. Posiedon would not take the apology either way.
20:44 what he is basically saying is that "hey if you had killed him without telling him your name, then he wouldn't have told me anything and yall would be alive" Basically telling him that if he was ruthless, then he would save himself and his crew
As a former soldier myself, yes it is nice to have a difference in opinions and concerns, but to constantly question you commanding officer especially in front of the other soldiers is only going to make soldier morale go down to dangerous levels when in dangerous scenarios, all soldier know to not loose faith in your battle brother or thing are gonna get worst. The Zeus event happens because of his crew constant disobeying his orders Odysseus: "Hey don't kill the cow" what does the crew do kill the cow.
9:28 "Whoa, got a little intimate there" I mean yes, it was cute, but, the animator intended something else lol. Ody is wearing Polites' headband and Eury was referring to it, in other words, referring to Polites.
i highly recommend relistening to the thunder and wisdom saga on your own time just to catch all the references. like how the melody of luck runs out is duplicated in mutiny in the thunder saga.
I believe Poseidon wanted the trojans to win the war so he already disliked him, and that odysseus didn't do any of the rites greeks would do to honor poseidon when they entered the sea to ask for his favor for entering his waters
So the reason it would have been merciful to kill the cyclops is because all monsters are reborn in tatarus. By leaving him alive he's permanently blind and in pain instead of being reborn new :)
@@RespectUndead44 ok, but isn't tartarus a place of torture? wouldn't it be better to live blind than be dead and endure some kind of elaborate tartarus punishment?
Actually Eurylochus opening the bag should not be considered a spoiler considering he already listened to Scylla in the Underworld Saga where Eurylochus literally tells Ody that he opened the bag.
Yes but no about Poseidon hating Odysseus, He originally just Disliked him Because He was Rooting for the trojans in the war but they lost, but then Odysseus gave him a reason to thrash him and vent his anger by blinding his son.
They actually are in greek times, any further regrets or sorry would be further insult by saying he had made a mistake by blinding him. Blinding someone over a mistake is incredibly insulting as a lasp in judgement changed their life. An apology in ancient greek times was about justification for what you did and wishing you didnt have to or had done it differently. Socrates in the original plato apology even says the people who died benefited from his actions as death is a gain. Its giving reasons why not to be punished to get the person mad at you to be understanding of why you did what you did
Sheesh. "Where was "we should be kind" when he was talking about burning down an entire island and stealing their supplies." Mathew he was literally saying "We're going to do our best to do this peacefully and without fighting. But if THEY kill US you can kill THEM." Which I personally think is quite fair in the context of, y'know, ancient Greece
I think Poseidon was mad at Ody for not killing his son, both because he hurt him but also because he didn’t finish the job, Ody claims he is a great king and won a war but isn’t willing to be ruthless. Not killing him then revealing his name was the stupidest thing he could have done, like he thinks there will be no consequences.
In Luck Runs Out and in Storm. I'd like to point out that Odysseus is captain. As a captain leading many people, he can't show worry or concern cause that would cause his crew to feel the same. Even if he isn't sure, he has to pretend that he is. When Eurylochus doubts him in front of the crew and Odysseus pulls him aside, he tells him not to undermine him in front of the crew as it would cause the crew to feel as though the captain and first mate aren't on good terms causing worry, he didn't tell him to be quiet and keep his opinion to himself, just to express his concerns about Odysseus' decisions in private.
Man I would have watch his reactions if he rewatched the whole saga from the start and not skip songs despite listening to them before cause context changes EVERYTHING. At least for vengeance and Ithaca those would be in order 😭
17:26 Welp, after this vid, now I can't help but imagine Aeolus, after taking in that air, just farting it out the other end 😂 I feel like it'd be somewhat in character
The one thing almost ALL of the Ruthlessness anamatics got wrong is the lack of the Laestrygonians (the giants) Which Jorge confirmed are the voices saying “POSEIDON, POSEIDON” and are what destroy the ships (not Poseidon)
Odysseus decitions wheren't even that bad... Following birds to shore is regular prcedure when lost on sea. With the Lotus eaters, he mostly truted his best friend, who gathered the information from the Lotus Eaters. The damage in the cave was alredy done before odysseus could do aything to stop it, and his plan to fight the Cyclops and the follow up on how to escape him was great. In storm Odysseus ship is alredy the leading ship, becouse it's the captains ship. So instead of faning out a bit, let the other ships DIRECTLY follow his ship, which is alredy kind of carving a track trough the waves. Ancoring the ships on the only solid thing not affected by the storm, a giant flosting island, is a better idea than keeping sailing through it. And asking a god for help after having lost you patron god, while risky, isn't stupid when you are faced with something of possible devine nature, like the storm! The only truly bad decitions he made so far, was telling the ciclops his name, not somehow locking the wind bag away (becouse Eurylichus is not to be truted after effectively starting to turn the crew against his captain), and potentially not directly apologizing to the ciclops. (Oh, and not teaching his man how to fish or shoot freaking birds. A lot of trouble could have been spared, if those dimwits had just figured out how to catch SOMETHING while at sea -.- )
15:41 the point of them not trusting him was because eurylychous had just “planted seeds of doubt” in their minds so they had already started losing trust in him or at least that’s what I get from it
9:28 That's bc his hair tie is a reference to Polites, who commonly wears a headband/bandana in animations (he's the one with glasses that got WRECKED)
If memory serves, not all cyclops are Poseidon’s, the first ones were the children of Gaia and Uranus kids that assisted in the fight with Titans and Uranus, and then helped fight the Titans with Zeus and co.
The entire "righteousness" thing in Ruthlessness in the point though. He's not saying Odysseus revealing his name was cowardly - it was cocky and overconfident. Poseidon is saying that if he truly wants to make it home, he has to commit to his decisions. When he asks him to apologize, Odysseus doesn't, even though it might seem like it. He is still making excuses why he hurt the cyclops, saying he "had to do it" and "took no pleasure in it". NOT standing by his decisions but justifying them. He wants to be forgiven. As you mentioned earlier in the video, Odysseus is convinced he's doing the right thing, partially because he HAS to believe that. Because if this is not all justified in the goal of getting home to his wife and child, what does that make him? He killed an infant.. He sacrificed men in order to keep the rest and himself safe. He is TERRIFIED of himself and the choices he makes, they haunt him, but he forces himself to see them as "righteous" in the greater sense of things. He wants to be forgiven on account of it all being for good. Over time he becomes less hesitant to make "hard choices" because he has convinced themselves they're justified. This disconnect from the consequences of his actions is what causes conflict with both his enemies and allies as they doubt his intentions
Okay, ya kinda need to chill about the criticism of Odysseus. Like, his actions make genuine sense if you try to look at thing from his perspective. Trusting the Lotus Eaters made sense because his men were desperate and literally starving. Also, he specifically went for the peaceful option there, rather than just invading like Euryloches wanted to. He has no way of knowing the cave was inhabited and even if it was suspicious, people were starving, and things looking suspicious isn't a good reason to let people continue starving. And they were going to die in the storm unless they were able to find a way out, which launching up to the floating island did. Odysseus isn't stupid. He is constantly being backed into a corner and taking the only options available to him. Euryloches criticizes him but doesn't offer any real solutions, only Odysseus does. Edit: I feel the need to point this out too; Odysseus was in the right to tell Euryloches to stop. Euryloches was not offering another perspective or another idea that they could compromise on. All he was doing was attacking and undermining Odysseus IN FRONT OF EVERYONE. Remember, Odysseus isn't just his captain, he is his KING. If this was any other king and Euryloches tried to call him out, he could probably be executed for it. And Euryloches is directly responsible for offsetting their journey and sending them flying back.
I love how Mathew criticizes songs, but at the same time if you focus on all the holes, or all the things that could have been done better, you suddenly don't have a story.
I'll repeat the way Moritus taught Casper the left & right hand mens' names. Polites is the polite one; he was the gentle sunshine one, the good/angel one, the *cough* pancake *cough* one. Polites' name looks like the word polite. Then you have Eurylochus, the one that makes it til the end of Thunder Bringer that you referenced so not really spoiler. Eurylochus is the mean/devil one, to remember his name just think "You Really Cussed" to get close to Eurylochus. EVER since Mortius said it I can't forget. Great job on listening to them all in order. I was happy you were listening to Epic any way you wanted, however I was also wishing you did them in order since several of the questions you had would had been answered with the context of their order. ALSO, fun fact from Jay, part of why Eurylochus opens the bag was in a cut song between 'Luck Runs Out' and 'Keep Your Friends Close', where Posiden is whispering in Eurylochus' ears, without Eurylochus knowing it is a god.
Funnily enough, there ARE people out there who think sparing your enemy after a fight IS a cowardly thing to do. Somewhere out there, there are folks who genuinely believe mercy is a sign of weakness.
The "You reveal your name, then you let him live" isn't exactly Poseidon calling Odysseus a coward. Rather, it's him pointing out WHY they're in this situation. If Ody had done one of two things, not reveal his name/title or killed the cyclops, Poseidon wouldn't have been after him... Athena pretty much told him the same things

You should thank us for making you listen to them in order.

12:40 "okay, I grew up" now why do I not believe that at all
19:32 Yes, while all of the crew decided to kill the sheep and they all attacked Polyphemus (the cyclops), the blame would fall on Ody because he’s their king and their captain, meaning he takes responsibility for their actions, like in Thunderbringer when Zeus blamed Ody for the crew’s action to kill the cows even after Ody told them NOT to kill the cows.
6:38
Mathew: “It’s like he’s on a speed run-“
Me: “To get home, yeah”
Mathew: “-to piss off the most gods possible.”
Me: “…You ain’t lyin’”
The thing is, they woulda died SO much quicker without Odys wit
Do not skip the songs in the Circe Saga, even if you’ve heard them, cause you only listened to snippets, not the full songs.
My sister just calls it "Gaslighting Oddyseus the Musical"
Not wrong 😂
we didn't spoil you who opened the bag, YOU DID
it's revealed later in thunder saga, hence you recognizing melody from mutiny in luck runs out (which originally was reversed ofc) and that specific plotpoint
but anyways getting to see you so worked up is quite fun so i would love to see continuation!
and please don't skip any more songs, just find other animatics like this time - they all are so great, and you'll get to refresh your memory before the newer sagas
Yippee!! More Epic! Fitting since the Vengeance Saga just came out a few days ago
I mean.. he HAS to be lucky, he argued with Athena and wasn't cursed.
9:14 "A Dude that died" was one of Odysseus' childhood friends
10:33 "I took 600 men to war and not one of them died THERE" Nobody died During the war.
A ship needs stability to sail, the crew needs to know they can trust their captain or else you’ll have a mutiny on your hands
that "I LOST THE GAME" screen was evil. I respect it

And back then, an apology was the reasoning for doing something. Posiedon would not take the apology either way.
Except Ody lied in his explanation of what happened.
20:44 what he is basically saying is that "hey if you had killed him without telling him your name, then he wouldn't have told me anything and yall would be alive" Basically telling him that if he was ruthless, then he would save himself and his crew

i highly recommend relistening to the thunder and wisdom saga on your own time just to catch all the references. like how the melody of luck runs out is duplicated in mutiny in the thunder saga.

I like how matthew’s already listened to the thunder saga but forgot that thats when eurylochus admitted to opening the bag
About the apology
Ody never once said sorry or I apologize he just tried to justify his actions
A justification and an apology are not the same
They actually are in greek times, any further regrets or sorry would be further insult by saying he had made a mistake by blinding him. Its giving reasons why not to be punished to get the person mad at you to be understanding of why you did what you did
Exactly
Odysseus gave a JUSTIFICATION not an APOLOGY
Im SO glad you're listening to them in order, especially with the new release of the vengeance saga😭
Oh thank you for reslistening to all the songs in order. It was very fun to watch!
YIPPPEEEEE!!!

6:35 sounds like Wukong lol

14:11 Not enough people are talking about this. I think it really adds a lot to the video.
I dont think we mind if you rewind and relisten cause the song answered your questions as you talked.
YEAH NEAL ILLUSTRATORS
If memory serves, not all cyclops are Poseidon’s, the first ones were the children of Gaia and Uranus kids that assisted in the fight with Titans and Uranus, and then helped fight the Titans with Zeus and co.
In greek myth it is Ouranos, in roman mythology it is Uranus. Hope that helps!
@ Thank you!!
8:46 gee its almost like we listened to it out of order! (No hate thou i love these reactions 😆)
23:04 Mathew: “you’re a god so what’s he gonna do?”
Ody in 600 strike: 🤫🔪
I love this format of doing new animatics for the ones you've already heard! It works really well ❤️🔥
I love how Mathew criticizes songs, but at the same time if you focus on all the holes, or all the things that could have been done better, you suddenly don't have a story.
18:49 BEST. CUTOFF. EVER.
