Lincoln log! I made reference to them recently in the lunch room, but none of the half dozen people in hearing range had any idea what I was talking about.
I like the fact that you were experimenting and it didn't come out perfect the first time - it gives me "permission" to attempt one and not have too high expectations but still be happy with whatever result!
Very nice looking result! I have a couple of dozen slabs of English Walnut that I need to start using, and something loke this looks like a good skill-refresher for me.
I'm sure you already have one or two, but I would love to see a video on the old wooden planes used to do the basics of furniture building, like dados for drawer bottoms and other basic grooves and shoulder type cuts needed in cabinetmaking
Great project, simple and easy to make but lots of options for making it your own. The brass is a nice accent, definitely going to try that on a project. Thanks for the video and the imaginative touches!!
I saw a TH-cam where a guy customizing a truck said, "If you can't weld perfectly, you better be a good grinder." It occurred to me that in woodworking, if you can't saw perfectly, you better be good at filing/ chiseling/ sanding/planing/etc.
I actually did a live video on that a while ago showing it under microscope. Without sanding, it just absorbs into the top fibers. But depends on the type of wood. And an oak. It might go down a hundredth of an inch or less. With the sanding. It might go down 200s of an inch or less.
With rasps there is not much to them. Hand stiched feels a bit better, but they will all cut. I usually suggest starting with a fore in hand and working from there. They are sold individually so sets are not really a thing.
Where do you get your brass rod from? I have a project that I'd like to use it in but, there are lots of options available and I have zero exp with brass. This was a great project for someone to do with kids or non woodworkers to introduce them to the craft.
I buy brass brazing rods in the welding section at the big box stores. It's way cheaper than buying individual rods. They are smaller diameter, but that has never been an issue. It's one of those materials that you find more and more uses for it if you have it around. The brass can easily be cut and shaped with normal woodworking tools.
Chamfers are what separate us from the animals…. Love your sense of humor James!
Thank you as always,

The way those napkins blow over is too perfect.
He took 20 takes to achieve this perfection😊
Surprisingly it worked in about the third take.

Don’t be fooled that he did that in one take. I bet there was 50 attempts to get the napkins to blow over like that !!

Nice one, James! Loved thet intro, best special effects ever 😂!
Definitely going to make one of these, or maybe a few, as gifts!

Napkin press actually. I made one out of scrap oak. Mine had a flat oak place that sits in a slot in the back.
The tape trick as a depth stop is a great idea. I’ll file that away in my brain for future use.
don't file away at your brain, that may hurt!
Congrats on first.
Nice project. How about a keeper for the Lincoln log thingy?
Hahaha, love the intro, we have all been there!
Nice little project. Just an FYI, Walnut and Brass go amazingly well together!
Nice job. Details help us all learn something. Thanks for sharing all of your Quirks.
Love these small simple projects!

I like it, but I probably would have just dovetailed it. Faster and still a great look. Thanks again for yet another great video!
I was going to do it. But wanted to learn something new.
Love this project! It’s so simple, practical, and beautiful! Did you consider adding some brass to the center weight? Or some Celtic carving? 🤔
I was going to do some Celtic weaving on it. But ran out of time before the video had to go up.
N here an idea, keeping and old junk plane or old blade for flattening brass pins lol???
I've actually done that in the past. It works okay. But you've got to have a really steep angle on it. Otherwise the tip chips out.
Thank you very much
Beautiful, James! Really nicely done!!! 😃
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
And is like to see a test(if you ain't done one already 😂) how well and deep the sanding makes the oil wick!

@@WoodByWrightHowTo I must've missed that one
Do you ever leave your fingertip hanging over your square when you're cutting a knife wall? I did this once.
I did that once when I first started learning. Not a happy time.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo so true. Makes you a lot more careful.
Excellent and looks fantastic. Thank you for showing your work.
Nice
Didn't get a good look sup with the shirt, and am I correct they butternut is English walnut?
Sorry should have got a better shot of the shirt.
But no butternut is related to walnut but different.
Hey James, what's a quasi decent set of cheapish rasps, I'm planning on doing some 'shaped' projects and my files would take 3 days to cut the shapes?
With rasps there is not much to them. Hand stiched feels a bit better, but they will all cut. I usually suggest starting with a fore in hand and working from there. They are sold individually so sets are not really a thing.
@@WoodByWrightHowTo So the cheap 4 in 1's should be good :) Thanks James
Would have done long dovetails and left four corners for legs
I thought about doing dovetails at first. But thought let's try something different. Have a little bit of fun with it.
Hope you finally got the scran you deserve! LOL.
It's good to know that even the experts make mistakes. Reduces the stress when stuff just doesn't go as planned.
Everyone messes up. Even the best. Woodworkers make some really funky mistakes.

This stick I just purchased at the big box store. But most metal supply stores sell brass.

And do need to get a good DONE rasp, now I switch to a metal file
Heard it but had my doubts even more after seeing your wood. Seen butternuts when a kid n mom had English walnut not n don't think we the same
Where'd that belly come from, Jimbo? I thought you were a marathon runner.
I do ultramarathons not just marathons. That's where you run through the woods. Looking for places to eat.
when its perfect its no fun ..
Nice to see something not perfect.
That's how you roll on this channel. Lots of weird mistakes.
