- Ahoy Fisho's! This week I head out fishing Deep with mates Shauno and Ashton, dropping down baits for some tasty rewards! Our plan was to use both electric and manual reels to fish between 250m and 300m deep out from the Gold Coast. Although upon arrive it seems like the current was running hard making the fishing very difficult. We were going to have to earn our fillets this trip!!

Gotta love the deep drop vids
First time i saw one of those was about 80 k off shore of NWA when i was commercial wetlining about twenty years ago. It was at 3am, about 8 inches long and swimming on the surface. It looked like a long tailed gold fish. I was pretty stoned and when i got the other decky to look it was gone. For a long time i though id imagined it. Then we started catching them amongs the Rubys.
Good on you young man for hand cranking that deep water. I picked up a couple Daiwa Tanacom electrics for doing the deep drop. Limited by regulations in California to two hooks and a maximum of 4lbs of weight. 61 yrs young so let the electric do all the repetitious heavy work

And because of you I named my rod holder “Rodney”. When I get a hook up trolling or drifting with a rod in the holder I call out “Rodney is hooked up!” My old boot camp buddy and fishing partner gets a kick out of it 🤙🏼

Jeez Shaun went a bit quiet there as the flamies were coming into the boat and all he was getting was ornates. Funny stuff. I spose you did have to give him a few. It is his boat afterall and you'd hate to risk being struck off the list lol. cheers Sammy.

Yeah just a 4 hook patternoster made on 3 way swivels. Shauno used a light, I didnt.
Hooks are generally 6/0-8/0’s circles and a gang hook on the top 👍

Three knots in 6,643 feet of water? That's insane. Even fishing 600 meters with heavy lines that you fellas are using must have been difficult to fish. I'd use .08PE with a three-meter shock leader of 40# fluorocarbon to cut the current and raise the fish from those conditions.
