The breeding season is coming to an end. Charlie, the male cardinal, is worn out from the heavy duty of feeding & guarding his family. Now he must build his energy back before the winter sets in. He has stopped feeding his offspring & now is fighting his mate Bessie over sunflower seeds. Bessie has now picked up the fledgling feeding. The pair are still hanging around each other but there is some friction. This is common among some birds. Cardinals do not migrate and they will spend the winter in a very cold/harsh Chicago, feeding becomes important as they start to bulk up for winter.
