Looking back at this whole interview, and how close Luann was to the deceased I am so touched she made this happen, when I was in this career I gave it my all and I can see her passion and Kari's as well and I love to see that. 💓

What a good and informative interview. Luann is certainly passionate and very giving about her services and career. Her presentation is very respectful and positive given the fact that many of us simply do not understand what needs to, and/or, can happen once we expire. Preparing the deceased is another form of art, imo. And wow, how she mastered this man’s final requests. Artist. An artist.

Excellent topic! This is definitely something that not everyone would want or enjoy, but the ones I've seen pictures of are absolutely amazing and I'm sure that for people, it was exactly what they wanted.

I’ve seen so many pics of this- it’s so cool to actually hear from the person who did it!! I was thinking “hmm well hypothetically how would I want to be posed” and then I realized my favorite thing is sleeping so I think the traditional way would be fine 😂😂 but put me in some nice pajamas!!! Haha!

I'm from Winnipeg but I don't think there is anyone here who does extreme embalming. It wouldn't work for me since I plan to be cremated.
Extraordinary! She has the skills of ancient Egyptian embalmers.

I'm fascinated. Embalming fluid is a fixative. With that said, I'm surprised the decedent could be manipulated & positioned in a sitting pose using a high index solution. I believe there will be a market for this skill & this practice may become more common with time for a select few. Good job!!
Talking today with some staff we thought about how if you move an arm and use a little weight you can have that arm in any position so it takes time and placement and positioners and the body will stay when you think about it

Kari, I have a question for you. If somebody wanted you to do an extreme embalming on them, would you do it? I do believe the 1st "extreme embalming" happened with the actor, John Barrymore in 1942. He was propped up, sitting with a drink in his hand. He wanted "One for the road." His friend,fellow actor, Errol Flynn was shocked and mortified to say the least.

That was done to his un embalmed body when his friends bribed someone at the funeral home. They drove away with it and sat it up as best they could in the living room of Errol Flynn, with whom the actor had been living the past several months.
@@davidson-mielellc980 Ok. I was mistaken about John Barrymore's being embalmed . It's still EXTREME. His friends went to EXTREMES to play a prank on Errol Flynn . You would have to agree on that. I haven't heard of any other story like that. So, I will say, it was still an EXTREME VIEWING that John Barrymore's was un embalmed and still propped up however "THEY" did it.

I noticed that one lady from New Orleans (sitting at the table) was featured, but I'm sorry that "Uncle" Lionel Baptiste was not. He died a few years ago, and was standing up at his visitation, as he requested. We also had a socialite here who made headlines across the world. She was seated on a garden bench, holding a glass of champagne, wearing a feather boa, and one of her fabulous hats! I was invited to the viewing and it was unforgettable, to say the least! Btw, Galatoire's catered it.

The first time I had ever seen anything on this topic was quite a few years ago on "My Name is Earl" TV series.
I am not sure of the season or episode number but John Waters played the part of an extreme embalmer. It was a delightfully interesting, funny, yet sad show.

@@KaritheMortician you need to find it! It was about giving a proper funeral to the guy that Joy kidnapped in the truck. The first funeral they had for went all wrong. Because of that Earl felt they needed to give him an appropriate funeral.
They also find out that the fellow wasn't a very lonely person but had friends on the internet from all over the World.
There is a very touching ending to it but a sad commentary on today's society too.

This lady is an artist! I have seen a dead person with their eyes open. Their eyes were cloudy like the walking dead zombies. How did she deal with that?

It was good that she bonded with the decedent before he died. This may seem a bit mystical, but it could have worked out so well because the decedent was in agreement with what was decided upon before death. I've embalmed cases that was smiling then we looked again and the case was frowning. It was weird and couldn't be explained. Maybe they didn't want to be embalmed?
Embalmer in Vancouver here. I can see how this would almost require a very unique/close relationship with the family - doing this based on a verbal "I trust you" strikes me as very risky from a don't-sue-me POV. Similarly, I can only assume she's got all the requisite family permissions to disclose the amount of detail about the person she has here. All that said, I don't think people should shy away from this sort of thing but absolutely go in with the family knowing what they're looking for then confirming, and reconfirming exactly what they want.

I can't even begin to comprehend as to why people make such a huge fuss when a person conks. I have lost loved ones and yes I can understand how sad it is. However instead of spending all this money on lead coffins, expensive funerals, embalming and all the shit, why not just use a cheap wood coffin and bury or cremate the body? Why can't families use that money to help some charity where sick kids can benefit? I mean just look at the fuss the Royal family and the UK made when the Queen kicked the bucket? What a load of rubbish. Why couldn't the Royals use that money they spent on the Queen to help the poor Brits who sleep in those underground stations?

Hi Kari, I'm curious about the exposure to toxic chemicals while working in a funeral home. Are there any studies that show any statistics ? Thank you
There are not any broad studies. There is one new study out that only checked 15 selected funeral homes and doesn't provide a real like insight

My question is,how do you get them in a casket after the calling hours? Aren’t they a bit stiff? A 3 day process?!? Wow! 😮 Did he want to or request to be displayed this way? I don’t think Her Majesty was embalmed. I’m sure she was dressed in one of her beautiful colourful dresses. Her jewelry was her wedding ring and simple pearl earrings

Im surprised they did not use a medium index fluid with intermittent drainage and a 5-10 PPP setting for injection, as to not have the body too firm 🤔

1. Be embalmed for viewing, then buried.
2. Embalmed for viewing, then cremated.
3. Cremated immediately without viewing.
4. Green burial.
5. Others.
6. Whatever family wishes/Don’t care.

I want to be displayed in a cab off of a Semi truck tractor with one hand on the steering wheel the other hand on the gear Shift a day cab no sleeper with both doors open so people can see me from both sides maybe have this thing mounted on a revolving turn table with those velvet common feeder line ropes surrounding the ensemble like they have in the bank lobby and all the truck sounds broadcasted in over speakers

I love this concept, but how do you undo the effects of rigor mortis? If you pose a body sitting up how can you go through a viewing and then make them lie flat in a casket? In scientific terms I can't envision that without an outside force that is applied??? Am I wrong?? Or do you inject more chemicals to make the body pliable???
Rigor mortis is not an issue with this at all or any other embalming situations.
Gravity is the answer.
Very interesting but as a retired nursing home nurse who has seen a lot of death and as a person who has suffered thru the death of family and friends I can not attend a visitation or funeral of a body posed like this. Why not display large pictures of the person while alive doing their favorite activity etc. Again interesting and what ever floats their boat. 😂

She let him sit for three days, literally sit. She answered it. He formed into place by sitting. His eyes were exposed you can see them. He was sitting after embalming. You do not refrigerate after embalming usually. A casket for burial yes. She answered that he was in the casket for the funeral and then to burial.

Kari,I was wondering why you said you wanted your person to be really hard?? I remember when my HollyBear died I was just rubbing rubbing rubbing her arm,right above her elbow, and her skin was so soft there,not all hard...
to me & my beliefs it was a sign from my Father in Heaven that Holly was Still alive!!! could it be the embalming process was wearing off..she passed on a Monday & her funeral was not until the following Saturday.
