15:10 This version of the Penguin is quite different from most of his counterparts. In most renditions Penguin was born Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot into a wealthy family with historic ties to Gotham City. Traditionally, the Cobblepots are a high-society family who, unlike in Batman Returns, never abandoned their son, though many within their circle rejected him. Returns highlighted Penguin in a more extreme light introducing his deformity's and the idea of him being abandoned at birth by his parents and then growing up underneath a zoo and being raised by Penguins and former entertainers or "freaks" according to some people. So in many ways Batman Return's was also a differant take on the character. In the shows adaptation, however he's Oswald "Oz" Cobb who grew up in a more working-class environment and is determined to make a name for himself. His surname was changed to "Cobb" instead of "Cobblepot," though there’s potential for a future reveal that his full last name is indeed Cobblepot. But his upbringing is far from the wealthy family we know from most renditions so they writers decided to change his name to something less fancy sounding. I can see Oswald developing closer to the Penguin of the comics, iconic top hat and all by the end of the series. It would be a good idea to watch The Batman (2022) since this show takes place about a week after the events of that film. It should provide valuable context regarding the Riddler, Carmine Falcone, and the flooding of parts of Gotham. This film also has it's own unique spins on certain elements, mostly based on Batman Earth One an imprint that ran outside of the Mainline DC universe showing a younger Batman who is just starting out. Highlighted more "grounded" takes on certain elements and re-worked characters around. I guess it's like comparing Spider-Man (2002) to The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) just two differant takes on the same world and characters with their own changes.
It would’ve helped a bit better if you watched The Batman, as it adds more context and you’ll understand the motivations for the characters. I’d even say you’re doing yourself a disservice
I’d say the beauty of the show is that you don’t need to watch the movie to get enthralled by the story. The Peguin is very replaceable character in the movie. But if you have watched the movie the experience is better but still very good without
There will never be a MCU show with this level of quality. This show puts the MCU to shame. My boy Matt Reeves is cooking. I can't wait for The Batman 2.
Everyone is saying you need to watch The Batman first and you're doing yourself a disservice. I watched The Batman and hardly remember any of it but it didn't matter because the show fills you in on everything you need to know. I mean it probably makes it slightly better but the show is so good on it's own.
Yeah, the show is amazing on its own, but The Batman is literally the first chapter of this saga, this show is the second chapter, its like watching El Camino without having watching Breaking Bad
Yes...the Batman movie will give you a full context for this show. I know some people are saying you dont need to watch that first, but not me.
