Ever since Sunil Gavaskar retired he has always had a good word for his colleagues. His and Kapil Dev's rivalry / politics / infighting whatever you called it when they were team mates was legendary and publicly known but look how he smartly says Kapil should have bowled the last over and then promptly defends Kapil's decision to give Chetan Sharma the last over in that match. A very smooth talker indeed.

Javed Miandad Is All Time Great
I remember that match. I was a kid then; saw the start of Indian innings. Gavaskar and Srikant gave a dream start. Both played really well, with Srikant (75) in attacking mode and Gavaskar (92) playing the anchor role. Sharjah wicket also was much slower than today's wickets, and scoring on it was a tough task. The fact that only Gavaskar, Srikant, Vengsarkar (50) and later Miandad were able to score well on that wicket proves the point. In the 49th over, Gavaskar was bowled by Imran. Tail enders of India could not score at all as wicket became very slow and Pakistani bowlers were able to reverse swing the ball, making stroke play difficult. This was said by Imran Khan himself. Once India was cruising peacefully at 216/1, but in the end, they could muster only 245/7. Had tail enders played well, then India was well on the course of 275+ runs, and would have easily won. Also, Miandad is considered hero of that match, but in the Indian innings, he had dropped a sitter, an extremely simple catch of Dileep Vengsarkar. During Gavaskar-Srikant (117), and later Gavaskar-Vengsarkar (99) partnerships, Pakistani players really seemed lost. It is true that Miandad (118*) single-handedly won the match for Pakistan. But later, Imran said that though Miandad played wonderfully, he has still not forgotten Gavaskar's inning. Gavaskar was well on course of making his maiden century. Had India won the match, and Miandad not scored a century, then Gavaskar would have surely become Man-of-the-Match. Nevertheless, this match can be considered a turning point in Pakistan cricket. It gave them confidence, and belief in themselves. Next year of this match, Imran's team defeated India in India: 5-1 in ODIs and 1-0 in Test matches; they won the Bangalore test match by 16 runs: the same match in which Gavaskar, yet again, played a dream inning of 96*, his last inning. An ode to the little master.

Cricket is the game plyed on the field and one does make mistakes. It's all about absorbing the pressure and Miandad did it far better than others.

I am a great fan of Kapil but I must say he miscalculated by giving the last over to Chetan Sharma, he should have been bowling the last over.

Bhai..wo last ball full toss b to thi. Being a cricketer, I understand the psychological condition of a batsman who's in a condition where Six is needed on 1 ball. Obviously he has no other option but to hit somehow n in such situation full toss on bat is like a piece of cake for a set batsman.
If ball has pitched somewhere else , I may take this exceptional..

Had he ( Chetan Sharma ) bowled a short pitched or a bouncer a yorker or whatsoever, the destiny of that ball was written outside the boundary line. I think Javed Miandad was fully prepared to face any type of bowling than just a Yorker.

It's not possible to k srikkanth a match fixing at that time, srikkanth played always natural game in onedayers and test matches. He played fast batting on opposite fast bowling.
