I remember this game well. I had spent the week in Atlanta working for company selling championship merchandise as a result of the Braves winning the World Series. I caught plane Sunday morning heading back to Cleveland, I get off at Hopkins airport and all I am hearing is Art Modell is in Baltimore to make an announcement Monday around noon.
Ironically, the 1995 season started out with a lot of positivity for the Browns and the City of Cleveland. The Indians were in the WS, the Rock and Roll HOF just opened, and the Browns were coming off of a great season. And in an instant, it turned 180.
Some sports mags and analysts had them as potential Super Bowl contenders that year. They had the #1 defense (and one of the best in NFL history to that point) in 94 and all they needed was some offensive playmakers to balance that out. Too bad the Jets drafted Kyle Brady, that was the beginning of the 95 disaster.
The Browns first game since the announcement that they were moving to Baltimore following the 1995 season. You can see in this game that the Browns minds were clearly mentally not in the game. It was a major distraction all week leading into this game. And as legendary Browns TE Ozzie Newesome said “It’s one thing to have a distraction. But when you have a distraction a week before a game, you have absolutely no chance to win” And that’s exactly what happened in this game. And ironically enough the Oilers themselves also were in a crisis about their relocation as well. But to their credit they were focused and prepared to play. The Oilers moved to Tennessee following the 1996 season.
