      mohamed hadjsaid Not really. The air around the ionized channel is heated up to 28,000 °C or above, and the electrical current dismissed can be as high as a couple billion volts. We don't have yet the technology to capture all this energy, unfortunately. An average lightning has enough energy to power up a 100-watt bulb for 3 months 24/24.

      Lightning only kills a few hundred people each year, which is like one word of the world population. This is an analogy comparison and let's put these into perspective. Let's say you're going to read the very long storybook, and you've read one word already. Comparing with the ratio, that's the only number of people who get electrocuted to death by direct lightning strikes.

    Why do lighter particles become positively charged and heavier particles negatively charged?

    • @9791mij
      @9791mij 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think that Positive charge are a more excited and become not simply lighter but is ready to move so in essence the negative is the opposite as they not ready to move so they take more effort to move

    • @jenniferd8560
      @jenniferd8560 8 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      Positive particles have lost electrons, while negatively charged particles have gained electrons. Even though electrons are almost mass-less, comparatively, the negative ions are heavier and so would migrate down.

      The speed of lightning is said to be at about 270 thousand miles per hour. For reference, lightspeed clocks in at 180 thousand miles per second (670 million mph) making it three times faster than a lightning strikes return stroke.

    falling rain and ice transfer a positive charge to even colder cloud particles. This creates a positive charge in the upper portion and a negative charge in the centre and a slightly positive charge in the lower regions. Since the ground has a positive charge, all the built up energy has to go somewhere and if it is built up enough it can jump across non conductive particles of air to positive ly charged areas within another cloud. How the cloud acquires this charge is not agreed upon. One theory is that rising moisture collides with other moisture falling such as ice. This collisions cause a charge separation. The knocked off elections gather at the lower end of the cloud whereas the moisture that has lost an election forms at the top of the cloud. Freezing plays an important role, as rising moisture encounters the frozen portion, frozen becomes negatively charge and the rising moisture positively charged. Where there is a charge separation in a cloud, there is also an electrical field that is associated with the separation. The built up electrical field becomes more and more intense that it actually repels the elections at the earths surface by the strong negative charge at the bottom of the cloud. This repulsion of electrons causes the earths surface to have a strong positive charge. The electric field cause surrounding air to become separated into positive ions and electrons, the air is ionized. Ionized air is also known as plasma and is much more conductive that the non-ionzed air. The ability or freedom of the electrons to move around is what makes any material a good conductor of electricity. If the lower surface of the cloud is not straight, the flux lines will not be uniform. Step ladder and streamer. When a leader and a streamer meet, the air around the strike becomes so hot that it actually explodes because the air expands so rapidly from the heat. This explosion is soon followed by thunder. Thunder is the shockwave radiating away from the strike path. The shockwave produced by thunder can damage structures and people. We see the flash before we see the thunder, because light travels faster than sound.

    • @andrei1151
      @andrei1151 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      well this is not entirely true according to this theory. So basically the negatives (electrons) in the cloud repel the negatives in the top layer of soil and then because it is just protons left in the topsoil the electrons in the clouds attract to the protons in the topsoil to make it neutral. Therefore the lightning you see is just electrons transferring from the negative cloud to the positive ground. But then again they are both just theories.

    This is why the Vikings prayed to the god Thor and hoped to make him happy so he didn't destroy their ships with thunder and lightning. Thursday was named after Thor (Thor's Day) to honour him in the hope he wouldn't get angry and create a storm. Likewise in German, they say Donnerstag (thunder day).

    This might be a silly question but it's something that I've wondered. Why does lightning strike sporadically? You'd think it would strike straight after one another but sometimes it strikes after several minutes of the first one. Does anyone know why?

    • @yourewrong4090
      @yourewrong4090 6 ปีที่แล้ว +37

      Michelle It is late, but during a thunderstorm air has to be ionized through a channel so that the electrical current can dismiss from the cloud. While this happens, everything during a thunderstorm are charged on the ground. While positive lightning does a electrical positive channel and strikes on the ground on a negative, negative lightning does create a negative channel and strikes on positive charged objects. The science beyond it is complicated, but while the charged particles travel down creating the channel, as it gets closer to the ground, sparkles start to rise and 'shoot' up towards the electrical current coming from the clouds. Lightning picks one up, the channel is created and the lightning occurs. All of this takes time, energy, conditions etc. While lightning does strike multiple, the phenomen is the same explained as above: lightning still has to create a channel, while it may do more at once, or it may dismiss multiple times and so on and so forth.

    This is what’s written in my physics book
    “Lightning is a natural phenomenon which occurs when large quantity electric charge builds up in the thunder clouds-The charge is produced by the friction between the air molecules and water molecules in the cloud-When the charge on the thunderclouds in sufficiently high, it induces opposite charge on the objects present on the ground giving rise to a strong electric field between the cloud and ground -Suddenly, the charge in cloud jumps to the ground with a violent spark and explosion.This is called lightning “🌩

    Thunderclouds at certain altitudes will collect certain types of charges. This is due to the influence of certain localized gravitational effect of the earth towards the air molecules as well as the water crystalline structure of the thunderclouds. In other words, certain localized gravitational effect of the earth will cause the unique nucleus structure of air molecules as well as water crystalline structure of the thunderclouds to flex in certain specific orientations and configurations that will either encourage them to retaining more stationary electrons or force them to letting go more stationary electrons. In addition, certain specific localized gravitational effect of the earth towards those stationary electrons of an atom to encourage them to stockpile more stationary photons. Therefore bottom of certain thunderclouds may collecting more stationary electrons while their top portions are having positively charges at certain specific altitude. Some other thunderclouds may have bottom portion that is collecting more positively charges while their top portions are collecting more stationary electrons at certain specific altitudes. We know this is true because during lightning strikes those stream of free electrons emitting out intense heat and light. Gusting winds help fast moving air molecules brushing against those air molecules that trapped within the thunderclouds to ionize them. Either force air molecules that stuck onto water crystalline structure of the thunderclouds to accept more stationary electrons or rob away some stationary electrons from those air molecules that stuck onto the water crystalline structure of the thunderclouds depending on the altitude of the thunderclouds. We now understand effect of localized gravitational effect of the earth towards those thunderclouds that eventually leading to lightning. We also realize that the earth's gravitational effect on the unique nucleus structure of air molecules that hovering in the sky in causing them to flex in certain manner that either encourage them to stockpile more stationary electrons or letting go more of their stationary electrons that will determine their ease of ionization. The water crystalline structure of the thunderclouds acts as a static capacitor in encouraging air molecules that stuck onto them to stockpile more stationary electrons or letting go more of their stationary electrons. But once the thundercloud precipitated, those air molecules can't hold up any excess stationary electrons because water crystalline structure has gone and such excess stationary electrons will be transformed to free electrons partly because those stationary electrons are also saturated with abundant stationary photons where they could transform to free electrons without any problems. When a stream of free electrons being discharged by the precipitated thunderclouds lightning ensues.We almost understand lightning completely except returning strokes in which we still researching on why and how returning strokes take place during lightning strike. If you are interested in real discoveries, I would recommend you to read my book, The Unification Theory - Volume One and you will be amazed with lots of new, interesting discoveries. In God I trust.
