  • The Trade Federation of Planets was established for the good of the galaxy, but somewhere along the line like harvey dent they were in operation long enough to become the villain. We take a look at what went wrong with this massive transport company.

This and the tech companies has too much power but history has way worse examples.
The east India company tried to take over India but they messed up so Britain had to tale India off their hand.
And yes they had an army and an navy, kind of like Amazon had an security force with pocket carrier, landing crafts and their escorts and multiple divisions including tanks and artillery.
Granted these was dangerous times with wars and pirates operating real warships, but being an continent thief is so much cooler :)

The Trade Federation is so interesting to me as a fan of history because there are no shortage of companies here on earth that can be compared to it. I am sometimes reminded of the Dutch East India Company, which was so big that it had its own private military and operated with near impunity for over a century before the Dutch finally dissolved and nationalized the company.
Interesting fact, adjusted for inflation, the Dutch East India Company was worth over 7.9 trillion dollars, bigger than companies like Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway, and Wells Fargo put together.

@@ANDREALEONE95 They were both very similar. The British East India Company was founded in 1600, the Dutch East India Company was founded in 1602. The Dutch mainly focused on the Indies, while the British focused on control of the Mediterranean (at first). They both engaged in almost every method of colonialism that existed at the time, including slavery and extortion of local governments.

Growing up with the prequels, everyone always complained about the politics. The politics are part of why I love the prequels, and it is very easy to see the parallels between the fading Republic/subsequent Empire and the current political climate in the U.S. but nobody seems to want to talk about that. That's why I love this channel, covering those details that many bemoan and complain about while explaining the potential significance to the galaxy as a whole in a way that any Star Wars fan will enjoy!

@@GenerationTech I just really enjoy the aspect that the real villains of star wars are setting up the plot and driving the story forward from the shadows. Their is something about playing 4 dimensional chess to achieve ultimate power which is both interesting and amusing at the same time. Because it just kind of funny that evil is staring at you and or the story protagonists with out even them knowing. But it even more enjoyable when you as audience already know about or start clue in drawing for your own conceptions and perspective.
Like Hey This Palpatine guy he seems to like too good of a guy and a politician actually keeping a lot of his promises and implementing them into law. He doesn't seem too have much of an opposition against the laws he trying to pass something ain't here. Then when he does reveal himself as Sith Lord and the Mastermind behind the Prequels Clone wars. Your like Yah I knew It he couldn't be trusted. While Palpatine is probably putting on sun classes having a major thug life moment in his Palace or sliding around in his socks to that one song "I like that old time rock and role it just sooths the sole." hehe XD.

The problem with the prequels was simple
we came to watch space wizards sword fight with laser blades. Not political debates with droid armies occasionally shooting at the protagonists.
Most people will get bored of politics real quick and not pay attention to anything less than Darth Maul. Combined with the poor writing with Anakin and Padme (See the sand memes)

Actually they were far from government neglected, they were government helped. A company that works without government involvement is just like any other business. Corporation is a legal term that gives a business immunity from government regulations that other business have to abide by. Corporations require government subsidies, bailouts, and overall assistance in order to obtain a monopoly by using the government to destroy smaller businesses. The Trade Federatiom was getting help from the Senate because innovation from smaller companies would have been able to compete if they had the same lack if regulation that the Trade Federation had.

But why did they blockade Naboo? Were they a major supplier or customer? What resource did they have that others wanted?

One thing that I find weird is the weird class dynamics in the separatist movement. A lot of the outer rim wanted to secede because they were poor and being unfairly treated by the wealthy and powerful core worlds, but the actual leaders of the confederacy were these massive corporations who had been doing much of the abusing.

I mean do you believe in corporate campaigns that target important social issues? They have an incentive to play up class warfare (even when real inequality exists) because it take attention off of their own actions

@@GenerationTech First, an honor to have my comment noticed, but yeah, I did think it made sense as a thing for corporations to do, just a weird dynamic. Whole war is weird though, because the whole thing was a publicity stunt and not a war both sides were trying to win.

Such an interesting take on this fictional organization - the TF. However, a clear parallel in today’s world when you need private investment to foster growth and profit. It also needs regulation from the gov’t that should have the longer term interest of the people and populations. A great proverb: Power Corrupts, absolute Power Corrupts - absolutely.

This makes me think of the bank bailouts during the 2007 subprime mortgage crisis. Bailing out the banks did save the economy but we need to look to see if we can change the system.

There needs to be more representation from the other corporations. We only ever hear about a few. Master and Apprentice was dealing with zerka Corporation. Not sure if that's still Canon

4:36 On one of the guy's faces, there is an anime character with pink and green hair with weird star-shaped? green pupil eyes. I think she's from Demon Slayer? She pops up 2 times in quick succession.

Becoming an adult is realising that 1) tax is theft and 2) the trade federation had legitimate grievances and Republic were akin to, say, the current Anglo-American empire we live under (ie the bad guys)
