Classic Sesame Street - The 30 Dots Collection (2013 edition)

  • MuppetWiki's "Dot Bridge" page: muppet.fandom.... (though my own research doesn't completely agree with the information on that page), and
    My updated (but still incomplete) collection as of November, 2017: • The 30 Dots Collection...
    0:00 • First perfect,
    0:14 • Second perfect,
    0:26 • Last dot is late,
    0:52 • Last dot is early,
    1:12 • Third dot tries red,
    2:18 • All dots go red,
    3:15 • Red dot gets a raspberry for being a brat,
    3:52 • INVASION Of The SQUARES,
    4:04 • Kicking the crumpled object,
    4:18 • An unwelcome square appears,
    5:11 • The wandering square,
    6:10 • A coughing dot leaves,
    7:14 * Is this what the final merger of the dots & squares looked like?
    I wish I could transfer all of the wonderful comments from the other "30 Dots Collection" upload over to this one. Earlier this year, I recompiled all the clips, worked on the audio of some of them, and included the "wandering square" clip which I didn't have for the first upload, especially now that YT took away the "video responses" feature. I tried to fix the shadowy stuff on the clips from Episode #1, so I hope I didn't make it worse.
    Thanks to MsPandaRosa and some of the other SS fans for sharing their insights and recollections regarding the obscure clips, especially the ones that have yet to resurface.
    If you'd like to follow the comment thread on the other upload, try this link:

    I loved these dot sequences. This collection is a great start. Please let us know when you find these: (1) The coughing dot is replaced by a small, disruptive dot. (2) The small dot gets it right and is kissed. (3) The dots appear tightly because the square's in the way; one turns red and is pounced on. (4) The dots and squares confront each other in the middle, then agree to appear at the same time, culminating in a Catherine wheel. (Are there any I'm missing?)

    • @MonsterpieceTheatre
      @MonsterpieceTheatre  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That probably rounds out the rest of them, according to MsPandaRosa's account. I don't remember ever seeing any of those, but that's possibly because they used to weird me out to the point that I'd look away, especially when they started doing the whole gibberish thing. But I'm waiting for those to finally surface as well.

      I remember one where a red dot would suddenly appear in the last position, accompanied by a buzzer, a few times prematurely during the normal sequence. The sequence would stop and get "debugged" until the red dot disappeared. It was similar to the third dot going red. That was the one I came here looking for.

      Is it possible that the Clark Gesner estate might have and be allowed to grant access to any or all surviving "Dot Bridge" clips? The only way Sesame Workshop will release these is within full classic shows, and barring any 50th anniversary surprises next year, that trend doesn't look too likely to continue right now.

      So, it looks like the one that culminates with the dots and squares forming the circular pattern has been finally revealed, but only to a few lucky folks for now. I’m not one of them, but hopefully it will trickle down to the rest of us soon. In fact, you guys may see it before I do. If so, please help a guy out.

    The lessons here are more subtle than the lessons in the typical _Sesame Street_ clip about one obvious topic: Patterns and conformity, expectations and surprise, social rules for dealing with troublemakers (both inside and outside the main group). Most children *would* see the dots as just shapes to begin with; when the dots (and later, the squares) start acing like people, the educational messages become clearer.

    Yes, when I found this updated collection, I thought it for sure would have the FINALE, where it looks like the one dot and the one square get married, at the end(and it always looked to me, like their "romance"was inspired by the way they happened to meet, in the middle)--I remember the squares started entering the scene simultaneously, with the dots. Thanks for this updated collection, though; again, I'm with MsPandaRosa, in hoping the big finale, will get posted, one of these days.

    • @MonsterpieceTheatre
      @MonsterpieceTheatre  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They used to give me the same reaction as a kid, for two reasons:
      A. I wasn't terribly fond of chromatic scales at that time.
      B. You didn't know what was going to happen next after the long, suspensive pauses, and the sudden rapid-fire sequences in the 5th and 7th parts hammered that uncertainty home. In addition, the dotless wall represented darkness to me, so when the dots would disappear, it would trigger a fear of the dark-like anxiety.
      And then, those faceless dots were given voices, which made them even creepier to me. But that's all in the past tense now.

      Not gigantic braille dots? (JK) Part of why these sequences were a bit scary to me as a kid was because the dots reminded me of light bulbss in a stairwell, and it perpetuated a fear of the dark when they would disappear after the 3rd dot went red. The suspenseful silence and darkness was unsettling, as well as the descending chromatic music.

    • @MonsterpieceTheatre
      @MonsterpieceTheatre  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not too much; the perfect one, late dot, early dot, and raspberry (all from 1969) were probably the ones that got more syndication into the mid 80s, and they were all probably retired by the early to mid 90s. The 1971 sequences hardly appeared at all in the 1980s and beyond.

    Hi! I would love to use the 30 Dots series to demonstrate some basic premises of Sociology to undergrads. Do you know where I can find this collection, but WITHOUT the titles? The titles give away the "rule" that one of the dots breaks. I can't use the titles if my plan is to make my students think through what they are observing, and think through how they know. (Also, the title is the punchline, and the point of the dots is that children, at a very early age, can recognize social "rules" and laugh when they realize they understand. The music gives enough clues. The titles remove the opportunity to learn, I think).

    • @MonsterpieceTheatre
      @MonsterpieceTheatre  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The first seven came from the show's premier episode, and the others appeared in later seasons. If you want, I can re-edit the video so that no title segues appear. Do you want me to send it via Dropbox or Google Drive, or upload it as a private video and send you the link? There are still others that I have yet to find.

    • @ttrowbridge6473

    I always wondered what the point of these were. I understand the letters, numbers, and naming things, but these dots don't make sense in an educational show to me.

    • @MonsterpieceTheatre
      @MonsterpieceTheatre  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you watch the 1969 Pitch Reel, Joan Ganz Cooney explained that Sesame Street was a very experimental show. The only time (I know of) that more than two of these appeared in one episode was in Episode 001. Throughout most of the 70's, you might've seen one or two of these in a given episode. Although they were mainly intended as short transitional films, some of the later ones dabble in the "basic reasoning skills" initiative, i.e., how to rearrange circles when there's a square occupying a corner of the screen.

      The first 7 clips aired since Episode 1 (Nov. 10, 1969) and throughout Season 1. I don't know if they aired during Season 2, but some of the "squares" ones began to surface during Season 3 (E.K.A. was Show 355).

      I like how sometimes there are variations in the orchestration, like deciding which instruments played the figure, and what octave the vibraphone was to play in order to get the most effective ring-out whenever dot-3 went red.
