  • 3rd time to Cholsey on the Great Western Main Line and also part of the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway
Featuring services from Great Western Railway and CrossCountry Trains plus a quadruple pair of 66s and a guest appearance of two Class 08 Locos operating that day on the Cholsey & Wallingford Railway.
This will be the last video for the present Intro being used before my updated intro will take over on the next spotting video.
When the GWML opened in 1840 to Steventon there was another station on the site of the junction of the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway that being Wallingford Road
It was renamed Moulsford on July 2nd 1866 before the branch line was opened by the Wallingford and Watlington Railway 5 days later.
The former Wallingford and Watlington Railway would eventually be absorbed into the original GWR 6 years later and unfortunately would never reach it's 2nd station of Watlington.
The former Moulsford station closed in February 1892 during the quadrupling of the GWML and at the same time when the opening of the present Cholsey station came into use
Although at the time of opening when it was known as Cholsey and Moulsford however it became Cholsey in 1950
At one time Cholsey was situated in Berkshire however the county boundaries were redrawn in 1974 which nowadays Cholsey is in the county of Oxfordshire
Although there are 5 platforms at Cholsey with 4 on the Great Western Main Line with Platforms 3 and 4 used nowadays served by Half Hourly Class 387 Electrostars to and from Didcot Parkway
Like Pangbourne the only access to all Platforms is via an Underpass however Platforms 1 and 2 on the Fast Lines nowadays sees very little use.
The Bay Platform which is Platform 5 is nowadays used by the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway.
The original line ran to Wallingford however closed to passengers in 1959 and then all together for freight in 1981 at the same time when the connection of the line to the GWML was removed
Also the Cholsey and Wallingford Railway Preservation Society was formed which in fact took over the running of the former Wallingford Branch Line
The closure only lasted 4 years until 1985 when a partial service was reinstated however it wasn't until 1997 when full service came back into use.
However the present Wallingford station is located 500 metres to the south of the former station on St Johns Road is situated next to the site of the former Maltings which goods traffic use to operate to however nowadays the sight of the former Maltings is occupied by a Housing area.
The station itself is only a makeshift station although there are plans to built a permanent station however largely depends on Resources being available.
A mixture of Steam and Diesel Locomotives haul visitors along the 2 and a half Mile including on the day of filming a pair of Class 08 Locos which were amongst 5 maintained on the railway with 08060 'Guinness' and 08123 ' George Mason' operating that day although at the time of filming some other Class 08s are undergoing restoration work.
