It has been so long since I watched this video I even laughed at myself saying that. I think we still have those pillows that haven't been washed since this video. Oh well it will be dark when they get in there. haha.

I am a pasta fed, Italian American, morning shower-girl... who grew up in Jackson Heights, Queens. Hubby and I both sleep on futons and they are wonderful. We keep hearing how much younger we look than our actual ages: (we are both actually over 70). I think healthy sleep is one of the reasons why this is so. We are well rested, and snuggly cozy all the time..
Minimalist to the max. That's how they save so much space from a little room. Neat :D

That bed looks so comfortable
It can be with an extra mattress but I usually get a sore neck if there is only one but everyone is different.
the third layer ('sheet used in winter') is used at least in finland all year around! we use it for protection; specially girls so sudden periods won't ruin the whole bed mattress. :)

Growing up in North America, I would have called that a fancy pallet.
I loved them as a kid and I sleep on a shikibuton as an adult.
I do not miss my old saggy queen mattress.

Hubby Ric and I have been sleeping on a futon like bed for 12 years now. It is so comfortable, snuggly, cozy, and I cannot even REMEMBER the last time I had back trouble...I recommend it. Bigtime.

That's so cool! We inherited our place from our great-grandparents in the USA & even the hand-made futons are still in pristine condition. My futon is the size of a queen but folded into thirds to fit on metal twin bed frame. The only thing that needs repair is the wood stove.
I just invested in a nice futon and tossed my old bed and mattress. Best thing iv ever done. My back problems are so much better now

When I was in college my family was horrified and concerned when they found out that I slept on a mattress -- no bed, just a mattress. I didn't see anything wrong with it, it was pretty much a futon. No moving a giant bed frame around with me when I moved. ;-)
European style mattresses can develop mold underneath if you don't flip them constantly.
I do this too but I don't know if people will look down on me if they find out. I live in America. I do this because its easier to move.
Any futon/ floor bed can develop mold under it if air is not allowed to occasionally circulate, no matter the country. That's why they air them out regularly. It's still better than the guy I knew who used cinder blocks as a box spring.

My colleague was horrified too. So she gifted me her still-new sofa bed that she didnt need anymore. But it was uncomfortable for me, that i gave the sofa bed away and went back to sleeping on Japanese futons.

As a Brit I tend to have a bath in the evening before bed to wash and to relax for sleep and in the summer I'll shower in the morning too if it's been a hot night. I think the culture generally is evening bathing as a must, as you get dirty in the day and not so much at night.

I'm a dumb yank, but I always shower before bed. The thought of climbing into bed all nasty and filthy from working all day, soaking your body and head grease into the sheets and pillows is just sickening. And I'll bet sleeping on the floor like this would do wonders for my back.

You're probably right about the back. I bet many people would have less back issues if they slept on a hard surface.

I found out about morning showers in like highschool and was shocked that most people do that in canada and america. Pretty disgusting going into bed dirty.
Stefan Cupovic As a Caribbean we were raised to shower before bed & in the morning. I’m sure this is what all people from hot, tropical countries do. Growing up in the U.K. where it’s cold & you hardly ever sweat, if I’m being lazy(most of the time) I shower only in the morning. I prefer to feel fresh in the morning where you will interact with people throughout the day. But according to granny, anything less than 2 showers a day is disgusting.
I feel too sleepy in the evening before I go to bed to be so busy to make my bed like this every evening, I think that I would just grab a blanket and sleep on the couch instead.
Haha me too but you don't have to make it up and pack it up everyday. You can just leave it out if you have the room. Some houses in Japan are very small so one room could be the lounge as well as the bedroom??!

so futons are essentially memory foam mattresses with a truckload of blankets stacked on it. comfy
I shower in the morning and in the evening. But I live in Canada so I'm probably spoiled we have lots of water.
Finally, someone who does both! I don't know how people can go to bed without showering. (Especially in summer.) But you do also sweat at night, so of course you should shower then as well.
@@Yesica1993 yes exactly, I am living in saudi arabia in Jeddah where its 45 C most of the year, :( and no winter , the humidity rise up till 71% so I shower 3 times a day . even the water is hot

Thanks. I'm in a Japanese style hotel room now and all I have in the closet is the bottom mat and the top thick sheets... Lying in between there seems like I might indeed get back pain as I have a weak back. Since I got both pieces of this puzzle twice, would it be a good idea to put 2 mats on top of each other? I sleep alone anyway
Yeah I always put two mats down if I am sleeping alone. Makes for a better sleep for me. Hope you are enjoying Japan
Always falling out of my bed maybe I should do something like this so at least I don’t have to keep getting up every five minutes at night although I probably have trouble getting off the floor like I do here
When staying in japan do you need to make your futon every night and fold it up every morning? Do you need to put it back in the cupboard?
It really depends on the place you are staying at. If you are staying overnight or a guest then it is best to fold it up every day (maybe they use that room for something else each day) but if it is your place then once a week or however many times you want to fold it up is ok. Roll it up in a corner or in a cupboard is fine. It depends on where you are staying at. You need to fold it up to make room to use but also it helps to keep the place clean.
Can someone list the names of all the layers to the futon i wanna get all of it but idk the names 😔
The traditional futon (布団) is made up of three parts, the mattress, shikibuton (敷き布団), the duvet, kakebuton (掛け布団), and the pillow, makura (枕). The mattress and duvet are made of cotton which is a good insulator and means that you’re kept cool in the summer and warm in the winter. The pillow is traditionally filled with beans
I just typed Futon Layers name into Google and got this which is on the gogonihon dot com page but I am sure you can find it in more detail on other pages.
I don't have a closet big enough to store all that bedding, just have to stick to a regular bed, then!
It would be awesome if you could link where Canadians could find these beautiful ‘bed linens’ for the futons.
If you are in Canada then I wouldn't know where you could get them sorry but if you are in Japan then any mall you went to would have a shop in it that would sell them.
I'm from South Africa. We wash up in the mornings but shower at night.

The folding one is called Mattress マットレス in Japanese. It is about 5-10cms thick.
Are there sheets for futons for persons who are allergic to bugs and dust?
No these are just your regualr futons.

Where I live we get ours from a place called Shimamura which sells clothes, toys and bedding. You might be able to get them from Nitori which also sells bedding.
I remember that we had a very thick blanket from Asia. Maybe it was like these, not the typical U.S. blankets. It was super thick and heavy and kind of furry. Made it very easy to sleep on the floor.

Each room has a huge cardboard to store all the bedding needed.
Japan Online so I was wanting to buy a Japanese style bed and I read about a shikifuton. Do you sleep on one of them or is that a more temporary thing and if so do u sleep on a shiki futon or under it?

Which layer do you sleep on/under?
You would sleep on the blanket/warm sheet at the 1.44 mark of the video and the blanket at the 2.33 mark will go on top of you.
Why are they so thin? Do they ever stack them? My understanding that a thicker futon will actually give you better/ firmer support than thin one?
Don't quote me but I think they are thin in this video because of storage space.

Haha yeah I know. We put on pillow cases since we made this video but still doesn't hide the fact that we know what they are like under them.

Japan Online No. I did look it up online, South Central. I'm in the U.S. But my trip to Japan is will hopefully be in 2017 and I'm wanting to tour much of Central and East Japan. Then I'll try to get to West if I can (yikes, I dunno if that can be done by rail -- lengthy ride, if yes).

Thats a lot of blankets on a bed,it must get cold there,and pillows?
It gets pretty cold in Shizuoka. Down to about 5-15 degrees. Northern Japan gets way colder though so I can't imagine how many blankets they use.

the third layer looks like a polyester velour/velvet blanket unless l am wrong. l am surprised they should sleep on petroleum made products, being so naturally oriented
Late to the party, but I never wait to shower in the morning. A days worth of sweat and grime for the bed? Not happening! A nice shower in the evening, general wash in the morning is standard, I really don't know anyone who sleeps dirty. (American, East Coast)
I'm Chinese-American and I was raised showering at night, although I do also know plenty of people who don't really care if they get a shower before bed. My husband basically showers only when I tell him to. It typically ends up being once every 3-4 days. He doesn't have BO and doesn't need deodorant (most Asians don't and those who do use it do so out of peer pressure). The only thing that really gets dirty about him is the hair.
Also, in the part of China where my family is from, showering regularly is a fairly recent development. My grandparents and parents didn't have access to heaters or hot taps growing up, and the average winter temperature there was around -3°F (-16°C), so on most days, all they did was wash their faces and feet and call it a day. Even after home showers became a thing, it took a long time for people to be able to shower without walls getting moldy and their downstairs neighbor complaining about water dripping into their space. Throughout the 1990's and 2000's, most people's showers were just a shower attachment with a drain in the bathroom floor.
How much does Futon cost?

Amazon has a bunch, but I suggest checking reviews thoroughly. A friend of mine got a mid-priced one only for it to start falling apart in a few months. Idk if that's a common thing for other Americans who've bought them on Amazon, but it's at least worth noting.

you really bash on futons in this video for some odd reason. I sleep on a Japanese futon every nice as my bed. I find it more comfortable than a mattress. though mine is 4 inches thick of machined cotton.
Thanks for the comment. I don't think I bash them too much. I'm just saying it isn't thick and I can't handle them because they give a sore back though 4 inches is pretty thick so I might be able to hand that. I respect those that use them like yourself but I prefer my mattress over these. Although my pillow has more dribble that those ones. :(

Haha yeah takes the fun away but if you double up on the Futons then they are OK to sleep on. I personally wouldn't sleep on their for a long time.
Japan Online, futons sound better than our bulky mattresses. I bet you can fit futons into washing machines. If so, I am interested. It is a pity that our mattresses are too bulky to fit inside washing machines.

What do japanese people do if they have fibromyalgia? This bed arrangement would kill me in no time.
As I don't I live in everyone's house I can't say if this is still the most used method but of the people I have spoken too said the futon is the most comment way to sleep but having a bed is also very popular and becoming more normal. I have a bed at my home in Japan and so do my wife and kids.
I am sure like most countries you should be able to find various beds to sleep on to make your sleep and body as confrontable as possible.

Because no one likes to sleep on an air bed so buying one that would probably last a couple of years would be more wasteful.

When I was a young man I enjoyed what most young party going men liked, such as girls, beer and drugs. I would have sex with any girl, any time and anywhere. For so long I am not sure how many I have been with at this point. I had little to no morals nor cares about anything really. I could see something was there but I was not able to see what it was. Then I heard a disgusting noise coming from it and I told it.

Then I awoke not knowing I was in a dream as the entire dream was where I was and how I was. "Never had a dream like this before and never had another like it again."
The crazy part.... I still felt right where "IT" grabbed me, as if the tightness of its grip was still on me.
To say the least I have seen something that is not normal nor good. There are evil things in this world we can not explain nor understand but I know as true as the air in my lungs. Spirits are real and so is God.

Always Celsius as that is what is used in Japan.

Hopefully it is still set up from the following day. There is a way that you fold them up when you use them every night.
