    Renna is my favorite enduring mystery in Elden Ring, and this video has more info and speculation than any of the other lore channels. Thank you so much for putting all of this together and presenting it so beautifully!

    My off the wall theory
    Renna-grandmother to Ranni, mother to Rennala and Sellen. Sellen and Rennala look ALOT alike in their pictures. 🤷‍♀️

    It would be interesting if Ranni, Rennala, and Renna were a triple goddess analog as the maiden, the mother, and the crone respectively. Sellen could also fill the maiden position if she is indeed a carian princess. It would solidify their link to the moon and might imply that there's a half-moon lurking somewhere.

    • @kitetales
      @kitetales  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      I love the idea of it but I feel the game makes it clear that Renna isn’t attached to the moon like Rennala and Ranni are.

    Wow, what a great job! Way to take all these intricately weaved webs and line them up. I always felt like Renna might have been Renallas mother. Like a tradition kept secret due to the Golden Order. But sister/aunt fits just as well.

      Thank you so much!! Yeah I really like the idea of Renna being Ranni’s grandmother, definitely opens up a lot of room to explore Rennala’s family history that way too! 💙

      Great job indeed!
      Renna as Rennala's mother and Ranni's grandmother has always made the most sense to myself for a number of reasons, from the replies it seems this theory is more popular than I'd thought.
      As for the other princesses in that case, I believe they were all non-demigod children that Rennala had prior to meeting Radagon. It's never said one way or another whether Radagon was her first consort as well as whether or not the three demigods were her first children. That they alone are members of Marika's family explains the disproportionate attention paid to them under Golden Order hegemony. Explanations as to why the pre-Radagon princesses are all dead and gone I think might have to do with the rather grim implications of the cuckoo motif/metaphor vis a vis the life history of european cuckoos.

    Love your videos! :)
    My personal theory is that Renna/The Snow Witch is actually the Gloam Eyed Queen who survived her defeat and retreated to obscurity. Her paths cross with Ranni at one point, she sees Ranni's potential, and proceeds to teach her cold magic. Beyond that, their relationship became close enough that Renna taught Ranni the truth about Marika's regime and what had been done to the Elden Ring and Destined Death. Ranni was born in a Lands Between without death at the height of Marika's rule, so where would she have learned the truth of Destined Death? All mentions of the Gloam Eyed Queen only say she was defeated, not killed. I think it would be neat
    😅

    With regards to the Frozen Needle. This was likely made in service to Ranni's warriors. Inspite of how small her entourage is by present time she apparently did have "warriors" of her own whom used cold based techniques. This is revealed via the Ash of War: Ice Spear - "Skill of the warriors who served Lunar Princess Ranni. Spin armament to release cold magic, then channel it into a piercing spear of ice." It's interesting that this ash of war is recovered from a Night's Cavalrymen.

    • @jbark678
      @jbark678 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Morgott used the calvarymen to fight great enemies of the erdtree, so it makes sense that they might carry a trophy of victory.

    • @Writh811
      @Writh811 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@jbark678 Well that is the most obvious solution, especially since they don't actually use it which reduces the chances of that knight being a defector. But it means that Ranni had warriors devoted to her and all but Blaidd, Iji, Adula, and Selivus may have been wiped out by the Night's Cavalry. I can't help but feel bad for Ranni's old warriors since Night's Cavalry would have been founded after the Shattering and according to ingame dialogue, until right before we came to the Lands Between Ranni hadn't appeared in the Lands Between since the Night of Black Knives. Her loyal warriors had been abandoned.
      In spite of the community's affection for her Ranni is actually kinda heartless and does not reward or really honor loyalty. Even when we go for her ending she tries to discard us, Iji, and Blaidd prior to killing her Fingers. Also I question just how machiavellian she really is in her plotting. Think about it for a second, what was her plan after tossing everyone away save for Adula? She killed her fingers but what real agency does her plot have if we don't show up and insist ourselves on her? Was her plan to support Adula in becoming Elden Lord? I mean she did have that Moonlight Greatsword ready to go already so it must have originally been meant for someone else and through means of magic Adula demonstrates some ability to wield a sword that has cold power attached...
      That last bit about her plan and Adula is popping in my head as I type but holy crap was Ranni's original plan to give Adula her Moonlight Greatsword, effectively marrying Adula and use the Dragon to overthrow the Golden Order? (Might explain why the first time we fight Adula they bail rather than die, gotta preserve the plan) Sorry for the ramble.

    A few notes.
    I saw another video that theories that Marika and the Numen landed in Nokron and Nokstella with their "galleons" before the Age of the Erdtree. Numens are known for being immortal. Known numens are Marika, and the Black Blades (Tiche and her mother Alecto), which also are part of the Nox, i.e. punished for some sin to live underground under a false sky. We know that Marika made herself a goddess queen and embraced the Erdtree, i.e. the greater Will, and founded the Golden Order.
    Now, given the fascination of every Numen except Marika for the stars and the moon(s), and given that we even if we do not know how old people are, we do know that Rennalla is at least as old as Radagorn, meaning she has been around when Godfrey was still alive, and her fascination with the moons and the stars, we can surmise she is reeeeally old, as in immortal as well, or in short she is also a Numen or a daughter to Numens. This is also why her children got the Elden Ring shards, and at least Ranni is an empyrean.
    The thing with Numens is that the most powerful among them can split. Marika did, Miquella did, Morgott did it as well. So Renna could very well be the split of Rennalla... but it would make more sense is Renna were her sister actually: the place *is* called Three Sisters, and the link with Aurelia and Aureliette is strong. And on Sellen: her name in Japanese is Seren (セレン), Renalla is Renara (レナラ) and Renna is Ren (レン), so as you can see they are not that far removed from one another, considering other people in the Carian/Raya Lucaria environs (Seluvis セルブス, Azur, Olivinus, Lusat etc) none comes close to that.
    So, my guess is that Rennalla had two sisters, Renna and Sellen. She was interested in the full moon, Renna in the dark moon, and Sellen, being the youngest and maybe developing her own sorceries when the Erdtree already obscured the sky, in the primeval currents. They came with the other Numens, and established themselves where the skies were the clearest, up on the mountains, in the town now known as the Stargazing ruins. They helped the Zamor in keeping the fire giants in check, until Marika founded the Golden Order and expanded her influence there as well. So when confronted with Godfrey's own armies, they were called to take a decision: either fold or succumb like the giants did.
    Rennalla decided to come down south, and founded the Carian royal house in Liurnia, and Sellen followed suit. Renna would come as well and have her own rise behind the manor, but she either locked herself or has been locked nearby her old home for "heresy". But it bears merit looking for her in the eternal cities as well, since there is certainly a connection between the Numen, the stars, the dark moon, the heresy (which might have to do with the black moon, or the invention of the Fingerslayer dagger, or both) and the punishment for the Nox.
    Now, it can be possible that Godfrey was disposed during this campaign so Marika could send Radagon to woo Rennalla and establish the Carian dinasty, birthing Radahn (Radaan, ラダーン ), Rykard (Raikaado, ライカード) and Ranni (Rani, ラニ), I cant say.
    Last mention: there is another creature with four arms: the finger reading crones...

    Cool analysis ! Gotta say I really like the idea of a strong relation between the "Renna" character and Rennala because far too many people seem to completely ignore the names being so similar which I find very infuriating, it cannot be random !
    The way I see it, either Renna is indeed the name of the snow witch and that most likely means she's a member of the Carian royal family, or it's just some name that Ranni likes and uses when she goes out since we know from Rogier that Ranni's fate is not public knowledge.
    I can't remember where I heard that but there's a theory that links the seven coffins found behind the illusory wall in the church of the cuckoo could represent those missing "Carian Princesses", nothing concrete there, but I find this place and the named towers to be so intriguing that I really like this theory. Giving a role to Chelona and the rest is cool.

Maby it just in my head lol but the area where you get eternal darkness has goats, some female and some male. The males will come up and fight you, but if your like me and unequip your weapons to fistfight like a true champion and show them a crown is warrented by strength, the smart a**es will pretend to run away when your looking, but sneak up on you if your camera isn't on them. oh I was at Siophra river and I realized That area with mohgwyn mausoleum looks exaclty like a meteor struck rite underneath and the explosion destroyed a bunch of those strange trees that the ancestral followers seems to have a connection to. you can tell by the length of the remaining pale trunks that entire area basically got nuked, with some new formed cliffside and sturdy old stone structures keeping the destruction levels lower, but in a way you can see what got destroyed. these stone looking trees im sure are depicted as the stone pillars in those depictions can light with fire. The ancestral followers and the other bodies of dead animals are not present because they were absorbed by these trees for the next part of their own faith. The souls would travel up into the lands between eventually even further and become the stars. When you look at the pictures, pay very close attention to the blue particles because they are part of the picture. they are the souls and the stone beings are the vessels. they had a path of existence that lived natural lives until they would pass on to become stars(symbolized by boats leaving at the top).This is very important because someone did not like this process and had them nuked. And im not saying the nox did it, but their buildings are bunkers meant for eternally surviving the apocalypse. And then look at selia, another nox bunker. But the biggest meteor of all and possibly one of the first in history created an impact crater so big, it most likey reshaped what the lands between used to look like. Thats why the lands between look all cracked and randomly raised from the other ground levels and of course the massive crater at the center of the map. Theres definitly a few more impact sites but whats cool is you get to see one land, some insight as to why, but my favorite, the direction they came from. Almost the exact direction the sun rises and the moon appears.if you look at the bottom of the preceptors hat, instead of the sun being the center of gravity, your forehead with the symbol of a pretty chaotic looking tree is bending space and the stars around it. The tree that used to exist(not the erdtree, another older tree got nuked.) was so big, that it is or was the center of gravity in this universe. That which commands the stars was nuking civilizations with meteors untill Radahn managed to stop them from what he learned from the alabaster lords, who I theorize rose at the Mohgwyn impact site, and taught the nox how to use gravity magic and the onyx lords possably rose with the golden meteor?. I think the golden order is imitating the greater will, and the nox are imitating the golden order, learning from them. The beings that can graft what they want onto themselves and each other. "To imitate the imitator is a cunning act indeed". Radagon and Marika, one being is conjoining everything the other shattered everything, outward. I honestly forget which lord does the repelling gravity and which does the pulling in, but i guarentee those are their ancestors from outside the lands between, two opposite halves of the same gravity magic. One trying to spread infinitly and one trying to become whole. I think the die is cast ending in armored core cracked me even more. lol

    I think Renna is an alterego to Renalla . As a queen she couldnt just go out and do stuff so she had a projection or something. There are a lot of boss characters we can meet multiple times. Maybe even because of the moon . If it was a single entity like a bright side (brilliant and overpowering)and a dark side ( cold and logical) , then Rennala would tech ranni about bright moon and renna would teach her about dark moon .

    The Three Sisters implies there was three sisters either by blood, or by organization or covenant. Chelona’s rise, also asks the question who was this named after? Additionally, there are three structures, each with three statues of women, guarded by a red wolf nearby the rise. This makes me think the sisters could be Renna, Ranni, and ? Some have floated idea that Sellen was the third. I’m uncertain.

  • @michaeljohnston8891

    First, I don’t think the Rises were built near the minor Erdtree intentionally. These are supposed to have sprouted after the Shattering, long after Rennala was ousted from power.
    There’s also a weird connection between the Snow Witch, Mohg’s blood cult, and the Blood Star. Her hat is supposed to have been modeled off those worn by heretical sorcerers. The only other wizard hat we know is connected to heretical sorcerers is Alberich’s hat, who specialized in thorn sorcery and used red glintstone, which given the nature of glintstone, must be related to the Blood Star somehow. The Greathood’s description also has a bit of an unreliable narrator, who clearly saw something strange in the sky and deduced it was Rennala’s guiding moonlight. However, this unreliable narrator seems to be Esgar, one of Mohg’s fanatics that we fight in the sewers. I still don’t have a solid answer on what the connection might be, but it is strange nonetheless.
    On the topic of heretical sorcery, I think that cold sorcery came to be more accepted after Radagon’s and Rennala’s marriage, while Thorn sorcery came to be seen as taboo. The Zamor were heroes of the war with the giants, and now that the Carians were in bed with Marina’s lot, they likely came to be allies. On the other hand, thorn sorcery seems to stem from the giants, as their corpses sprout thorns after death. All the more reason for Radagon to be so secretive, as he seems to be able to manipulate thorns himself.
    Lastly, with Sellen attempting to restore the primeval current, I think she’s trying to bring the world closer to the stars themselves in pursuit of knowledge. Besides the Eternal Cities, the only other place we find a false night sky is in the weird room in the Academy with a Graven Mass inside, clearly the work of Sellen

      I really like the idea Renna could be Ranni’s grandmother! The only reason I think they might be sisters is because of the Aurelia and Aureliette tombstones at the Stargazers Ruins; it just seems so pointed a connection to the area in regards to Rennala that I assumed it was a hint about the naming convention for sisters. It’s so hard to know what is relevant for this game’s lore!

    So I think the nature of Rennala and Radagon's story is very much meant to be an allegory for the Moon and Sun respectively; they were literally star-crossed lovers, and Radagon, being an agent of the Golden Order, is systemically part of the colonizing light of gold that polluted the Lands Between. I had a theory a while ago that, for the Demigods, the Golden Order keeps them in line by making them wear golden armaments-- Godrick wears golden ribbons and a crown, Malenia wears the golden prosthetics, Godfrey rips off the golden lion that kept his warrior state bound by honor... and Rennala wears a golden crown, and her vision (her "stargazers", if you will), locked eternally in view of the golden amber egg.
    I also suspect that this isn't just a colonizing force, but is one that grafts their divine authorities to the Erdtree: Grafted, Rot, Greater Willpower (being grafted from the Warrior-King), and from Rennala, the Gaze of the Primeval Current that could map out the Stars (the pantheon of Outer Gods)-- this is why I think the Elden Beast's body contains the visions of the stars across the universe, but it has veins of gold that stretch out, seeking to colonize all the outer reaches of this divine vision.
    Yet, I think at some point, Radagon's love was legitimate for Rennala-- it is mentioned in the Giant's Red Braid that Radagon despised his red locks that all fire giants had; I think this implies that he was, in another life, the leader of the Fire Giants (Fire Giants being just a fancy nickname for "the Stars"), and Rennala, being the Stargazer, fell in love with him at first sight.
    The downfall of the Fire Giants happened when Marika besieged the Fire Giants (Stars), and they attempted to summon the Fell God to stop her... yet, I think they made the mistake to not realize they were the same thing-- Radagon is Marika... at least, after she had already ascended to Eternal status (the genesis of her Eternal status is hard to explain as it's a broad religious concept, but for a biblical example, it's like when Eve ate the golden apple and she and Adam were permanently banished from the Garden of Eden for eternity, and people will forever argue about the origination when it's literally a paradise lost; the opposite end of this being apocalypse tales that are always imminent threats that never arrive.)
    The Fell was coming from inside of Radagon (similar to how we see the Sun conjured in the eye of the Fire Giant's belly, only after he makes a sacrifice to the god by burning his leg.) Marika, after all, is also grafted to the Fell Omen and the Curseblood. Mother of Truth craves wounds.
    A few more pieces of evidence:
    -Enia describes the Mountaintop of the Giants as being "above the clouds"
    -Selivus's hat is based on the Souzhou star chat, and his head/face (which is threaded shut to keep Radagon's secrets) is at the center of the map (making him the Sun)
    -Radagon likely ruled from the Seat of the Sun which has long since faded away (Sun Realm Shield), but Leyndell is built atop the Deeproot Depths where the Nameless Eternal City waypoint can be found.
    -Miquella is partially associated with the eclipse (the moment of Sun and Moon converging as one-- which might be why Rennala is not only a Queen but a mother of demigods in Marika's reality), with his Haligtree being hidden beyond Castle Sol. Where Ranni is brought to and adopts the Heterodoxy of the Dark Moon, Miquella reversely abandoned Golden Order Fundamentalism after reshaping it three major times (might relate to the Triple Goddesshood of lunar deities in classical mythology symbolizing the lunar cycles... also, St. Trina.)
    "Lady Ranni has departed on her journey. Along the dark path of the Empyrean, from Renna's Rise, as she calls it."
    Renna I think is related to Rennala in the time of Genesis, and she was a snow witch because the snow itself relates to the twinkling stars, with a "Consecrated Snowfield" being a sacred site to honor the stars collectively (allegory for the holy vision of a galaxy of stars.) Her rise matches the path of the Dark empyrean because she was like the Waxing Moon, and reached ascension/death/convergeant grafting as Rennala, Carian Queen of the Full Moon over Raya Lucaria Academy, and has even since remained in a waning state, cursed by the Fell. Just as the lost Black Moon of the eternal cities now hangs lifelessly in the sky above Moonlight Altar, So too must Ranni, the lifeless Empyrean of the Dark Moon must meet her fate to usher in the Age of Stars.

Seeking to be free from her fate as a pawn of the Greater Will, Godwyn's step-sister Lunar Princess Ranni stole a fragment of the rune of death from Maliketh, imbuing the weapons of Numen assassins with the rune. Ranni wished to shed her Empyrean body but preserve her spirit, which meant that someone else's spirit would need to die. Nevertheless, when the assassins fell upon the Royal Capital and murdered Godwyn, his soul was destroyed and left only his soulless body behind. He was the first demigod in history to die since the ascension of Marika to the throne of the Lands Between. And I’m wondering if he is possibly a relative of Sellen, thus her admiration of them?
