I started out thinking of the injuries as a fun bit and eventually found it to be making a very serious point: that these picks are concerned with the *impact* of violence, rather than merely the most extreme depictions of it.

RIP Juan. He came back just to die.
So good to see that Guyotat novel on here. That one is such an amazing exploration of the brutality of war and colonization. There's a bestiality scene in it that absolutely haunts my nightmares.
I have that same Salitter edition too. They're pretty awesome and they're doing amazing work preserving these texts like this. I'm always a little reluctant to shout them out, because I'm afraid some busy body Karen will go complain and get their work taken down.
John Baltisberger, who runs the press that published my play collection, actually said the same thing about Titus Andronicus being the first work of splatterpunk. I still need to read it.

Some of Beth B's short films bring to mind the work of Peter Sotos. In some of her pieces, individuals recount their personal traumas, which can be quite intense and potentially triggering. While her work isn’t as extreme as Buyer’s Market, it still delves into deeply unsettling territory. Her films seem to explore the lasting effects of generational trauma, presenting a raw and thought-provoking perspective.

I was JUST going to mention Tool if you didn't do it in this video, and you did! But actually, I want to give you a slight correction:
"Tool" is technically a collection of different stories, and the first one is the one you're referring to. It is simply referred to as "ONE" in the book, but it actually originally appeared under the title "Quality Time" in the fourth issue of the magazine "Answer Me!' in 1994. By the way, that whole fourth issue (known as "The R*pe Issue") might be worth checking out - most of the pieces are juvenile attempts to be edgy, but there may be other very shocking pieces in it. I wouldn't know personally because I ain't reading any more of that sh*t after the trauma of "Quality Time."
Anyways, that printing is particularly interesting because the story is illustrated with some very early artwork by the now famous artist Trevor Brown. It was also illustrated with photos of real children, including one that appeared to be a (censored) photo from a crime scene depicting the n*de body of a dead child. So yeah...
Another element you might be interested in is the fact that throughout his work, Sotos clearly has a fixation on one particular real-world crime: the abuse and murder of Leslie Ann Downey by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley. He has very specifically referenced it and focused on it time and again, starting from the time of "Pure," and continuing for at least two decades, possibly all the way up to the present - I haven't checked. In any case, the murder was noteworthy for being audiotaped and photographed, but with only a few minutes and a couple photos released publicly, if I remember correctly. In any case, "Quality Time" is very clearly directly based on the circumstance of this particular murder. Many of the details, including specifics such as the specific age (10) and I believe even the exact phrasing of one notorious section are the same.
Anyways, to me, this is the most fucked up thing I've ever read - or rather, attempted to read. I have repeatedly peeked into it hundreds of times now, reading just short bits, and it always just feels like it drains all the joy from my life. To sit down and read the full thing, start to finish seems an insurmountable task to me. Which is interesting because if you look carefully, the story does not actually have very vivid descriptions in it, for the most part. It's hard to explain, but everything about the story feels so genuinely cruel, authentically sadistic - it manages to conjure a gruesome, believable scene of dread, terror, and hopelessness with very little description. I'm curious if this one affected you the most out of shorter works, or if there are any other short stories you've read that were worse?
Sorry for the incredibly long rambling comment, but this story is utterly insane and really kind of needs a long-winded discussion. Hopefully TH-cam doesn't censor this lol.

I imagine maybe my comment came off ruder than I intended it because we don't know each other and I always appreciate your content, especially from a leftist lens that speaks with levity rather than pessimism. I'm completely unable to read his work or listen to Whitehouse(which to be fair is pretty unlistenable anyway) but the name pops up from time to time across the avant garde/black metal and noise/subversive art sphere, I was just cracking a joke about it.
The Bible was a great choice for abhorrent epic fiction, though 😉.

The point of Job is not that it’s a “bet” it’s that it’s a TRIAL. The name Satan comes from the Hebrew word for “accuser/adversary” and in Bronze Age Judaic culture this was the term used to refer to their equivalent of a “prosecutor”.
Job is set up at the beginning of the story to represent all of/the best of mankind (“there is none like him/ he is blameless”), which Satan (the prosecution) contests that at his core Job, like all of mankind, is corrupted and selfish. Satan should know, the way he introduces himself to God when asked where he has been is that he has been traveling across the earth (presumably observing the worst that humanity has to offer). God allows Job to suffer not to necessarily prove it to Satan, but to settle an ancient cosmological dispute- is man good or bad in his nature? The way The Prosecution plans to do this is to break Job to his most bare and reduced state.
In this trial Satan is the prosecutor, God is the judge, and mankind (exemplified through the “blameless” Job) is the unwitting defense.
At the end of the story, Job never gets a satisfying answer from God, but the reader DOES. It’s an early example of dramatic irony. Job doesn’t know why he is tested by God but the audience the poem was written for (I.e. 8th century bc Jewish people) DO know, they know that, without realizing it, Job has proven the goodness of human kin and, in doing so, has paved the way for their own Salvation through God’s favor and love. Job is never made privy to what he has actually done, but that’s sort of the point- none of us are truly privy to the full nature of our suffering. At best we only understand small glimpses of it. It is easy to imagine that there is no point at all, that suffering is only ever suffering and there is no reason at all, but God’s speech at the end suggests to us that, no matter how awful, unfair, or seemingly random, there is a point to everything, man is but a small thing, he is not entitled to know everything- so in times of unbearable suffering, the only thing we can do is hold on to what we know is right and not forsake it.
Job is a criminally misinterpreted book because so much of its subtext is completely dependent on tacit implications that would be understood by its original audience but largely are not by modern audiences who live in an unrecognizable reality comparatively speaking. It’s a dark poem, but at its end it’s an exceptionally hopeful one. It’s by far my favorite book of the Bible and it has helped me through severe bouts of suicidal depression multiple times.

I don't think Peter Sotos is a diddler, but more someone who stared so long into the abyss, it stared back. The way he documents transgressive ideas feels like an attempt to document *how* these people think, as an almost blueprint to understanding them. Oftentimes, the stark portrayal can feel sympathetic or confessional, even. His form of violence reminds me more of a movie like "Come and See" than it does something like "Terrifier." There's a much deeper analysis intended beyond just "revel in my edginess."

    • @PlaguedbyVisions
      @PlaguedbyVisions  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I used to think this way about him, too, until he said in an interview that when police raided his house they didn’t even find all the rest of the CP he had. Whether for provocation or not, distribution of those materials repulses me, given that I was a victim of such crimes as a kid. So I choose to mark Sotos as a diddler. Idk. But your analysis of his writing, of course, I agree with! Hugs.
