In the UK democracy seems to exist more in theory than in practice. The two major parties have MPs who seem to vote according to party lines rather than as their electorate would wish. The budget is largely spent before the discretionary spending parties can choose to spend on one project or another is a very small part of the whole budget. Most things the parties promise are unlikely to happen as they were described when soliciting votes. That can cause one to become disillusioned and demoralised and loose what little trust was left in the political process. Our opinions and votes seem to make little or no impact on everyday life for most people. The integrity of the government seems to be notable by it's absence whichever party is in charge.
I need to disengage to get out of this funk since the US election...I don't feel enthusiastic and I am just sad! I want to be hopeful, but I'm finding it difficult! I am thankful to be in Portugal!!
@AmandoMarques I know that I feel safe, love the kind people, have a comfortable life and found 'home'!!❤Portugal I do know the history and thankfully it's a part of yhe EU and notice all of the upgrades in roads and infrastructure...I just love it here!
With all the news that is available, yes it can drive people into "depression". Maybe a big word. But for sure with all the negative news, it won't make you happy. I've done it in recent years, ignore the news for a week, or two weeks. But slowly you get back into it. Like an addiction maybe. I mean, you literally get Everything on your screen. Some weird disease in Nigeria, a boat that went down in Kongo. People who drowned trying to reach the Canary Islands in a small boat. All bad things, disasters, wars, earth quakes. I've never been in Nigeria, and i have no plans to ever go there. The same for Kongo. It's terrible that accidents happen there, or that people die of diseases, yes of course. But what use is it for me to get all that information, on a daily basis? So two possibilities, when you have read it, just ignore after that. Or (theoretically) it could keep you busy all day thinking, how bad it is, and how sad. Both ways not at all ideal. Do we need or want to know everything? Maybe it's just to much for the average person. Maybe even meant to get people into a negative state of thinking (?).
For me, I have a lot of friends and even neighbors who feel compelled to share their political opinions frequently with me. I really wish they would disengage. I will make one prediction: The Musk / Trump relationship will not last and will end very badly indeed.
