Okay, I sang this back in high school choir and had completely forgotten its existence. Then it comes up on this playlist. And suddenly I remember EVERY SINGLE DANG LINE/HARMONY/CUTOFF. Human brain = weirdness
I LOVE that you love specific parts. All of it is wonderful..but certain parts give me shivers. That very last note that slides into major just does me in.
I sang this piece 20 years ago as a freshman in my HS choral ensemble. It's 2019 and I haven't heard or sang it since back then and I still remember the entire bass part. I dont know why i looked it up. I was just thinking about it and i figured id give it a shot and just look it up. It is One of the greatest, most emotional pieces of choral music to sing as a large group choir. Its a roller coaster of emotional, passionate ups and downs....And that harmony at the end, tho!!! In a large choir it feels like you are literally in a tunnel of sound, I'll never forget it. I'm in tears singing it with the video.
I randomly remembered this awhile trying to sleep at 10:30 at night and got out of bed and sorted through all of my old playlists to find this absolute masterpiece. This is the only version I’ll listen to 🔥🔥🔥
I heard a men's Glee club sing this back in the 60's. One of my little brothers just lost his wife today, so I searched for this song. Thank you to all the members of this choir, the conductor and instrumentalists. You all did a fantastic job! The passion with which this was sung brought many tears to my eyes, as was meet.
That. Was. Amazing. We are singing this in my high school's concert choir and this is the most beautiful rendition. It's very well done rhythmically and the dynamics are beautifully executed. Thank you for your time in singing this piece. Absolutely gorgeous.
I sang this piece in Paris in 1980 with the University Chorale of Boston College at Les Invalides. When we hit that final chord, the Parisians went absolutely apeshit and would not stop shouting and clapping until we sang the entire piece all over again. It's so simple, yet so powerful -- this group in this video does an OUTSTANDING job with it!
It's my last year. My mixed chorus just sang this last week for the final performance. I did the Alto part as well. I think this was the only song I enjoyed doing. Don't want it to be over lol
I sang this 21yrs ago with my vocal class in a choir competition and still remember all the words and soprano part to this very day. It's a song that definitely stays with you. lol
First piece I ever sang with a really good choir. State sectional choir as a high school sophomore. I remember, at the first practice, hearing that final note and looking in awe at my buddy next to me. We couldn't believe such a sound was possible. Wonderful performance here, thanks.
This song never looses its appeal. It is the soul in the depths of grief totally dependent on Jesus to take him home. Bless you as you sing it. It touches the heart.
I hope that everyone who sings this spiritual does so with the voice of those who originally sang it, remembering the reasons. Not just to use this song for the glory of their own talent and vocalbeauty. It would be easy to do so, but we must remember whose voices this was for. ✝️ ❤ 🙏
I was praying this morning to be lead to a Spirit filled song. This popped up. I use to sing this song with a group over 25 years ago.. It does not fit in this time on earth but it speaks of the soul longing for parents and for Jesus. So beautiful now for me now that I am old. Someday I will meet my Jesus...I'm going to live with God.
This performance gave me goosebumps!!!! That rarely happens!!!? From the scores of MPA I'm going to give this a superior!!! Congrats my fellow choir members
I dedicate this to Mrs Lilly Kay Placek Grehan, may you sing beautiful songs/hymns in heaven. I will love and think of you always. I remember when you were choir director and this hymn is forever in my soul. Thank you so very much for teaching me the love of our lords words. You are now forever free of pain and have long lasting peace. You are now with GOD.
I didn’t even sing this song, the other choir in my high school did. And it was phenomenal then. Such a beautiful song. And beautifully performed. Makes me cry every time. Such meaning and love and energy in this song.
The tenor section is strong,Very Distinguishable. I love the Strong ending on this song. Our high school varsity choir is doing this, and I gotta say this is one of my favorite Varsity songs we've done so far... Joshua High School if you were wondering, our director is Mr. Stephen Johnson, an all around great teacher.
That last note made my hairs stand on end. Makes me miss our high school's old choir. They were half the size of this one, but equal in comparison in how brilliant they were. Unfortunately, we have even gotten smaller, but we pull through. JOIN CHOIR! It's worth it.
You guys have such amazing tenors..and love the song. I listened to this song for aver four years and the last chord still gives me goosebumps. Great job!
This is bringing back memories from high school choir... at a PUBLIC school too (it was in 1997). We sang this song, and at about the same tempo too. We sang several other spirituals as well, including "Ain't Got Time To Die". You guys did a great job singing, and thank you for sharing it on youtube! God bless you guys!
My choir is learning this for contest and I’m so fricking excited. We played this recording and class and every single person’s jaw just dropped. We’re all so pumped
I remember singing tenor in this song with my choir a year ago. It felt so amazing to bring this beautiful piece to life and I always wish I can have the chance to sing it again. Though this group does a much slower tempo than what I'm used to hearing, they really do the song justice. I still got a lot of goosebumps and my eyes are actually now irritated from all the tears it caused me to shed. Very well done!
As a choir director, I am perplexed at all the negative comments regarding this presentation. This is their interpretation. It's art. As longs as the notes, dynamics, intonation etc. are correct it's all good. Some of you people are in too deep.
I'm getting goosebumps everywhere!!!! I just love this piece!!! I'm recommending this piece to my choir director and seeing if my choir can sing this on our choir tour:D
We're singing this in my school choir for an upcoming festival, and though it is hard as heck to sing, it is a beautiful piece! Thank you for posting such a wonderful rendition of this song!
This brings back many memories! *teary-eyed* We sang this as one of our songs during a HS competition many light years ago. I was the only soprano singing the soprano's part during "I want to meet my Jesus" & sang the soprano's ending an octave higher than the rest of the sopranos at the very end. I was so scared of messing up while performing but pulled it off successfully. You guys sound magical! TYSM for sharing w' us in YT Land! *looking for my VHS tape now* Pe@ce & Blessings, Indigo
It must have sounded like angels, as does this. Very thrilling. I got to sing soprano in The Messiah. I wish we could have sung this piece but the directress changed her mind.
Sang this with family members and friends as the premiere performance of the East Bay Chorus of RI back in the 70s...our performance hall was the first church built in Rhode Island, still being used today...and it is still one of my favorite spirituals to remember and enjoy. This is such a brilliant rendition...touching, strong, convincing! Our Choir director emeritus...Chuck Mello...would be all tingles over the execution!!
Actually, I really do like this interpretation of this piece. This tempo is perfect. Most choirs tend to speed it up and then have issues with trying to shove dynamics into it. Beautiful bass section.
used to sing it faster but darker back in the old days. but come to think of it. it is a song of hope!!! imagine meeting God and your loved ones in heaven! it's joy unspeakable! faster, slower, darker, brighter...if someone gets touched, it has served its purpose :) cheers.
This is amazing! I absolutely loved this performance. Everyone did an awesome job. Especially the young men. I sung this piece in choir back in high school. Spirituals were our choir's specialty. You all definitely captured the point of this song. Awesome job!
I cant say how amazing this performance is. My choir did this song and I think you guys pretty much owned every part of this song. Post more songs like this
I went to my church camp for music week, and we learned this song, and our director had us watch this video so we would know how its suppose to go, I love this song

Yep, that happens to me too!
Muscle memories hit hard😂
I am a tenor voice and learnt this song today. That last chord is just magical... Its so poweful
This is probably one of the most perfect runs of this song that I've ever heard. That was STELLAR
+acensionSUCKS u should hear Acappella and then talk about STELLAR.
Definitely agree!
Too slow!
Yes it's perfect.
i heard one of my colleges best choirs sing it and i cried and everyone was like
WHATS WRONG
My Favorite part of this song is when the bass says "no more weeping" and the ending part going to the second time around ❤ .. just beautiful
I LOVE that you love specific parts. All of it is wonderful..but certain parts give me shivers. That very last note that slides into major just does me in.

I sang this in high school and I've been singing it so much lately! Even after 4 years I still know the alto part
this year for me UIL :D very hard
So did I. Sends chills doesn't it. I wanted to see if the Swedish Radio Choir ever did this but these people are pretty good.

Perfection!!! So amazing!!! I got chills! :) :) Only a choir member would understand the beauty of this.
That's true. Only we really feel it.❤
Excellent. I agree that the tenors are wonderfully strong and clear.
Beautiful - The setting is Camelback Bible Church, Paradise Valley, AZ - one of the greatest acoustics for singing in the country.
Thank you- I wondered where. Who are they?
Incredible. Absolutely incredible. I love that the voice parts are physically staggered over the risers.
I been rehearsing this shit so much with my school chorus that it was stuck in my head so I just had to listen to it

Wonderful choir! And nice recording too- you can't capture that sound without a great recording setup! Fantastic singing and direction!
Excellent tempo to start off with...A little more soul (feeling) to CAPTURE the trueness of the piece. BEAUTIFUL sound and excellent Harmony
