Sarek, Europe's Last Great Wilderness: A trek from Ritsem to Saltoluokta

- Lying inside the Arctic Circle, with no roads, signed trails, wardened huts, or motorised access, Sarek National Park was established in 1909 and covers 1.970 square kilometres. This most famous of Sweden's national parks is a roughly circular expanse of genuine wilderness, one of Europe’s last; a daunting, glaciated, inaccessible region of 2,000 metre high mountains, densely vegetated trough valleys, unforgiving high-alpine plateaux and turbulent ice-cold rivers fed by glacial meltwater. The landscape feels decidedly primordial, perhaps because the last remnants of the vast Fennoscandian Ice Sheet only receded from the mountains of eastern Sarek some 9,000 years ago, just after the end of the Pleistocene epoch.
Sarek lies at the very heart of the Laponia Area, part of the homeland of the indigenous Sámi people (also known as Laplanders). Laponia was recognised as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996, as it is the largest area in the world (and one of the last) with an ancestral way of life based on the seasonal movement of livestock in the form of semi-domesticated reindeer.
The only trails found here are those created by the migration paths formed over thousands of years by foraging reindeer herds, which the Sámi in turn followed.
The routes in and out of Sarek are dictated by the enormous valleys that separate its icy massifs, providing corridors into the heart of the national park. The nearest access points are a day away from any trail head, and crossing the park is a serious undertaking, a truly exhilarating experience you are unlikely to forget in a hurry.

I was been myselfe many times for hiking in the swedish an norwegian mountains. This wonderfull film is an nice rememberin to my owen tours and it shows me, that it is possible to do again, even when I'm not young...

@@EtherealLightPhotography Thats the same with me. All the foto equipment ad a lot of weight. I use Sonys alpha 7 serie and since some mounth the A1. Sorry for my orthographic mistakes, so far I saw them, I did correct them.

@@EtherealLightPhotography I'm just back in the UK after following the Nordkalotteleden and then your exact route through the Sarek to Saltoloukta from Ritsem. It was a fantastic wilderness and many thanks for your lovely video that inspired me and your invaluable blog notes. In fact my month was very adventurous as due to days of very heavy rain the rivers were all a lot deeper and more fast flowing and I had to wade through at least 20 in the Sarek region with rubber shoes and two poles being essential as well as following crossing guidelines. The first obstacle was, in your Day 3, where the river splits into 3 icy melt-water channels. It was neck high and formed a huge half km. wide lake which was impassable but by the next morning had gone down to knee height, which was still scary to wade across on my own. But by far the more difficult was the crossing of the Mahtujagasj river which was thigh high and the awesome Tjagnarisjagasj which was knee high. I sat for 20 minutes on the far side to let my adrenaline settle back down. I slept in my little Hilleberg Enan at the same 3 small lakes at the high pass where you did before the descent towards Saltaloukta and I managed to wade across the river Avtsusjjahka at the end of the lake although it was navel deep and I'm 6 ft tall. I'm now 70 and it felt like a real achievement thanks to the inspiration you gave me. My advice to anyone would be to build in several extra days in travel plans in case of having to wait for water to subside. All the Best John

Awesome M&S what a marathon of mountains and wilderness! you two must be fit as fiddles, your footage is such a joy to watch so easy on the eye, the time-lapse at 11:20 was so good. Great to see you got some epic night lapses in too with the northern lights kicking off. Always good to see the trusty Terra Nova out on your adventures. I know these kind of videos take up hours of prep but its obvious to see that you get as much pleasure doing the video as you do the adventure its self. Sarek was something else and is highly recommended. The Terra Nova tent is still going strong, although we need to get the mesh zip fixed. Thanks for kind comments. We love Arctic Sweden and this was the most remote of all the treks that we have done there. We very enjoyed the trek and were fortunate to have good weather as I imagine it wouldn't be so nice in bad weather. @@EtherealLightPhotography I subbed to your channel a while ago after watching your Greenland trip. I'm thinking about a trip to Sarek next year probably late August or early Sept so really helpful to get sense of the terrain which you cannot tell from the map alone. Thanks.
@@davemorland9452 Thanks for the update. Good luck with planning your trip. There's a book (in Swedish) which you might find useful and I can send you details if you wish. Late Aug or early Sept is the best for the Autumn colours (and less biting insects). Just check the closing dates for huts and the ferry. The only problem we had was getting back to the start where we had left our vehicle as the bus didn't meet the boat. But another hut warden gave us a lift part way and we caught up with the bus.

It's only available in Swedish, and includes descriptions of 28 itineraries with alternative routes; tips on 55 summit trips and other day trips; details of starting points and transport; and is handsomely illustrated with quality images and mountain maps to a scale of 1:100,000. We found the 1:100,000 Fjällkartan map sheet BD10 (Sareks nationalpark published in Nov. 2012) to be very useful too.Happy trekking!

Wow! Beautiful video! May I ask a question? Maybe a stupid one, but I am doing my first hike this year and I wonder how you handle the hygiene? Like "showering" ?
Thanks for your comment. Sarek is completely ‘off grid’ and there’s no facilities except at the huts at the start and end. We burnt waste were possible or carried it out. For human waste you need need to dig a small hole with a suitable trowel and if possible burn toilet paper. Remember to keep away from water sources. You can wash in the rivers or lakes but they are cold and you shouldn’t pollute them with soap. Your feet get washed in the river crossings! We wear woollen underwear and base layers which don’t smell even after a week of wearing but we took separate wool base layers for sleeping. Hope this helps. Good luck if you go to Sarek it’s a fantastic place but make sure that you are ok with your navigation skills as there are no markers. Martin and sharron

Hi there Catherine! Yes, using a wood-burning Honey stove meant we only had to carry one large gas canister with us for the week as a back up. We didn't even use all the gas, as there was plenty of fuel lying about to feed the Honey stove, and with it being dry weather, everything was tinder crisp. Sarek was amazing, and we want to return there again!

Fabulous. One question. Are people permitted to collect the reindeer antlers in the park? Not permitted in US.

Thanks for your comment. Length of film is subjective. We make a mix of material, so this 7-day trek crossing Sweden's wilderness is primarily a record of the terrain for others thinking of tackling it, hence it is a longer offering.

Hi there! Is it possible to walk that trek in 6 days?
Hi Daniel! Yes, it would be possible to do the trek we did in 6 days. We were walking around 14-15 kms on average each day. So if you push that total up towards 20 then you could do it. The terrain is pretty brutal in parts though, and your days will be long.
