He might be a bit over the top but at least he gets things done. The king is a bit complacent, lets crime go rampant in the capital, lets a war go for 3 years before he decides to help.
Daemon doesn't seem to want the throne as much as he wants to serve and protect his brother. It is the King's weakness to trust those who do not deserve it. Daemon is able to see it. The reason he's not trusting in Otto. Because the son died, now Daemon knows Rhaenerya is in trouble being a female.And, Otto makes his move. So he was right all along. Duty, tradition, loyalty and love will have him protect Rhaenrya. He is aware that her throne is in danger.
He just want his brother trust and he act out just for his attention & all the things he did even in a reckless way was done for the King but Vicerys doesnt believe him

Fighting the Crabfeeder alone showed bravery and strength, while Daemon sees his brother as weak. Daemon is aware of how the people think of the Targaryens and he showed Rhaenyra. He thinks that Otto is using the King for his own personal gain. And, his brother is blind to all these issues and more, which is weakening his crown.

Yet Otto SPIES on him Constantly and Relentlessly. Daemon was always pushed from Kings landing when deep down all he ever wants(ed) is to help his brother by any means possible. Daemon Targaryen is my favorite Targaryen. Loyal, Brutal, Savage, Romantic and Absolute in his duties to protect family. It deeply saddens me that Viserys and Daemon had distance. I am fiercely loyal to Daemon. More loyal than to any character than I have read about and watched about.

I don't think he is really after the throne, he loves power for sure (who's not) but hates boring stuff. Throne is not the right position for him and he is fully aware of this fact. I think he just loves to mess around while his brother keeps rejecting his genuine intention (and distinctive way) to protect his throne & family.
