Lisa Chua You would be surprised that there are some Japanese who will just tsk someone loudly in Japan hahaha
      Other things are like:
Doesn’t reject invitation directly and making you guess until the last minute.
Complimenting and apologising excessively but actually don’t mean it most of the time.
Pushing you in a non polite way, stepping on your feet and leaning their bodies on you in a packed train.
Making girls “serve” their male colleagues in drinking parties
Subordinates cannot leave their work earlier than the boss

We cant always trust one another to be nice people after all x'D But if theres someone in need and we can help, we usually do. I myself fainted in a mrt station before due to my low blood sugar, im alone and people around me does express their concern. Someone even suggested to phone the ambulance while some even helped me up on my arms respectfully. Some aunties even stayed nearby to ensure i am not taken advantage of neither. I'm actually quite afraid of driving in Singapore because everyone is always rushing!! MRT wise.. the rushing mostly happens at peak hours, because everyone is scared to be late for work. I've visited countries like Korea and China, and I'd say it's not that bad in Singapore - yes it can't hold a candle to Japan, but it's still decent. At least I didn't get pushed hard at peak hours in Singapore... but I get bulldozed in China and Korea even at off peak (I mean like people literally pushing their whole body against you), that's really scary!

I have to say you must be one of the lesser foreigners staying in Singapore who is keen to explore the heartland areas here in Singapore. I guess you staying in HDB flat lets you see a more local atmosphere. Your comments are quite accurate, so don't have to worry if anyone may feel disturbed. The good and sad point about Singapore is that we are built on a strict law systems; good as in people are all made to follow, bad probably doesn't let people to think out of the box
As for manners for example at the MRT station, I do agree we are still far from perfect. Things did improve the past few years, which I may believe that social media plays an important part because if you may be video by others if you are "selfish" in the public.
By the way, off topic. The building in this video, there is a shop (second floor) which sells toiletries at very affordable prices. Don't go on weekends daytime, else you will be packed with many customers squeezing around.

What I mean to say is that most (not all) foreigners may not explore the heartland areas or stay in the HDB flats like Ghib does. Of course this is not a statement that's saying for all foreigners in Singapore. To be honest, I don't recall seeing a Caucasian or Japanese staying in the HDB flats in my area.
But then again, cannot blame tourist / foreigners for that, because most holiday guides (Singapore) will likely bring you the most upmarket and commercialised places, most likely won't bring you to catch a bite or landmark off the touristy area. I remember Ghib filmed the Tampines West CC clock tower. WOAH, to be honest as a local myself, I didn't know that and I had to google too.

You are taught from very young to be courteous, respectful and kind by your family and mannerism is not a product, where you have work in progress. It is incorrect and pathetic to use the length the country has been in existence, as if you do not learn good manners, you will never ever learn and hence you have punishment of people who littered wearing a sandwich board and picking up rubbish during lunch time. I agree with the people here having bad manners like the MRT example, and also the toilet cleanliness is incomparable to Japan even thou we have cleaners stationed at the toilets. Because of the way our education works, many parents emphasize a lot into academic but not on moral educations. That is why there is this "high self-entitlement" status in Singapore, like what you have talk about the "selfishness". Additional to that, SG population is well-mixed with foreigners so it is pretty hard to point fingers at who are the problematic ones. So most of the time I use the phrase "people living here" rather than Singaporeans. I find your videos very down to earth and accurate. Keep it up :)

Japanese, Canadians, and New Zealanders are the most polite, courteous, well-mannered people. Compared to them, Singaporeans can appear boorish, uncouth, uncultured, and even rude. Not to make excuses, but it is the norm in Singapore. If you drive in Singapore (compared to your hometown), it would be even more obvious.
The Japanese is (in my experience) the most eusocial people, or at least ONE of the most eusocial people. When in Japan, I am impressed by the "no talking on the phone" while on the trains. In Singapore this is not a social norm. Even on the Shinkansen, there is a "please be considerate if your working on your laptop may cause nuisance to others." I was on a long distance train ride once, and a fellow passenger (in business suit) was working away on a laptop. I just glanced over for a moment, and he stopped working and put away his laptop.
BUT, it is NOT the norm for the Japanese to offer seats to elderly on the trains. Then again, every other person in Japan is elderly. So where do you start? Or end?
Masks, was an interesting point. In Japan, you wear a mask when you are sick to protect others from your illness. In Singapore, the rush to get face masks was so that Singaporeans can protect themselves from the coronavirus. They are not wearing masks because they are sick. They are wearing masks because of fear (or rather panic).
Less rigid working "rules" - good point. But for service staff, lateness is still generally unacceptable. If your service counter needs to be opened by 8.00 you would need to be there before 8. But for office (non-front line staff) workers, there is some leeway.
But if a Japanese visitor expects omotenashi standard of service, then that is only found in Japan. Well, almost definitely not found in Singapore. But that is a very high standard.

I am singaporean and you are right about the toilet cleanliness part. Even in Bangkok, the toilets in old shopping complexes like MBK is kept immaculately clean. Thanks to their hardworking toilet attendants who work religiously to keep their toilets spick and span and the toilet etiquette of the Thais. We sure got a lot to learn from them.
The toilets in coffeeshops and hawker centres here are mostly filthy and wet, as we are still a long way off.
We need a mindset change, that is to be less selfish and to think of others more like the Japanese. Our late LKY once said,"I have gotten Singapore out of the hole, but singaporeans still have the man-in-the-hole mentality."I believe education is the key.

I believe manners are very well taught in japan when they are young, the children in japan wear their own shoes, socks, clothes, while in singapore, the little brat are spoilt by parents, and they grow to become ill mannered. NOT ALL but most, so we should consider starting with the man in the mirror and our children. Good manners from young.

From another perspective, here are my two cents …
    The subway situation :
As a Singaporean who had worked in Tokyo, getting to work via the subway during morning rush hours were always a big challenge for me. While it’s true that people do generally wait for alighting passengers to get off the subway first before boarding, there is actually a subway train pusher or oshiya 押し屋 at each platform during morning rush hours who regulates the passenger flow into the train and he will signal the train driver to close the train doors once everyone is safely tucked into the train. Passengers know that they will not miss getting into the train when they wait for alighting passengers to get off first before boarding. However, I often had to push my way out once I reached my destination. I tried to be polite by saying sumimasen before but nobody cares to give way at all. Actually, I was once pushed out of the train when someone tried to get off prior to my destination. On another occasion, I missed getting off at my destination because there were just too many passengers blocking the exit.
    Japanese politeness :
My experience has been quite different between me as a visitor to Japan and as a co-worker working with the Japanese both in Japan and in Singapore. What appears as Japanese politeness as a visitor is totally different when you are working as a co-worker. As a visitor, you are much welcome since you are bringing money into their economy. But as a non-Japanese co-worker, you are often looked upon as a common target competitor if you outperform your Japanese co-workers. While it’s common to find superficial politeness, it’s very difficult to find true sincerity as friends or confidants from amongst your Japanese co-workers. Even while working in Singapore ( my home country) in a Japanese company, there is a general feel of alienness much like I were working in Japan - almost as if I am working in a foreign land. You will always be the dispensable item as a non-Japanese co-worker whenever there is an economic downturn despite your performance and past contributions to the company.

Very honest and true opinion. Good to see from foreigner perspective. Alot more room for improvement, but some parts are so deep rooted, it will take a few generations before things will change. I believe most singaporeans look up to Japan as a role model for social behaviour, but action is tougher than thoughts. Looking forward to the day singapore can become more gracious.

Please bear in mind that Japan is a single race country. They have every reason to be proud of their own country. Same as Taiwan, South Korea. Are you aware that Almost Half the population of Singapore these days are NOT true local born Singaporean. Not saying there are no ugly Singaporeans. Of course there are. The China Town you are at now has become "China's Town" dominated by PRCs. Similarly, Little India. Overwhelmingly not Singapore born Indians. Half of Singapore are filled mainly with people from Mainland China, Mainland India, Bangladesh, The Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia just to name a few. Just to provide you with some Facts.

    • @xuanxuan23

Lim Chye Hock I stay in Chinatown and I can say Chinatown is not dominated by PRCs. There are a lot people working owning a food store at Chinatown but most of the people staying and shop there is still Singaporean. 60% Singaporean 30% other tourist 10%PRCs. You can see more PRCs in Clarke quay compare to Chinatown.

    • @limchyehock6722
      @limchyehock6722 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@xuanxuan23, I respect your opinion. But only 10% PRCs ? I beg to differ. I used to live two bus stops away from China Town and grew up in that area from the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and even up to the 90s. I can see the difference, I can feel the difference, hear the difference, even smell the difference (the food).. Walk around People's Park Complex, People's Park Centre and the adjacent roads around "Gu Chia Chwee". You can't help but bump into a PRC at every turn. PRCs in Clarke Quay in my opinion are mainly tourists. Those plucking eye brows, massaging feet, selling "China's food", etc..etc..some even selling their "services". Just my two cents worth of observations over the years.

You are right. People may seem aloof and selfish at first but when approached most are friendly and kind. Laws are made to keep citizens here in check. When an elderly cut queue , I will just closed one eye but if a youngster were to do that I will kindly voice my opinion. Usually they will apologise when confronted. I feel that this will help to educate the young on social responsibility.

You are quite right in assessing the people and social culture of Singaporeans. In terms of manners, cleanliness and discipline, I think it is hard to beat the Japanese. Singapore still has a long way to go in terms of discipline and cleanliness. As for selfishness, you are also right that not all people here are selfish, some can be caring and generous. One thing unique about Singapore though is many are "kiasu" which I had explained in one of your video, can be a good or bad mentality.

Thanks, I loved the video and I wanted to say that I agree with your observations about Singaporeans, in terms of our levels of civility, civic mindedness and manners. Some Singaporeans are also rather self centered.
As a Singaporean, this used to bother me too. Until I noticed something deeper. I’ve been to other countries I do find the people very polite and well mannered. But couldn’t tell if it came from the bottom of their heart, or if they were conforming to societal expectations. Which is saying something because if someone is genuinely nice, I can tell.
Singaporeans are less well mannered, but I think there is a lot of genuine kindness here. Each time someone is in trouble, everyone will flock out to help, regardless of whether the person in need is a local or not. Just read the news.
Also, if you looked at the numbers, in recent years, donation levels are abt 90% (cash alone) and we donated 2billion sgd. we have no natural disasters.
Just as a comparison, Japanese donation levels are 40% and 9billion sgd. If you consider the latter figure on a per capital basis, you know what I mean.

Hey Ghib love your videos! Here are some things i would say about japan too: during rush hours in tokyo its almost impossible to board a train. You will be pushed and even stepped on. The person won't even look at you and say sorry. Because it became like a norm. But i feel thats double standard - for a country thats supposed to be so polite, why would you do that and not even say 'excuse me' or sorry. Secondly lets not forget about "Chikans".. Japan is probably the only country where molestation rate is so high that separate 'women only' train carts had to be introduced.. and to make the matters worse, most of the victims just secretly gets molested without raising any voice. Such case in singapore is very rare. Thirdly, when an elderly comes in the train or bus, most people give up their seats in Singapore. It never happens in Japan unless its a special seat. You talked about Japan being clean - i used to think that too but If you go to the back ally of Shibiya, Shinjuku, Ebisu you will see how crazy it is. Unlike singapore japan doesn't have any trash bins and they expect everyone to carry their own trash. Well many people (especially young ones) doesn't want to do that, so they trash the street and sidewalks. In singapore you don't see it often. And i dont think people are afraid to get a fine, its just that the trash bins are everywhere. You talked about the weather - Japan isnt always cold ..you have summer and also other pleasant seasons when the temperature is just nice. So there is a variety. In singapore its always summer every day of the year ..if you live here for 10 years you may start to miss winter again. You are right about Conbini and super having good professional service, but then again most frontline staff in Singapore are not really Singaporeans due to pay being low and cost of living being high. In Japan even though there are some foreigners in frontline recently, majority i believe are still Japanese. I feel most Japanese people don't know how to express themselves well, or say no or have a voice of their own. So they cant really speak their mind which is why they are sometimes following rules blindly. I feel its not very good and needs to change. Frankly you have been very nice about Singaporeans in your video. i think the culture here is unique just like how it is in Japan.

Arbor Vitae well what i wrote here is true. Anyone who has lived or travelled to japan knows this. I was not trying to defend singaporeans, I just feel every nation has its good and bad. And knowing japan well i can boldly say that they are not perfect either. I think if i were to make a video about Whats wrong with Singaporeans i would also add that sometimes - Singaporeans are way too critical of themselves. They just have a complaining mentality. No matter how much they have they are not happy. They will say govt is bad, people are bad etc. But if they just look around other nations they should really try to appreciate what they have and also be proud of themselves and their uniqueness. If they start thinking that way everything is going to change.

The Japanese way of thinking is to do what everyone does.
This is not moral. Japanese people care about the evaluations of others, so we are very concerned that "everyone is doing this, but you are not doing it.".
It's not a matter of right and wrong. It's just totalitarianism.
If everyone goes even at the red light, everyone will follow it.
That is "one individual must obey what everyone is doing." It's just self-defense. It is not something that should be praised. (google translate)ありがとう^^

The biggest reason IMO that Singaporeans are rude compared to other countries (especially first world countries) is that we developed way too fast. At the moment we have only 5~6 generations of Singaporeans, it takes a lot more time for certain globalized standards of etiquette to be ingrained into the people. If you noticed, more often than not, the ones that are impolite tend to be older people (just an observation, the younger generations are not perfect but at least more aware of these cues). At the end of the day, I am not defending nor am I criticizing Singaporeans, but I do hope that this would be a slightly different take from the rest.

I worked in a restaurant after school and I was taught the same principles of discipline, don’t eat, talk softly & be very polite in front of customers, the same principles like you just mentioned. When in the 80s, I went to Singapore many times because my relatives lives there, Singaporeans were very friendly, amazing shopping centers & great transportations. But somehow as time goes by, the society, people’s attitudes, technology changes drastically and It seems the disciplinary changed the most. I hate to say that we used to be better but more like I misses the society I used to witness and I am glad I am able to experienced it back then.

I dare say Japanese behavior is something like abnormal in the world. I’d like to say to Japanese people Japanese standard is not world standard, everything is overdoing, shouldn’t impose Japanese morals. I’m convinced better to feel or if possible enjoy local life style. Lastly just in case I’m Japanese😅

I think the social etiquette difference is due to education. For example, in Singapore schools, students are not required to clean their classrooms nor toilets, it is all done by janitors. They then grow up thinking that the clean environment is a given and they don't need to put in any effort. Japan on the other teaches students the responsibilities to maintain cleanliness from young, and it becomes an ingrained mindset.

Great observations. Mostly on point. But you know, “Singaporeans” aren’t the original Singaporeans these days after they started opening up to many foreigners staying here, you have to be a true local to differentiate sometimes. The real Singaporeans are law-abiding, with lots of pride and friendly to foreigners. There has been a successful courtesy campaign in the 1980s and many are better educated and worldly now, as their accumulated wealth has allowed them to see the world more.

5:24 I still can't wrap my head around this mentality. I had lived abroad in countries like Taiwan and observed that locals there actually go all the way to the end of the queue even it it's long. *That* should be the correct way.
Here, Singaporeans simply cut the queues at escalators on a daily basis and I'm not just talking about the older generation. Young adults who I imagine have a better sense of what's right or wrong do that as well. Just go to Tanjong Pagar during peak hours and you'll see what I'm talking about. Please don't tell me people are rushing to work/home, when life in Tokyo is more fast paced and stressful yet locals there are way more civilized than us.
I can only assume that people are doing it because "other people are doing it" but it's unbelievable that Singaporeans have been conditioned to think it's perfectly reasonable to cut queues at escalators.
It amazes me that we pride ourselves as a first-world country yet our manners speak otherwise. I'm sad to say but shame on Singaporeans. As Chan Chun Sing said in the leak audio - Singaporeans are "Xia Suay"

Jyril Wee You mean during peak hours only Singaporeans rush to go home. What about the thousands and thousands of FTs, PRs? You mean only Singaporeans are the only ones hoarding masks, toilet rolls, essentials. Please use the term "people living in Singapore", not only Singaporeans. Be fair and factual.

@@limchyehock6722 Lmao. I'm a Singaporean and I know damn well when I meet a Singaporean.
Changing the term to "people living in Singapore" does not change the fact that Singaporeans still cut queues at escalators which is an ugly behaviour, which is my point all along.
Also, why bring up the hoarding of masks, toilet rolls and essentials? I don't recall actually bringing that up.
But since you had to bring it up, what's even pathetic was the day DORSCON was raised to orange. I saw Singaporean aunties at the supermarket panic-buying but hey, that's not all. There were those who thought the queue was too long and proceeded to leave their baskets of goods ON THE FLOOR, before leaving the premise. I'm talking about products meant to be refrigerated or frozen.
I know a Singaporean auntie when I see one so cut the BS about foreigners.

about the MRT etiquette part, i feel that those that give way to alighting passengers before getting on the train are the young people. Usually those that rush in without giving way are the Ojisans and Obasans. There are several incidents that when i was in the train, witnessing Ojisans/Obasans getting caught in between the MRT station and train doors because they rush in while the door is closing. Younger people are more chill, they will wait for the next train.
