  • This is a video I wish I had before I converted my van myself. This video is all about Subaru conversions in Vanagons and what it takes. I've been driving my converted van for a couple years now and its an absolute blast to drive. I used the Rocky Mountain Westy Subaru conversion kit which is super nice and very complete. It takes some work to get done but its totally worth it and id never go back!! I think this is a good video that covers a good amount of info on the whole process, id love to hear anyones feedback on their conversion and how its holding up!! Any questions please ask!!!

    In South Africa, we produced these Volkswagen Microbuses (Vanagons) locally since the 60's. Volkswagen South Africa therefore, in a quest for more power, replaced the 2.1i (last of the VW boxer motors) with the AUDI 2.5L 5 cylinder motor - it's the Quattro 2.1/2.2 5cylinder bored out to 2.5 liters naturally aspirated that pushed the output from 85kw to 100kw - these were super tough and reliable and could easily do 160km/h! Drove lots of them - awesome long distance cars.

      @@PostPros : if you want me to send you some pictures and more information, you're welcome - our 5 cylinder busses ended up with quite a few engine sizes ranging from 2.3 liters (in the basic Kombi) to 2.6 liters in the Caravelle (the highest luxury spec with standard A/C, power windows, power steering, power mirrors and power door locks). The AUDI motors were RELIABLE and could easily accomplish 250k to 400 000kms with some owners recording as high as 850 000kms. Volkswagen South Africa never, UNFORTUNATELY, fitted these AUDI motors with a Turbo - I can just imagine seeing a VW BUS going past you at 200km/h like an AUDI QUATTRO! The stuff of legends! Ánd the sound of these motors were AWESOME! Now we have, like the rest of the World, the new T6.1 in diesel only 🙄🤦‍♂️

    Thank you very much for taking the time to put this video together. It's the best conversion video I've seen. We purchased our '88 West 4yrs ago and shortly after purchased an EJ25 and complete Small Engine kit from a shop that had planned to install it but sold the van before they could complete the swap. Our stock 2.1L engine has been running so well that I've been nervous about doing the swap, having never done anything like this before. This video's given me the confidence to give it a go. Thanks man and safe travels!

    Never heard so much praise for the Wasserboxer. My '85's had a GoWesty 2300cc and the air flow meter caused the worst nightmares I've experienced in a car. Traveling from CA to WI (never made it), it died repeatedly at elevation and even when it wasn't dying, I would get the dreaded "highway hiccups". You can get rebuilt AFMs, but the Digifant system is not good and if you break down in the middle of nowhere (as I did), good luck finding anyone who will touch a Wasserboxer, much less knows how to work on them. And since there's no OBD, you're pretty screwed unless the mechanic is familiar with them.
    I agree that if you're just driving around town and within a few hours of older VW mechanics, the Wasserboxers are fine. Can't agree that they're good for cross-country trips based on my miserable experience. I swapped the GW 2300cc for a Subaru 2.2 and it's better in every way. Expensive, but I literally can't imagine doing cross-country travel in a Wasserboxer-powered Vanagon anymore. Maybe with the Digifant ditched for GW's replacement, but if you're going to spend that much on overhauling everything, why not just a reliable, modern motor with OBD?

    Vanagon and Syncro…best car ever made!!! Except for reliability, power and torque, reliability, stability in cross winds, reliable windshield wipers in heavy rain and snow, and needing another car available to make your transportation ecosystem complete!! Shoulda been called the Van-Agony!! Ha! Even so, Vanagon still the best…just fix all those issues and you’re good to go. Expect at least a 40k investment to start with and you will be delighted!!! I miss my Syncros!!! By the way, there is also a comprehensive Ford Z-tech engine conversion from Bostig Engineering in the Boston area. If you’re looking for a conversion option look into Bostig as one of your possible choices. Fits fantastically.

  • @thomasfx3190
    @thomasfx3190 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Great comments! I have to disagree with you a bit though, the 84’ and later wasserboxer just didn’t age well. Much of the issue was galvanic corrosion between the iron cylinders & the aluminum alloy heads. I’ve seen them blow out the the water jacket going up I-5 in Tacoma. The ‘79 -‘83 air cooled T2 motor can run a long time though.

    I have an '88 with 365k miles on it. The first engine overheated (bad radiator) at 325k miles. I fried it good. The half ass shop I took it to tried to change the oil but forgot to put oil in it. And the guy is out test driving it around. No coolant system. Imbecile. I was able to drive it off the lot. The engine would not die. I ended up replacing it with a rebuilt 2.1 which runs fabulous. The cost with a new radiator, thermostat housing, etc, was $8k.

    KEnnedy Engineering Products (KEP) I think made the first conversion parts for subaru engines. I made the mistake of buying the odd duck single port exhaust 2.2 L and had to get custom exhaust made. I think Small Cars kit would have worked but I had already bolted in the engine. Lesson learned is to ask the conversion company first. Going on 8 years with only minor issues.

    Excellent video and excellent job. I bought a second subaru air filter box and then, went with a mustang GT air filter and filter housing. ... ditto on wiring harness (pay, plug and play) is one thing I would do differently. Is the reverse coolant just to delete running the coolant hose along the back ? I also regret not getting the kit.....Rocky Mountain has been very helpful...

    • @PostPros
      @PostPros  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah reverse coolant manifold just shoots the barb out pointing toward the front vs plumbing the coolant around the engine. Works great🎉

      @@PostPros I just noticed that at the rear of the reversed manifold, there is like a 1/2" fitting, I had assumed that was welded shut ? I'll go back and look at your video. Next topic, 5 speed, The shifter linkage that you had to make mods to, do you think you could made it from instructions (pdf). I found instructions, and Subarugears said don't over think it... Thanks

  • @jeffwatkins9495
    @jeffwatkins9495 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great video. I saw you mentioned that you got your engine on eBay. I read on smallcar.com that they recommend the harness comes from the same engine. What did you do for the harness and the other misc items you need?

    • @PostPros
      @PostPros  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Jeff Watkins well I had an engine in there already but it was a phase 2 2,2 engine(rare) and had a single port header with an unknown amount of miles(dual port is WAY more common, that’s why I’d recommend going with dual). I bought an engine off eBay (ej20) with low miles and with the Subaru’s as long as it’s the same phase (phase 1=pre 2000? or 2 after 2000? (Somewhere around there), the intake manifolds will fit as long as it’s the same “phase”. The intake manifold needs to be kept with the same injection because of the injectors, throttle body’s, idle control...exc. So keep your fuel injection/harness matched with your intake manifold and all the sensors on it. And you can put that on any engine. The ecu will not know the difference and since it has the right sensors it will run perfect. Basically you’d be replacing the engine and heads, the shortblock. Even if it’s 2,2, 2,0, 2,5 it’ll run it and compensate. I have 2,5 injection running a 2,0L and it’s good, I’ve also put 2,5 lower end on a 2,2 setup and with the 2,2 heads and fuel injection and it’s daily driven, runs great!! It’s not ideal but it’s just fine, definitely better to keep everything 100%. But your engine/ecu doesn’t know the difference and since the intakes fit every engine (same phase) it’s easy to do!! If your doing an engine swap I’d recommend phase 2 2,5 engine. They’re all dual port and VERY common (for the future, we’ll have engines/parts for YEARS), their the newest, most power. The ej253 or later is the best. The old phase 1 2,2 engines are real good but they’re getting old and your stuck with phase 1 engine, single port too so your real stuck if you ever want to switch back and forth. Hopefully this answers your question🤙. Thanks for watching!!🎉

    • @PostPros
      @PostPros  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      So honestly the coolant is something I really haven’t paid too much attention to. Just followed what was said to do and went with it. For the most part I can tell the water pump goes to one pipe up to the rad and comes back to the coolant manifold on top of the heads.. that was enough for me and seemed like it would work when I set it up and haven’t had problems.. is your radiator good? People say they get clogged up and old, I’ve thought about replacing mine but never have, just a thought? Also have you bled your radiator of air, sometimes their hard to do and you need to raise the front of your van on a hill, then crack the bleeder on the rad until coolant comes out, while filling the coolant at the same time obviously..

    You did not mention having to run any coolant lines forward. So I am presuming that this is an 83 or later Vanagon? I know earlier air cooled models can be converted. I have seen Type 1, 2, and 3 conversions. Does this company also sell kits with water lines and radiators for earlier models? I always thought this was the cleanest conversion. You did a great job. So 2 questions....
    1. Did you have to fabricate any parts to complete your conversion, or did everything come in the kit and it all just fit together?
    2. I’ve seen written articles that specify certain ages of Subaru that work, and year ranges to avoid, but they all seem contradictory. What is the newest year you know will work?

    • @PostPros
      @PostPros  4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      So the Rocky Mountain Westy kit that I got (others as well) was VERY complete and honestly other than basic household tools and skills I didn't have to do any custom fabricating, everything bolts together.
      So the newest year that will work?? Any EJ engine will work, they range from like 1991 to about 2012 which is when they started phasing them out. I think the best years to use would be a EJ25 from about 2002 to 2004-5?(phase 2).. Right in there somewhere. Its not new enough to have throttle by wire so you don't have to worry about crazy electronics, or can bus stuff, and its not too old to have to worry about parts or hard to find engines/old wires falling apart..exc. Also that's probably the best and easiest fuel injection to work with, get a hold of, and you can actually scan it.. The engines are EVERYWHERE too. Some people like the older phase 1 EJ22's and say theyre the best but the problem is finding one that's nice and low mile.
      If you get phase 1 engine/fuel injection (1990-1999) you have to stick with engines within that year, phase 2 started around 2000 and up so you'll have to stick with the newer engines because the intake manifolds are different bolt patterns and cant swap them between the different phases. Which separates the compatibility between the 2. Your fuel injection is what decides, which is why I say go with the newer. When you need an engine they'll be what's around(phase2). Either way they all last a very long time. You'll get different answers from different people, but that's what I think!!!
      Thanks for watching!!!

    A few questions: first, bought a 2002 Subaru Imprezza engine, either rebuilt from Subaru or from a junkyard. Cost? Then, you bought a Rocky Mtn Westy conversion kit for 3k. Then, a few extras like Subaru air filter, dash gauges, rear dipstick tube, etc. Cost? How much horsepower from Imprezza engine, and is there ground clearance for a Class III trailer hitch? I'm looking at a Westfalia, at present, and want to tow an Alberg 30-ft sailboat around US and Canada...Time and total cost for everything, please...

    • @PostPros
      @PostPros  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think a VW bus is going to do what you want it to based off the questions you ask. This is not a vehicle you tow a 30ft sailboat around North America with. Have a look at what an Impreza can tow, since that’s the engine used. It’s not too much at all, maybe a ton? It’s essentially a little car.
      With the money you would spend on a bus to get it to do that, you might as well get a newer truck that’s designed to tow, and also will not give you problems..exc.
      I pulled 2 Seadoos and a trailer over the summer, maybe 2000lbs. That’s the MOST I’d want to tow. It was jerking me all over the place and I needed more power. Also with the engine/trans in the back it gets drenched while unloading the boat, every once in a while is fine, but I’m not a fan of repeatedly doing that.
      I’m sorry, I know you want a VW to travel with and pull your boat, but I don’t think it’s the right vehicle. You need something big, big truck, suv or something with an 8cyl with a big towing capacity for that job.
      I say all this in the nicest way possible🎉
      Unless you are VERY skilled and can do all the work yourself. It going to cost you $30,000+, minimum you need an H6 with a WRX 5speed and a massive custom hitch, you would still be struggling. Any more questions please ask!!
      Thanks for watching🎉, good luck with your travels🤙

    The thing I hate about this Subaru engine is that it's an interference engine timed with a rubber band. Have seen many ruined when the band slips and the valves hit the pistons. Even a couple hundred miles after the required scheduled replacement. In my opinion, an engineering error probably ordered by accountants.

    • @PostPros
      @PostPros  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Van's Tech Corral if you replace with quality idlers, tensioners, and belts and not a Chinese kit it will last until the next interval just like the other millions on the road. I agree it is a mess and intimidating. If you don’t replace it on time you’re playing with fire and the cog idler bearings will fail. But the timing belt is nothing to be concerned about!!🏁🏁

    • @vanstechcorral
      @vanstechcorral 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PostPros It would have been better to use gears or at least a chain. For an interference engine, it was a stupid cost cutting measure, or even intentional to create the need for an expensive service regularly. For you and me, if we change it and nothing odd has happened, it's almost just our labor. For millions of others, it's a major bill that wouldn't be a regular high expense. However, I have seen stock Subarus that have had a new belt fail during overheating, ruining the engine. As you know, the stock waterboxer's cam is gear driven. Even Subaru is now going to chains.

    • @PostPros
      @PostPros  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Van's Tech Corral gears would be better and more reliable. They’d be loud. Chains are definitely better as far as longevity/reliable. Did they do it for the $$$. Maybe?? That’s fine with me honestly, they wouldn’t be in business if they’re cars lasted forever. Let’s not forget about all the other engines that use a belt too and not target Subaru’s. Either way to have an over head cammed boxer you need something to drive the cams. I’m not mad about a belt or the design, but I’ve never had or known anyone with a problem with them either. I think people see the belt setup and think it’s going to break based on how it looks. I’d take the timing belt over pushrods. I’ll take the smooth spinning belt vs pushrods bouncing around and lifters clattering. But that’s just me!! Put a Porsche in, they’re chain driven!!! Honestly mostly every engine is a good running engine, ppl just target (me as well) brands and designs. As long as we have something we like it’s all good🤙🏁

    • @vanstechcorral
      @vanstechcorral 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PostPros I'm just speaking as a mechanic by what I encounter. I have no brand loyalty. Think of those Ford Triton engines that spit out sparkplugs due to design. I haven't had experience with Subaru engines outside stock Subarus. You are correct about other engines using the same sort of setup. All of them have increased failure rates, and interference engine failures due to belt issues are generally fatal to the entire engine. One particularly unfortunate circumstance where a belt that had been recently installed by a Subaru dealer and it failed became a warranty replacement, but with many other charges amounting to the cost of the engine tacked on. Nevertheless, you are correct, many well off people don't see this as a big problem, but they may start to as the economy crumbles. There are now engine designs out there where repair requires that the entire engine now be removed. It was cheaper to manufacture that way, but the required maintenance at some point will exceed the value of the vehicle, resulting in a final trip to the wrecking yard. I commend you on your excellent and well-thought out conversion which I am sure will continue to serve you well.

    • @vanstechcorral
      @vanstechcorral 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PostPros I can't fault the Subie conversions because without them I wouldn't have an engine! I was given an 84 Westfalia in 2012 because the family that had it dropped a valve and the piston rod went through one of the case halves. I didn't do anything with it until 2017, when I was given a motor for $100 from a guy doing a Subaru swap, then another fresh engine that had caught fire, along with 4 Mercedes wheels and Michelin tires. It's been a daily driver for the last couple of years and only a few hundred was spent in all including the van. Due to health and financial situation that's what I had to do.
