Wow! Outstanding!! I could no more do what Charlie Porter does than fly. But Charlie's method of teaching really is good. I'm almost 90 so I can only play like Charlie in my dreams.

Blue Mitchell quotes this lick on the Spinning Wheel solo on the Jimmy McGriff Electric Funk record.

Fantastic video. Really found this fascinating, even though I'm not a trumpet player. Thank you for helping us to understand and appreciate your craft. Those who are good at their game are generous with their knowledge.

I've ALWAYS wanted to learn this lick. Thanks so much. I didn't realize there was so much repeated of the same note like in the first part of the bar. Dizzy really truly is a hero of mine.

Smokin! This lick was shown to me at Berklee in '88 by George Zonce. I wrote it down,
but lost it. I've tried to figure it out, but couldn't. Thank You for sharing Charlie! I also want to thank you for all of your videos, and for turning me on to Willie(Jazz Everyone).
Fantastic! I greatly appreciate everything! :)

I spent years try to figure that one out!!
    Thanks Charlie!!
What threw me off was the alternate fingering and the fact the the E with first and second value don't sound the same. I knew there was a false fingering in it but couldnt pick whether it was the D with 1 and 3 or the E.
Then tried it with an Eb before the E to make the rhythm/ note count right with.
It's the weird slight pitch difference of the E open and E 1 and 2 and the triplet count that does it!
    Thanks SO MUCH!!

    This is GRRRREAT!!!!
I probably listened to this break before you were born, Charlie, and now you show me how he did it!!
    I am impressed!
I actually think he stole it from Roy Eldridge - whom he used to copy. Listening to the old records it could be hard to tell who was who... Roy often used a cup and Diz the harmon.
Thank you very much for this, young man!
Best wishes from Petter, oldie from Norway

Awesome! I always knew it was an alternate fingering thing. Thanks for showing us how! I've caught Oscar Peterson playing this too. I wonder who came up with it first.

I normally don't rely on pre programmed licks per say in my jazz playing, but something like this I'd love to add.
