- Merlin is so strong, I love it.
In this Guide, we're exploring SMITE Mage Merlin, in mid, jungle and solo. We'll be going through his abilities, combos, counters, builds, what not to do, attack cancelling and general combat tips. This will be from a Conquest perspective mainly but don't worry, you can easily implement this guide into other game modes as well.

Important things to know:
1) overload procs item effects which includes soul gem, gem of isolation and spear of the Magus.
2) since passive procs things like spear of Magus, this means that you can proc spear of the Magus on towers.
3) arcane is the lowest base and scaling damage (510+200%), Fire has the highest scaling (665+510%) and ice has the highest base damage (824+244%).
4) due to this, ice and fire are the ones you will mostly want to use for fights if you are looking to deal damage for fights.
5) remember that your frost ult will slow so changing to it will give you a slow for frostblolt so use that first in the stance
6) there is a small time in the ult when you will not be able to cast. It's a small time but be careful. You cannot instantly start casting as soon as the buttons change.
For those interested in what you want to level for level 1 you can have a look here. Use the L slider to change the ability level and have a play. X is your magical power and Y is your damage. It's very interesting to see just how the damage works.

Most of the time, people wouldn't even get up to that point. However, there isn't really an item I can substitute for Boots as anything after your 5th item+ is just super situational.

Despite the fact that obviously Gem of Isolation isn't nearly as good on Merlin anymore (and the whole build part is a little outdated thanks to Hi-red's massive item changes since then) and that I would definitely like to discuss the usefulness of fire/arcane stances with you, this was still great to listen to, had LOADS of solid tips and tricks that are still really relevant and the fact that the whole guide was so well laid out, categorised and concisely explained does wonders for the video.

I always use arcane when I’m engaging, most of the time I don’t even have to change to my other stances because I one shot
Arcane is easily the best for solo...you can hit the tiki from across the fuccin map
I personally don’t ever use that’s stance I always start in ice and switch to fire it puts out the most damage in my opinion
so you want to go 30 and 9 in a 20 minute conquest match

I think a dr.strange skin would be ideal for Merlin.

Tbh, Olorun feels more like Strange to me. While Merlin feels like John Constantine.

As a a squishy mage you want to avoid contact with enemies in close range, that makes fire stance almost useless (for fights). Fire stance is really good for securing objectives like gold fury, fire giant etc. So playing frost stance as a main stance for good long range poke and finishing enemies with 1 and 2 combo on arcane stance is the safest way to play Merlin. You literally can two-shot enemy's adc or mid with 1-2 combo in arcane stance late game(at least in other game modes). Only use fire stance in fights when some enemy is already close to you and have low HP to finish him with your 1st ability. GL HF wizards :D
i want to add my combo i think is quite handy this only if you want to be aggresive and secure the kill
start in ice use your 2 then 1 then use your 3 to get close use your ult swap to fire use your 2 then your 1 you also prop want to use aegis after this combo and then your 3 to get away XD. learnt a lot thx for all those guides love to so more :D

tip if you are in the ice stance and you want to be in the fire stance immediately press ur ult and while you are doing the animation press 2 so that you can switch to fire stance without having to be in arcane stance this also works in other stances also yu can use arcane to deal damage from a distance
Merlins escape potential is awesome when escaping always go to aracne stance and drop ur 2 on the ground qhere you stand if they are hot on ur trail this will buy you enought time for flicker to come up again
I use is Arcane stance to get them low then hurry up and switch to fire to finish them off
That's what I do personally. Especially early game I use arcane and fire the most because I see it as having a faster minion clear and higher damage output

In my opinion Arcane is really underrated. I use it a lot more then fire stance.
After 4 months of maining him, my preference of stances go from Ice->Arcane->Fire.
Also Gem of Isolation is a crutch item on him I think, there are way better items for him to get other than that

In general,
Arcane stance - great for poke and long range damage.
Fire stance - best for objectives and close range burst
Ice stance - great for team fights and overall damage
I know you don't have many God's yet in this series but I loved every single video it helps me play characters a little more cleanly and or tells me a few things I didn't know about each God. If I had one request it would be if you could please do one on Awilix? I like the concept of the character alot but me as a whole playing any assassin isn't so good and I never do well with her. Anyways keep these coming they are very good for people trying to learn a new God or hone their skills. :)

This is how I have the most success playing Merlin:
Generally, I stick to ice stance. His 2 + 1 ice combo has great clear and insane damage, especially once you get Spear of the Magus and Gem of Isolation online. I can usually handle *most* 1v1 fights by going between ice and arcane or vice versa.
The only time I switch to fire stance in battle is if my team has really good CC and lockdown already covered - think Kumbhakarna. That said, fire stance is definitely the way to go for objectives.
I think you may have undervalued arcane stance just a little bit. Try this trick: send out your 1, and once it hits an enemy and you see them trying to escape the damage radius, throw your 2 on them. They'll take damage from the initial cast, and then get sucked right back in when they try to move out of it. You can bait out their beads and set them up for the kill with a stance switch. 😁
Haha, sorry if i came off like I undervalued the Arcane stance, I value it, but only in certain situations, I usually just use Arcane if I have no way to secure my fire stance abilities, I love the insane damage fire stance deals and finishes most enemies who are getting away from the tick damage ^_^
As I said in the end, it just comes down to each individuals play style!

@@xfatoushe-6908 ehh you gotta remember that Arachne is hella squishy, especially if you went with a full damage build. You can usually burst her down pretty quickly.

Arcane is amazing for sieging wether you’re attacking or defending, your 1 is just so huge and if you hit people with it, it always does a spooky chunk of damage

Honestly, I more play as a prospecting Merlin, using Arcane and Ice for pretty much all my engagements, and Fire for close quarters. While this most often doesn't net me a lot of kills or damage, it does net me a lot of safety.
Merlin's kit is flexible enough to allow you to switch your playstyle, from safe to risky, at literally the press of a button. While I stay in Ice the most, Arcane's 1 is good for area denial, has decent damage, and if you can pull off the Arcane combo, can lead to you switching stance to either Ice or Fire to do more damage. As for Fire, as I said, I personally use it to counter over-zealous enemies who come at me. Its protection shredding and rapid damage dealing nature makes it quite lethal against most his enemies. Ice, on the other hand, is just godlike. Considering the range of the Ice combo, you get some pretty good damage.
Finally, his Flicker. I think its incredible. It has a long CD and it's short, sure. It's also instantaneous, though. Flickering behind a wall is a good way to escape enemies that used their own movement to come to you, it can be useful to dodge around enemies and their abilities, it has such a potential for mind games. Most enemies will be surprised if you Flicker behind them, and for Hunters, it can really throw off their aim.
But ofc, Flicker won't save you. Rushing in with Merlin is a very bad idea. Play Merlin smartly, try to predict what your enemy is doing and where they're gonna be going. You have the perfect kit for shutting down a attack, not just cus of your damage, but because the enemy will be discouraged to do so. I mean, would you try and kill Doctor Strange while a black hole and a blizzard is happening around you?

Leveling ult also affects cooldown now. Don't know if this was always the case.
i find that with merlin that the arcane stance is good in a chase. use 1 to bait running enmys and then 2 to put them back in the 1 and combo with 4 if posible to frost for a slow

Using gem of isolation means his 1 in frost stance always procs the extra damage.

Instead of leveling the 2 for clear you can also just level the 1 and clear with arcane. I find I do better in early/mid game if I do this because the 1s are better to damage gods so I can clear and poke well.

The explanation is perfect but i still find this hero a very hard hero to master if you were new to him because there are billions of choices to choose when you engage on a fight 🙃 also this hero needs a lot of time and practice so be patient even if you suck at the first few games

i prefer ice stance for jungling with its aoe dmg and dmg bonus from slows + ice stance has the lowest cooldowns of all stances. My favorite combo is starting in arcane 1+2 then flicker in and ult Into fire for multiple enemies or ice for 1 and hit you 2+1 again

Arcane combo, switch to fire stance, put trap and then use flamethrower ability. I PROMISE you that this will melt any enemy to barely any health. merlin’s combos are OP
also, i don’t know if updates have changed anything, but i get most of my damage from arcane stance, then fire. ice stance i always leave for ranged attack. also, can you choose which stance to change to? i thought it was an order

Arcane/fire for team fight and ice for solo fights and clear
Fire and Ice are good in the early game and Arcane is the worst stance in the early game. But imo Arcane is the strongest once you have your items and are fed
I want everyone to know if there is an ability like baron samedi’s heal ability if Merlin teleports at the wrong time, he will be hit by the ability,waste his mana, and it will be in cooldown. Be wary of those type of abilities it can be very annoying😎

Arcane stance is useless, the pull on the 2 is avoidable easy and the 1 has the longest CD of the 3 stances.
Ice 1 shortest CD followed by Fire 1. Fire best to start if new since how the 1 works allows some damage while missing with Ice 1 loses all.
Merlin needs some tweaking badly.
