Alton Towers' dark boat ride opened in 1981 as 'Around the World in 80 days', taking influence from Disney's 'Its A Small World'. In 1993 the ride was re-themed as 'Toyland Tours', a tour through a Toy Factory with various giant-sized animatronic toys.
In 2006 the ride was given a £7M overhaul under license from author Roald Dahl's estate as 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory', taking inspiration from the original illustrations for the book by Quentin Blake.
Guests are shown a pre-ride video, before taking a boat ride through the factory, with various scenes depicting the mis-adventures of naughty children! A second pre-ride video is shown after the boat ride, while guests wait for a ride in Willy Wonka's 'glass elevator' - a 360° simulator, in which movements are fairly gentle as guests remain standing.
Video includes pre-ride videos from the queues, a POV of the boat ride, and POV of the glass elevator simulator.

I have to ask out of curiosity. Why did they not think to have a little sweets shop upon exiting the ride? They could've easily made it like the sweets shop in the movie or story and sold themed sweets in it. Even those who didn't ride the ride would've been drawn in to buy sweets to snack on in the park or take home from their visit. Merlin missed a major money making opportunity there on that deal. 🤔🤔
Most definitely! There even used to be the chocolate house right outside it, which was removed??!! lol
I believe there are rights issues with the sweets/chocolate used in the book which is why there was never a shop selling Wonka confectionary.
@@matgostyles653 There used to be Wonka brand Nerds, Laffy Taffy, SweetTarts, Runts, Fun Dip, Bottle Caps, and other things, but Nestlè removed the Wonka name for some reason. It just doesn't feel the same buying them now.

Cillit bang there WAS a golden ticket competition when the 2005 film was out. I remember in the UK and Ireland they would sell wonky bars

I remember the elevator ride. All the children (including me I was 7) was screaming and crying hysterically

This looks like such a lovely ride. Perfect for families. I love the way they've designed it it's fantastic and very creative. I would have happily gone on this. It's a shame they got rid of it.

I went on it when I was like 7 and the elevator part is terrifying. Every kid was screaming and crying hysterically (including me). It was kinda like the actual movie and the elevator floor moved around and bumped up and down (intended) there was railings to hold on to though

I do miss this ride! It was one of the reasons why I loved coming to Alton towers. Going this Tuesday can’t wait but won’t be the same without this ride

I actually found this ride a bit scary the last time i went on it lol especially the sound effects😂🥴its such a shame that its gone now.I was going to go to alton towers for my bday this year but then i realised that the ride wasnt there so it was pointless lol.It was the only ride ,in my case, that we didn’t have to wait long for

As much as I like the Toyland Tours ride, I have to admit the cutscenes of the ride look pretty cool. They look if a Willy Wonka cg animated movie ever exist.

They should make a ride based entirely off of the terrifying boat ride scene from the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and it should be at Halloween Horror Nights.
That would involve getting the movie rights as well as the book rights, whereas this only had book rights which were expensive enough unfortunately.

I went on it once and I loved it, especially the little animations. Why couldn't the Tim Burton film be in that kind of style, you know, make it stop-motion-animated.
I think the classic version of the film is my favourite, and any attraction of the same theme would be best modelled from that.

I don't really care that it closed. When I was on the ride, it reminded me of how the ride replaced Toyland tours the ride that had a sonic the hedgehog attraction. I was heartbroken when I got reminded. So I kinda don't care it closed.

Years before it became Charlie (consider late 1990s but no later than 2000), I had a recurring dream about a room where all 6 sides had a screen. I would be inside the room and play it as a virtual reality machine. I was nicely surprised when I boarded the Charlie elevator for the first time in 2007. The only thing missing was the floor, so that it had 5 of the 6 screens from my dreams.

That would work with 1 or 2 people, but somewhere where passenger capacity is an issue, the room would be crowded and you would't see much floor!
The que for that ride takes ages! Took me and my family about an hour and a half waiting to go on it.

I rode this in 2010. I didn't return to the park until 2018. 8 years later and the ride's gone :(

This entire theme park is really "dark"...everything seems so spooky. Replaced by dungeons doesn't help.

I can see here that they probably either took some stuff out of both films not to mention one of them tim burten probably followedish by the book I've been noticing and it also had some of the old movie 2 for instance the boat ride Gene Wilder's famous creepy scene
I never went on this but it's sad to see unique and creative dark rides close down for good. I'm still not over losing Curse of Darkastle here in the US.
In honesty... this was never the finest of dark rides! lol It was better as 'Toyland Tours', and as it's original 'Around the World in 80 Days' it was Alton's version of 'It's A Small World'. And I think while everyone knows both the films, very few know the original illustrations this was based on... especially it's young target audience.
And I/we can relate to your loss. Here in the UK we've lost a lot of parks and classic rides in recent years. All replaced by shopping malls and virtual attractions! lol
The curse of darkcastle was so good and so well themed but it looks like theyre following the same story for darkcoaster

Well, it was never Alton's best dark ride... although the ride hardware is all still there, am sure we'll see a future attraction incorporating them... possibly/probably another Merlin park!

Hi Ian. The ride was themed on Quentin Blake's artwork from the book, with sadly no reference to the any of the movies.

it's a great ride , but I'd make some adjustments :
-The boat should be a pink boat with a seahorse on the front.
-The scene where Veruca Salt falls down the Rubbish Chute COULD be improved
-We can't really hear The ompa Lompas Songs.

You know, if there's ever a third film adaptation of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory, it could be a computer-animated film with a stop-motion aesthetic like The Peanuts Movie or Into The Spider-Verse.
They had a Tom and Jerry adaptation of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. That counts as a third one, as well as an animated retelling of the 1971 movie ..

I still hate the fact this replaced toy land torus. Like that ride was so much more creative and fun this one felt like it was over way too fast and the videos looked dated when it was new. I did enjoy the elevator bit though but it did kinda feel like the boat part of the ride was cut alot shorter just to have that bit.

Being honest with you Kayla, it was pretty disappointing! As you can see the facade was 2-dimentional! There were a lot of 'dead' parts during the slow boat ride, none of it was particularly impressive! The simulator was more of a 'wobble' than anything realistic or synchronised with the... fairly basic graphics! Complete missed opportunity not exiting through a candy shop, meh, it was rubbish!
