Basically, various nintendo things had bar codes on them (including pokemon cards), and you scanned the cards to play minigames or some other nonsense. The most insultingly major thing was the GBA port of Mario Bros. 3 had a ton of new levels, but they were all locked behind the e-reader for unlocking them. Only so many of the cards even made it to the US, too, so not many levels were seen unless hacking was involved. In short, it's a failed moneymaking scheme nintendo had back in the gamecube/gba era. Mostly from no one really know where the heck you could get an e-reader, even though you could find the cards everywhere. Bonus fact: Mario Bros. 3 cards also unlocked Mario Bros. 2 veggies in levels, as well as Mario World cape feathers.
