I read Minor detail this month too and it is so so good! Shibli excellently describes the horrors and struggle of living under occupation that you can’t really understand without living under it! I think my favorite read from this month was footnotes in Gaza.
I also read minor detail this month, I read it in Arabic the original language. It was the best book I've read this month. It's unfortunate that they canceled the Frankfurt Book Fair event, but Shibli's writing is incredible!
I read The Prophet and The Name of the Rose in October and they both blew me away, so excited to read more Gibran and Eco 🍂 (and Wuthering Heights was also fantastic)
I ordered and now currently reading The undertaking of Hart and Mercy the day I saw your blog of it.. im really liking it so far, only 40 pages in.. I really needed a book to have a good time with after being in a 2 year reading slump.

October was an intersting month for me because it was my first month at uni! i felt like i needed to share this with you because your beautiful videos have always made me happy and helped me in my hard days during high school and now i'm studying pharmacy which was my a dream 💙 i read anne of the island and loved it (it was about anne going to uni too), i loved the second book of before the coffee gets cold series it was so cozy, and i read poirot last case by agatha christie and loved it too
Wuthering Heights is one of my favorite classics ever. And now I’m so happy that someone finally gave justice to explaining the summary because it’s definitely not a romance novel. It’s a heart shattering experience. Everyone must read it tho ❤️🩹😁
my favorite book from october was the master and margarita !!! i paused in the middle to read goethe’s faust because bulgakov was constantly referencing it and i wanted a fuller understanding but i think it wouldve still been great without that extra context :P

I'm currently reading Snow Falling on Cedars for a class and god! What a wonderful read! Definitely teaching me a lot about American history, about reading, about myself in general. And it's the perfect book for this cold weather, very gloomy and slow and wintery... Definitely pick it up if you haven't already!
My favourite books of october were Emma by Jane Austen and Moonminpappa at sea by Tove Jansson ^^ Also Emma, I have to thank you once again for recommending Heaven and Hell, I loved it, have it now in four translations, and also, since I'm doing Scandinavian studies I suggested to my Icelandic teacher that we could read it in class, and she actually agreed! Now she ordered it in Icelandic and we're reading it together in class, the language is just so amazing in the original and I love seeing my colleagues' reaction to it, so thank you again for bringing me this joy (and in consequence also the 10 people in my course)!

I’m hoping to go to Haworth tomorrow, where the Brontes lived. I’m only about 30mins away but somehow never visited. I nearly went in the summer, but I’m glad I didn’t. It’s breezy, wild and it’s raining on and off. It seems perfect for a visit now 😁
Fave book from October was I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy. Honestly didn't expect it to be so well written and such a quick and easy, even fun read, while dealing with such heavy and disturbing topics. The book is really well done and does a great job in explaining hard things in a digestable way, while not making them any less hard.
I commented that because of you I'd read Phantom of the Opera in October and i did! I spent most of the month reading Priory and i became too busy w school, but with an audiobook i was able to finish it in October and had so much fun :) It's been in my physical tbr for Years so thank you for convincing me to finally pick it up!
My favourite book that I read in October wasn't even a book but a fanfic called Anatomy of a Fall. i really loved it because the two main characters were a high school kid and a ghost and it took part largely in a forest in autumn so it was just perfect for this time of year and the atmosphere was amazing!🍂
Thank you Emma. I did see your GoT show the other day and you'll be glad to know that it went well. I, for one, enjoy getting together with some of the others every now and again. Your show (you and Carolyn) helps to make that possible, so thanks for that. October was a difficult month for me reading wise, as I had to prepare for an exam - an experience which with certainly you can sympathize. However, that done I've started on the Nabokov translation of Eugene Onegin, which I'm enjoying a lot. The famous tri-lingual author is taking me, the reader, on a guided tour of the process of translating a difficult poem, as only a great master can do.
i definitely recommend earthlings if you’d like a very disturbing book (check the trigger warnings before tho!) it’s really well done and very shocking too. i found myself thinking about it a looot

Thanks for reading and recommending Minor Detail 🇵🇸 For horror, I think you would enjoy The Saga of Darren Shan! I read it many years ago (it's YA) but I think the graphic horror in it really contributed to the plot and atmosphere and left me with so much to think about!
Hi Emma, I think you would truly enjoy "The Thief Lord" by Cornelia Funke. It takes place in Venice, portrays lovely characters and has a surreal touch. It's a childhood favourite of many Germans and after rereading it recently I believe it to be a cozy read for adults too. 😊 Thanks so much for the effort and love you put into your videos!! They always lift my mood💕

Got a cold and sore throat at the moment so this was a nice one to just sit with...my favourite book from september october is probably either Godkiller by Hannah Kaner or The trees grew because i bled there by Eric LaRocca (read triggerwarnings) they were both amazingly done and i am looking forward to the second book (sunbringer) frok the trilogy!
"Wuthering Heights" is just astonishing. Who was it written for? No attempt made to placate the reader. Completely uncompromising. What a vision. The two takeaway lessons are 1. Never help an orphan. 2. Never fall in love.
I didn’t hear you mention it so I don’t know if you know that The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy is a retelling of You’ve Got Mail-I can’t remember if that’s included in the blurb or not. You might like the movie if you haven’t seen it!

There's a book by Joseph Brodsky called Watermark: An Essay on Venice. I haven't gotten around to reading it yet but it seems like something that would be right up your alley! My favorite book of October was The Go-Between by L.P. Hartley for sure, one of my new fave novels of all time.❤❤

@@Jeroeny Honestly it was the best book of September by default as nothing else I read that month was better. I did like it however. Like you said the entire concept is what drew me in. I liked the overarching theme of "the grass isn't always greener" and how that played out. I liked how our protagonist came to terms with the realities of her life and how the ending wasn't her getting a better life via the supernatural elements that made up the majority of the text, but instead returning to her life in order to actually work on herself, it could of very easily had that "Back to the Future" ending where they came back to a more idealised present. I also really liked the dynamic between Nora and Hugo and the different perspective there interactions provided. I can't say I really get the "self help" aspect you mention, but cringy and 'feel good' kinda go hand in hand sometimes so can't fault it to badly for that imo :D
I have not read much more than a book a month through September and October, and I do a despicable job of keeping track of when I'm reading what. However, I can say I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Intern' by Michelle Campbell. I read it in October, and it is one of the first books I've been able to drive into for a story and stay gripped by the story for my entire read. I read Wuthering Heights for the first time in the Summer, and I completely agree with your thoughts about the terrible mood powers of Emily Bronte. Your commentary on 'Minor Detail' is high praise. One of my hesitations with BookTube lies with the paucity of contemporary serious literature on my read shelf. I've only recently understood that people enjoy reading the new books because they can talk about the currents of today with their peers. I hope people can not psychoanalyze that last sentence too much. It can be summed up as, 'book clubs, who knew!'. October was a fantastic reading month for me as well (12 books)! The books that stood out were rereads of wuthering heights and northanger abbey, gun island (thanks for recommending that), A Book of Form and Emptiness (Ruth Ozeki) and Summer light and then comes the night (Jon Kalman Stefansson)
I read a couple good books in September: The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea by Mishima (totally influenced by you hahah) and The White Book by Han Kang which was so beautiful and lyrical. The best October book was The Unwomanly Face of War by Svetlana Alexievich which is a non-fiction about women's experience during WW2. Minor Detail is on my November tbr and I can't wait to read it. :)

My fave spooky reads for October were Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill, lnterview with the Vampire by Anne Rice, & The Great Witch of Brittany by Louisa Morgan.
i read The Journey of the Book-People by Olga Tokarczuk last month and absolutely loved it. so many interesting ideas, likable characters and beautiful writing. currently reading Surprised by Joy by CS Lewis and loving it a lot, it feels so comforting for some reason
Didn’t have too many 5 reads lately, but two of the better ones that I read since September were Secret History (strong 4/5) and Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (in fact outstanding). Both worked really well with the fall theme 🍂 🍁
My faves were Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Paradise Rot by Jenny Hval, Revenge by Yoko Ogawa and a book of short stories by Hiromi Kawakami which idk if it has an English translation. Basically all, except for Kawakami, can count as horror/spooky/chilling reads 🧡

I already finished “Dork diaries Tales from a NOT-SO- Popular Party Girl” by Rachel Renée Russell as one of my favorite spooky books. It reads like a middle schoolers having a Halloween party and I thought this is the best book I ever read before. This book has characters, real people and places. I read a very disturbing horror book in October I can recommend with really good writing but extreme subject matter (def look up the trigger warnings because there's a lot): Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite. Also my favourite book in September was House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson and in October it was Sister, Maiden, Monster by Lucy A. Snyder.
I read the 5th book in the Harry Potter series, I read waiting for Gertrude a graveyard gothic and I love it. I think it was hilarious. Very mixed reviews on it but it’s definitely a highlight. Then I’m also reading the cat in the stacks murder mystery books I’m on book 7 I think. Such a cute little series
my september highlight was rereading the estonian classic Ohvrilaev, a wonderful book although it always makes me miserable. some october favourites include Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy and The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue :)
Some much better books about Venice (this is my forte; I am obsessed)! : Venice - Jan Morris Venice: Pure City - Peter Ackroyd The City of Falling Angels - Jon Berendt 3 Good Historical Fiction Books set in Venice: The Floating Book - Michelle Lovric The Venetian Contract - Marina Fiorato (she also wrote The Glassblower of Murano, which is a dual timeline modern/historical tale) The Book of Unholy Mischief - Elle Newmark 2 Good Modern Fiction books: Miss Garnet's Angel - Sally Vickers Death at La Fenice - Donna Leon (mystery, police procedural, start of a long series)
One Hundred Years of Solitude is her favorite book of all time - she has said this a number of times. She has video on this if you look back through her videos.
Emma if you are going to Venice I recommend a book called The Unfinished Palazzo! It tells the stories of 3 very interesting women and their relationship with Venice. I hope you will have a great time if not reading it, in travelling it 😀❤
you should read the passion by jeanette winterson before you go to venice!! its about a napolionic soldier and a venetian boatsmen's daughter and it's so beautiful and magical!
I read Wuthering Heights earlier this year and I absolutely had the worst time with it!! Yes, the language was beautiful but I hated every single character and that made it really hard to enjoy reading it 😢
I have that same Agatha Christie book. I haven’t read Endless Night yet. I did read a lot of Crooked House but I didn’t like it and couldn’t finish it. The best Agatha Christie is And Then There Were None.
If you want a really well-written history of Venice that really delves into the culture and the feel of the place, written by somebody who lived there, I have to recommend 'Venice' by Jan Morris. Probably the best book on Venice out there!
Can I recommend The Unicorn by Iris Murdoch to you? It is touted as simply gothic but it is absolutely bizarre batshit book I’ve ever read (though not unlike Murdoch’s usual style, who is, might I add, my favourite). It starts a lot like governess goes to a remote countryside area plot and might be perfect for reading around this time.
Being in the worst slump ever, I’m wondering if I can even go on with game of tomes. I really disliked both Wuthering Heights and Northanger Abbey which was a disappointment because I had enjoyed almost every other book. I feel like I am usually in such a reading mood in fall, but this year,it feels off. I’ll still tune in though, I’m still hoping something stirs me into another reading bout . I don't think that love story and Wuthering Heights should be mentioned in one sentence...in my opinion it should be summarized rather as Heathcliffs revenge story😊, but I agree 100% with the rest of your review!

Got a cold and sore throat at the moment so this was a nice one to just sit with...my favourite book from september october is probably either Godkiller by Hannah Kaner or The trees grew because i bled there by Eric LaRocca (read triggerwarnings) they were both amazingly done and i am looking forward to the second book (sunbringer) frok the trilogy!
"Wuthering Heights" is just astonishing. Who was it written for? No attempt made to placate the reader. Completely uncompromising. What a vision. The two takeaway lessons are 1. Never help an orphan. 2. Never fall in love.
I didn’t hear you mention it so I don’t know if you know that The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy is a retelling of You’ve Got Mail-I can’t remember if that’s included in the blurb or not. You might like the movie if you haven’t seen it!

There's a book by Joseph Brodsky called Watermark: An Essay on Venice. I haven't gotten around to reading it yet but it seems like something that would be right up your alley! My favorite book of October was The Go-Between by L.P. Hartley for sure, one of my new fave novels of all time.❤❤

@@Jeroeny Honestly it was the best book of September by default as nothing else I read that month was better. I did like it however. Like you said the entire concept is what drew me in. I liked the overarching theme of "the grass isn't always greener" and how that played out. I liked how our protagonist came to terms with the realities of her life and how the ending wasn't her getting a better life via the supernatural elements that made up the majority of the text, but instead returning to her life in order to actually work on herself, it could of very easily had that "Back to the Future" ending where they came back to a more idealised present. I also really liked the dynamic between Nora and Hugo and the different perspective there interactions provided. I can't say I really get the "self help" aspect you mention, but cringy and 'feel good' kinda go hand in hand sometimes so can't fault it to badly for that imo :D

I have not read much more than a book a month through September and October, and I do a despicable job of keeping track of when I'm reading what. However, I can say I thoroughly enjoyed 'The Intern' by Michelle Campbell. I read it in October, and it is one of the first books I've been able to drive into for a story and stay gripped by the story for my entire read. I read Wuthering Heights for the first time in the Summer, and I completely agree with your thoughts about the terrible mood powers of Emily Bronte. Your commentary on 'Minor Detail' is high praise. One of my hesitations with BookTube lies with the paucity of contemporary serious literature on my read shelf. I've only recently understood that people enjoy reading the new books because they can talk about the currents of today with their peers. I hope people can not psychoanalyze that last sentence too much. It can be summed up as, 'book clubs, who knew!'. October was a fantastic reading month for me as well (12 books)! The books that stood out were rereads of wuthering heights and northanger abbey, gun island (thanks for recommending that), A Book of Form and Emptiness (Ruth Ozeki) and Summer light and then comes the night (Jon Kalman Stefansson)
I read a couple good books in September: The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea by Mishima (totally influenced by you hahah) and The White Book by Han Kang which was so beautiful and lyrical. The best October book was The Unwomanly Face of War by Svetlana Alexievich which is a non-fiction about women's experience during WW2. Minor Detail is on my November tbr and I can't wait to read it. :)

i read The Journey of the Book-People by Olga Tokarczuk last month and absolutely loved it. so many interesting ideas, likable characters and beautiful writing. currently reading Surprised by Joy by CS Lewis and loving it a lot, it feels so comforting for some reason
Didn’t have too many 5 reads lately, but two of the better ones that I read since September were Secret History (strong 4/5) and Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (in fact outstanding). Both worked really well with the fall theme 🍂 🍁

My faves were Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Paradise Rot by Jenny Hval, Revenge by Yoko Ogawa and a book of short stories by Hiromi Kawakami which idk if it has an English translation. Basically all, except for Kawakami, can count as horror/spooky/chilling reads 🧡

The movie, A Dangerous Beauty, takes place in Venice. Highly recommend.
I already finished “Dork diaries Tales from a NOT-SO- Popular Party Girl” by Rachel Renée Russell as one of my favorite spooky books. It reads like a middle schoolers having a Halloween party and I thought this is the best book I ever read before. This book has characters, real people and places. I read a very disturbing horror book in October I can recommend with really good writing but extreme subject matter (def look up the trigger warnings because there's a lot): Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite.
Also my favourite book in September was House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson and in October it was Sister, Maiden, Monster by Lucy A. Snyder.
I read the 5th book in the Harry Potter series, I read waiting for Gertrude a graveyard gothic and I love it. I think it was hilarious. Very mixed reviews on it but it’s definitely a highlight. Then I’m also reading the cat in the stacks murder mystery books I’m on book 7 I think. Such a cute little series

my september highlight was rereading the estonian classic Ohvrilaev, a wonderful book although it always makes me miserable. some october favourites include Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy and The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue :)

I read Wuthering Heights earlier this year and I absolutely had the worst time with it!! Yes, the language was beautiful but I hated every single character and that made it really hard to enjoy reading it 😢
I have that same Agatha Christie book. I haven’t read Endless Night yet. I did read a lot of Crooked House but I didn’t like it and couldn’t finish it. The best Agatha Christie is And Then There Were None.

If you want a really well-written history of Venice that really delves into the culture and the feel of the place, written by somebody who lived there, I have to recommend 'Venice' by Jan Morris. Probably the best book on Venice out there!
fave book from september was Yellowface and fave from october was The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches :)
Can I recommend The Unicorn by Iris Murdoch to you? It is touted as simply gothic but it is absolutely bizarre batshit book I’ve ever read (though not unlike Murdoch’s usual style, who is, might I add, my favourite). It starts a lot like governess goes to a remote countryside area plot and might be perfect for reading around this time.

Being in the worst slump ever, I’m wondering if I can even go on with game of tomes. I really disliked both Wuthering Heights and Northanger Abbey which was a disappointment because I had enjoyed almost every other book. I feel like I am usually in such a reading mood in fall, but this year,it feels off. I’ll still tune in though, I’m still hoping something stirs me into another reading bout . I don't think that love story and Wuthering Heights should be mentioned in one sentence...in my opinion it should be summarized rather as Heathcliffs revenge story😊, but I agree 100% with the rest of your review!
