I've been playing with the lapel since blue. My training partners are looking forward to this release while I'm looking forward to training with you in San Pedro! Thank you for continuing to be an inspiration.
Summary of video: Keenan is bored that nobody has caught up yet (except maybe Leandro) so he's gonna help you all out. So he can then unveil the next bag of tricks. The anti-anti-lapel 🤣
LOL Andre’s commercial cuts in at 15:30…. “hey guys! i just shot 6 hours on my favorite guard passes and how to completely shut down lapel guard” awesome haha
I think 'street worm' would be a great marketing tool - a video where you defeat thugs in the street one by one with lapel guard, you would silence a lot of haters.
Aloha Keenan. I matched you on Oahu, Hawaii as purple, I'm thinking Kaiser gym. I gi wrapped your arm for arm wrap arm bar. We stalled out, in butterfly. You were stumped, I couldn't finish the drag for back or arm bar. I also recall you'd video every single match then.
Thank you keenan for all the useful instructionals and youtube videos for me to study. Im a blue belt trying out lapel guard right now and ive noticed that I can catch other blue belts right now with sweeps and subs since they are used to the traditional positions. Its still a work in progress and im excited to learn all of it. From lapel guard, to lapel passing and worm wrestling.
Thanks for sharing, such an amazing story and great insight, i love the lapel guard, worm guard and squid guard game, I was actually having huge success and dominating higher belts as a blue belt using this system on the mats free rolling. Because i had a pro level back ground in mma it actually caught a lot of pure bred bjj guys off guard when we use to roll and i would usually get "wow i didnt expect that from you mate wtf" haha... i am brown belt now and still happily lapelling, worming and squidding my way through rounds suprising people with a look of disbelief...... Oss 💪😂
Besides all that rickson and helio gracie comment and american jiu-jitsu bullshit, you´re a great chapter in the history of the guard. Your role in the development of jiu-jitsu is undeniable!
Yeah, I think most people realize they can use the lapels to trap limbs and create stress for their partner. I know that I figured out to use my own lapel ends to choke people on my own, without learning actual techniques for it at the time. It is interesting that no one decided to explore the lapel ends from a guard perspective in any deep way until Keenan. I know my very old school Brazilian coach always gave me a hard time when he saw me doing silly or annoying stuff with lapels. Mostly tying up other people's wrists or covering their hand. He didn't like it. I bet that's true for most "traditional" BJJ guys.
@@Silence-and-Violence I’m pretty sure there were people that did this before Keenan, but I don’t have concrete evidence. The thing about martial arts is there is nothing new under the sun. Keenan is probably the only one noteworthy to do this kind of guard in a competition that allowed it. Judoka use the lapel to tie up limbs and it’s acceptable in dojos. BJJ gyms were my first experiences with people not liking the use of their lapels to trap them.
I dont think beating somebody with a move they cant beat is cheasy. Maybe using a one time trick to beat someone that falls appart the second time is chease. But i think the fact that you understand how to defeat your system is a true symbol of your mastery of it.
Yeah sure man. So typically want you to do in sport / competition context is perform what is called a 'guard pull'. When you successfully accomplish this, the next objective is to work yourself into one of the most devastating BJJ guards, the '50/50' guard. Ideally you want to be in a position on the mat where you have a clear view of the clock, because the next phase is crucial: 'tactical stalling'. You want to do nothing without making it look like you're doing nothing, until there's only 20 seconds left in the match. At this point, you want to execute what is known as a 'sweep'. This will award you 2 points, and there won't be any time left for your opponent to earn any points. In other words, 2 point victory to you, gg, upload footage of your win to TH-cam to show the world you're a BJJ ninja
The issue is that many people have just decided to do exclusively no gi. To be honest learning leg locks and control systems is more interesting than learning a system that only exists because of the sport aspects of bjj and becomes utterly useless in any other scenario.
But the leg lock game only exists because of the sport too. It’s definitely not a good idea in a street fight to be diving on the floor and rolling for leglocks so both aspects of are arbitrary and sport specific.
@@holdenmuganda97 Many people have used the heelhook, kneebar, or banana split-type subs successfully in the UFC. They are of course not as major a component of MMA as the RNC, guillotine, triangle, or armbar, but they are always there as a not-insignificant threat. You cannot deny that lapel guards are less relevant than leglocks for MMA (th-cam.com/video/jIZRE9ivcec/w-d-xo.html) or in a street fighting scenario (th-cam.com/video/7UhsjTkyAZk/w-d-xo.html).

This is one of those things I could never understand about gi rules. If we put our fingers inside someone's sleeve, that's illegal because there is too much control. But, wrapping the lapel or belt around your opponent's limb or body is somehow allowed? The gi game is dominated by DLR, Berimbolos, and lapel guards. I showed some clips of ibjjf matches to some friends and they said (paraphrasing) why are people constantly sitting on the floor, going upside down, and just resting. This new series by Keenan might show effective counters and passing. But, I would argue that the advantage is still heavily in favor of the guard player. This is why even as a Judoka, I started training more in no-gi than gi.
I hate people who rip on lapel and worm guards. I think it’s sick as hell that the GI can be stretched and manipulated in infinite ways. It’s way technical and more like a game than no gi is. No gi is lame because everywhere just tries to touch feet.
@@ddwfw My friend, The Gracie's didn't develop a system. They used Judo. Check out, th-cam.com/video/1WMey67SF2k/w-d-xo.html Chadi YT Channel is loaded with great old and new Judo clips.
@@jiujudo1307 I knew it was chadi's channel from reading the first line :) (btw judo shodan here) Ok yes, they learned from Maeda, so they had elements of Kodokan and Kosen judo plus Maeda's teachings, he fought in vale tudo style matches so I'm sure he had put some thought into entering the pocket in a match with strikes. But yes the Gracies did develop their system, GJJ original curriculum is not what they would teach you in judo's dojos. Examples? The heavy use of lead leg front kicks to close the distance against an opponent who can strike and then look for the clinch, or the "taparia", sparring with open hand slaps. Pre WW2 Judo was their root so it was very similar, but the most important thing they did was being able to maintain the self-defense mentality, they never got away from that. Why? the warrior spirit is definitely part of that, but also they didn't have economic problems so they could keep practicing to honor certain warrior ideals rather than winning tournaments. On the other hand, Kano sensei heavily pushed for Judo to be an Olympic sport and a widely accepted part of Japanese culture, for example making it a pillar of physical education in schools. The Gracies couldn't care less about that, they cared about real fighting, and I have to respect that.
Although I enjoy gi more because it's way deeper and enjoyable, I think Nogi is probably more realistic in a street fight. I do both in class and it's pretty easy to separate the two. Actually I have adapted some gi stuff to no-gi. Not taking credit for it, I'm sure they already exist, it just comes naturally to adapt things. But don't think if someone has a jacket on in the street that I would default to rear naked. If I can snatch a bow and arrow or clock choke, I'm going for it. 😂
