I normally wear Creed or Penhaligon. Based upon the recommendation here I went out and purchased a bottle of Old Spice. I like it, I see it fitting in causal occasions, Saturday afternoons perhaps. Oh for those comments about it being a Grandpa scent Old Spice has an answer. On the box "If your Grandfather Hadn't worn it , You wouldn't exist." enough said.
Old spice makes a glass bottle version that is a little more expensive but still very affordable, I don’t have the plastic bottle one to compare but many say it smells exactly as the Shulton one smelled and smells much better than the plastic bottle version. It’s called old spice original and has 2 lines through the the logo if anyone is interested
Everyone seems so surprised that they like the original Old Spice. Is it the low price? Really, in terms of classic gentlemen's scents that originated in the golden age of menswear, it is the quintessential one. It was also standard issue aftershave for every American G.I. in WWII. There is no other fragrance with a more classic masculine pedigree.
I wore Old Spice to a party last year. It was the only time I had women give me a second sniff. I think it is because it’s completely opposite of what is popular today with young men.
I am 25 and have been using 4711 for a couple of years now and I absolutely love it but I do like my vintage and classic fragrances anyway to me it feel refreshing after a hard day to get home and putt some on
I actually like 4711, and some of the small pocket bottles they make are really good to carry around with you if you're travelling, especially if flying somewhere, but it doesn't really last too long at all sadly. Aramis, Dunhill, and Paco Rabanne are also pretty good. Overall I prefer the more classic scents. They've lasted for a reason I feel. So, it was a good test range, and I'll definitely be trying some of the others out.
I like it too. I feel like this video got mired down by misinformation. Many of the notes quoted were wrong and the whole effort to define where and when something should be worn is a bit silly.
I wouldn't be able to tell you anything about the notes personally. I go so far as to be able to say something smells of citrus, lavender, or some spice etc. Compared to mine therefore, some of these people seem to have the nose of a bloodhound. I do actually agree that some scents are perhaps better suited to occasions, evening events, or perhaps seasons though, but at the end of the day, it depends on you personally. It's hardly like turning up to a black tie event in board shorts or some such.
Dear team of the Gentleman's Gazette, firstly, thanks a lot for the video. I really wanted to know about some cheap classics. Secondly, if I can suggest a video, I would say, "Is it worth it: Creed Fragrances" would definitely be a great one. Keep up the good work guys!
I typically use wood hue which is a fragrance developed in the 20th century and worn most famously by Dean Martin. It has a fantastic scent and I always get complements on it. The only issue is that it is no longer produced so getting refills is hard to come by. This video has helped me try to expand from that simple fragrance and hopefully save some of that wood hue for more special occasions! Thanks!
I understand why you might have not liked the Paco Robanne, However I will always swear by it. My Great grandpapa and my father made great use of it, as do I. I will concede that I am a little biased, and certainly feeling a manner of nostalgia for the fragrence, however I have also never met anyone who'd come to dislike it, infact usually it was met rather warmly, its nothing overly special however it is certainly a good smelling cologne
Not from the team.. Just a frag head, but that's an interesting question, and I would like to give it a take. Terre D'hermes is timeless, unique and good spring entry. Tom Ford Noir is complicated and dark autumn-winter, but for sure very gentlemanly. That's my take on your very interesting question, but before you buy better to buy 1ml sample from ebay and skin test it.
I think you’d appreciate the Eau de Toilette of Habit Rouge even more-more transparent and layered, stronger bitter citrus and less vanilla sweetness with more suede leather. Gorgeous classic.
Versace L'Homme is an 80s classic. An Italian spice and leather fragrance, with a pungent, overpowering bergamot opening that could best be described as a vintage medicine cabinet explosion.
I absolutely LOVE 4711 and I'm 45! My ONLY problem with it is that it it doesn't project OR last very long. I use it mostly after I shave before I go to bed
I would have to agree with the team, and give Paco Rabanne a 3 out of 5... intense yet masculine and perfect for office special days. Gives you the confidence gentlemen wore back in the day..
I love old school frags and I recently picked up a bottle of PR pour homme and I’m addicted. It’s long lasting and fresh which isn’t easy for any fresh fragrance or one that’s considered “older”
Geo F Trumpers is a company you should do a video on, they’ve been making shaving creams, colognes and after shaves since 1875 and still have the same shop in England. George Trumper was a perfumist who made perfumes for the queen of England.
4711 is a unisex scent. I've used this for years. Inis Energy of the Sea is my go to now. But I have 4711 on stand by. I visited Cologne and the 4711 factory.
I personally use Davidoff's Blue Water. It is fresh, elegant and it gives me an unique style. When i use it i can smell a walk in the woods under a sunny day of September. (and also, not to forget, women love it);)
It's so sad that 4711 gets schtick as it does. I wear it on hot summer days and it smells lovely and fresh, aside from the fact that it smells quite similar to Neroli Portofino by Tom Ford.
personally I like paco rabbane pour homme but it's not best suited for indoors, IMO. too hot and heavy. I'd wear it in the autumn, walking in the woods or a fireworks display, etc. that kind of thing. old spice is like drakkar noir in the sense that it's something I like, but something I'd just wear for myself around the house or doing yard work.
The Chanel Pour Monsieur EdP dates from 2016, the old one is the EdT and has less vanilla. And if you want less vanilla in the Caron there's the "sport" flanker apparently.
Hey there. Been following the Gentleman's Gazette for sometime. I wanted to make a request. Could you make a video on watches, and if you do, please tell where you can find pocket watches. Does Fort Belvedere sell them?
I usually go for bold stuff, i love dark fragrances , i like a lot of «strong stuff» like black coffee and smokey scotch so i guess it just follows me in the fragrance world... 😍😁
I wonder if there are recommendations for distinguished refined gentlemen, 50's to 70's, upper-class income and lifestyle, very dressy formal and semi-formal occasions (often a tux), such as the opera, ballet, and symphony concerts. Thank you.
I've always loved Old Spice...the original Shulton version. The new formulation...meh! Dunhill for Men has been a favorite of mine for thirty years. It's masculine and very traditional. I've got Habit Rouge in my rotation but, I don't reach for it often. It's soft and powdery and that's not my normal vibe.
Remarkably for a fragrance video I know all these fragrances and with the exception of Old Spice (which I remember from years ago) own a sample, decant or full bottle of each. What do I think? I think many of these smell quite dated. I'm a fan of classic fragrances but so many of these smell old fashioned in a not so good way, or might have been better in an original incarnation. I'm unclear whether you tested the Chanel in EDP or EDT form. They are different. The latter being the original, but a little weak in todays formulation and the EDP not quite so good smell wise but lasts longer. Nevertheless I'd still rate it best of the ones in the video, though the Caron also has its fans. For DH Harris I recommend Arlington or Windsor. Geo F Trumper deserves a special part of this comment to itself. In Limes you've chosen their least lasting fragrance that you'll be lucky to get more than 30 mins out of. This makes it practically useless in my opinion. While their Eau de Cologne and Eau De Portugal don't last much longer every one of their others is excellent to my taste. Beautifully classic without seeming dated, they have fragrances you'll likely not smell anything like elsewhere like the beautifully named and smelling Eau de Quinine, Milk of Flowers, Ajaccio Violets and Wild Fern. Highly recommended as a fragrance house for lovers of Gentleman's Classic scents. Thanks for an interesting video!
I'm wearing Aramis as I write this. It is a good fragrance. It does not last very long on me, though. I have to reapply often. The price affords me the opportunity to be liberal with application.
While I do appreciate vintage clothes, older cologne recipes tend to make you smell a little bit outdated. Oakmoss was the big 80's note and I'm not convinced that you want to smell that way nowadays for instance. There are some very gentlemanly and more updated fragrances that I'd highly recommend. For instance Cartier's Declaration d'un soir (heavy on the rose but in a masculine way) and Lalique's Encre noir series that's more stereotypically masculine, heavy on the vetiver and wood notes.
Of the classic fragrances, I like 'Imperiale' by Guerlain ... a unisex fragrance created in 1853 that smells like a gin and tonic. Originally created for Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III. Another great classic fragrance that is unisex is Eau d'Hadrien by Annick Goutal.
Great job! At part one I observed for absence of Habit Rouge which is here. Now some recommendations for part 3: Brut by Faberge, Drakkar Noir, Azzaro Pour Homme, Davidoff Cool Water and maybe even Zino.
Paco Rabanne pour homme is awful. I bought a bottle (2011 reformulation) and it's very overwhelming and outdated smelling. Maybe if you can find a vintage bottle, it would smell better, but I sold it after the first couple times I wore it. Paco Rabanne Sport aftershave smells great, though.
Hi guys! Could you perhaps do a video on spring/summer jackets and coats? I'm really struggling in finding a proper toplayer for these seasons that is not super trendy or modern.
Well, Fragonard's Frivole is wonderful, and quite exclusive too - only a handful of retail stores in the Worlds and they don't sell in big distribution.
I completely agree on Caron pour un homme. I got nothing but a cloying dry and powdery lavender vanilla, it’s a zero for me as well. I can’t understand why it is often recommended by fragrance reviewers.
Have you tried "Jaguar for men" (green bottle)? A 1988 frangrance I discovered a couple months ago and I'm quite surprised it's very cheap dispite the "prestige" brand. Here (France) You can buy for 12€ / 100ml.

Like you, I don’t like the frequent combination of lavender, and vanilla, which I think belongs in ice cream. In your former top ten classics, I really was happy to see my two top favorites, Eau Sauvage by Dior, and Vetiver by Guerlain. My other favorite (which may not be 30 years old) is IsseyMiyaki. What is your opinion of it? I like to use it in Summer.
Somehow, these videos make me think that Raphael really isn't that much of a perfume connaisseur to begin with. ;) No offense, but some of those mini reviews really didn't do the scents any justice, even when taking into account, that the olfactory sense is the most subjective. Too bad you didn't pick one of the more unique and interesting Geo F. Trumper scents such as "Marlborough" or "Eucris". Those really smell like nothing you will find on the shelves today. Caron pour un homme is my signature scent btw...^^ Und Raphael: Das 4711-Oma-Trauma scheint in der Tat ein exklusiv deutsches Ding zu sein. ;)
I own the 4711 cologne, and... The feeling and the smell of aplying that cologne, is hypnotizingly fresh, but VERY FRESH, it allows You to Open your nose foses, haha.
