@@Natureboy_23 My apologies. For the late response. I haven’t done a video yet but I can guide you on what you need to do. Felons can become merchant seaman but it depends on what the felony is and how long ago it was. Also, the rules always change depending on who’s in office and how bad the industry needs merchant seaman at that time. You can call the coast guard and ask them if you’re eligible +1 (888) 427-5662. HelloUser-pk7ro1rv4I thanks for watching. Typical day. You start work at 6:00am until 7:30am then you sit and eat breakfast until 8:00am. Then you’ll sit down and have the morning meeting that can last 15,20,30,45mins or 1 hr just depends on how nice your supervisor is. After the morning meeting you work until 10:00am then you take a 15mins break. Then you work from 10:15am to 12:00pm.Lunch break is normally 1hr. Then you work from 1:00pm to 3:00pm and you take another 15min break. Then work from 3:15pm to 5:30pm. Eat dinner from 5:30pm to 6:00pm. Then you work from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. You’re not always constantly standing and some of the jobs you can sit down on a bucket to do. For more helpful tips and information. Hey, King I love the name moorishprince5070. Yes, absolutely you can. We have people that join the engine department that didn’t know anything about engines. You definitely have time to learn and work your way up. As a wiper you’re not expected to know anything because you’re just starting at entry level. They have all kinds of test questions and answers study guides as well as schools to help you move up to each level in the engine room. Another great part about schooling is you only need to have 120days sea time working in a position before you can take a coastguard approved test/ requirements to be promoted to the next level. Hello, Random Indiana Guy That stands for General Utility Deck Engine. Basically you’re assigned to and you primarily work in the engine room but you help out on deck with docking and undocking the ship whenever it goes into or leaves a port.
Thanks for this question. I couldn't find what a GUDE was anywhere on the net. Even this vid didn't explain at beginning. So I guess a GUDE is another name for a Wiper?
Hey, @Lutong_Tsamba_TV that’s okay myself and many other seaman don’t know how to swim. I do believe everyone should know how to swim and I do plan on taking classes but you don’t have to know how to swim. All you need to know is how to properly put on a life jacket and a survival suit. Also you will need to know how to board the life boat or life raft on your ship which they will show you what to do when you take life boat and water survival classes. Thank you for your kind words Jan Stefanov. You’re more than welcome. It’s kinda expected but it’s not mandatory it’s up to you. You do have the right to say no.As long as there is not anything important going on in the engine room just let the 1st engineer know that you’re not working overtime today then it’s normally not a problem. Also, on a lot of ships you don’t even work the full overtime hrs but you still get paid. @@merchantseamancommunity8302 thankyou, one question, can someone from engine rating be an engineer, after oiler rank how much money takes and how much time takes if someone interest to be an engineer
@@acpthc You’re welcome acp thc. Yes, you can become a engineer once you reach the oiler rating. You need 1080 days of sea time to become a engineer. Out of the 1080 days they will include some of the time that you had at entry level as a wiper/deu/gude they will accept at least 120 days I believe. You would have to sail at least 236days a year for 5 years to reach the 1080 days needed to take the coast guard approved test/requirements. Once you have the sea time 1080days it doesn’t cost you anything to go to the coast guard and take the tests but there will be about 5 or 6 other classes you will have to take. If you’re apart of a union most unions won’t charge you to take those classes if you’re not a part of a union then those classes could be anywhere from $1000 or more per class but you wouldn’t have to pay for or take all those classes at once and you do have some other companies that would pay for it as well. I have a program that I’ve mentioned in the book where you can go from entry level to a 3rd engineer in about 2 1/2 to 3 years.
How did you start? Did you go through Seafarers? I have had an MMD before. I was in MSC. I want to go out to sea again. I am currently in Diesel Mechanics school with a 94% average. Perfect attendence, etc.
Hey, exexpat11 thanks for watching. Yes I went through the SIU apprenticeship program. With your knowledge of diesel engines you would be perfect for the engine department. Do you have my book? “The Complete Guide To Becoming A Merchant Seaman How To Make $5,000 To $10,000 a Month Without a GED Or High School Diploma Just click the link below www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Becoming-Merchant-Seaman/dp/0578896184/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?dchild=1&keywords=merchant+seaman+book&qid=1634053339&sr=8-5 I recommend picking up the book. Inside I have a list of unions, private companies, maritime colleges and other programs to consider besides MSC or SIU. I would look at each program see what’s required then see which one is the best fit for you.
@Black Magic Thanks for watching Black Magic. When you sign on to a ship you will work in whatever position you sign on as. If you sign on as a GUDE then you will primarily work in the engine room and only help the deck the department with docking or undocking the ship. If you do anything else in the deck department it will be up to the Cheif engine. At entry level you can take a job in any of the entry level positions os, wiper or sa. You need 120days in the engine or deck department and 180days in the steward department before you can take the coast guard approved test to upgrade to the next position in that department. For more helpful tips and information check out my book The Complete Guide To Becoming A Merchant Seaman How To Make $5,000 to $10,000 A Month Without a GED Or High School diploma click the link below ⬇️ www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Becoming-Merchant-Seaman/dp/0578896184/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?crid=15985OCBPIV64&keywords=how+to+become+a+merchant+seaman&qid=1641167837&sprefix=how+to+become+a+mer%2Caps%2C108&sr=8-1
@Black Magic You’re more than welcome Black Magic. I understand how you’re feeling. I know you wanted a SA job but look at it this way. As a C book you know how hard it is to get a job so you may want to just keep it. Pros are you will be making money and the work as a GUDE isn’t hard. Also, if you keep it that will be time towards your B book. Now to answer your question if you throw it back in there’s nothing that will happen to you. Now once you sign on to a ship then the only way to get off and not have it held against you is by saying you have a family emergency. I’ve seen plenty of guys throw jobs back in. Now here’s the thing because you’re a C book the port agent might not be happy with you and he may or may not try to keep you from getting another job. I’ll also say this YOU DON’T OWE THE PORT AGENTS ANYTHING. In my experience they’re not your friends. It’s just business. Their job is to put people on ships. Even though they may pretend to be looking out for you their not going to do us any favors. They don’t care if it’s a low paying ship or the ship has a bad crew because their not the ones that have to go out on the ship we are.Don’t ever let them try to pressure you to take a job that you don’t want. Now as a C book you might have to just play it kool and humble yourself until you get the B or A book or become a licensed merchant seaman. Also you have to look at your money situation. If you let this job go you could find another job right away or it might be another month or 2 months before you find a job.
I went to union hall yesterday here in Houston . I really want to go deep sea rotary like 3 months or more so I see a GUDE that I want so when the agent started calling a job call then I told the agent I would like to get the Gude he said let me give u something a tanker ship 60 days job which is the lonestar states tanker ship . I was like men why why why ? Since I’m new C card so I took the job . Next time I won’t allow them agent to do that to me ever again .

Great videos man I’m trying to join
In my book I have list of unions, maritime colleges, private companies and a government contracted company . The book also includes a very detailed step by step process on how to become a Merchant Seaman
@@merchantseamancommunity8302 can you do a video on felons joining. If you already have I will find it
@@Natureboy_23 My apologies. I hope that helped
I REALLY NEED TO KNOW IF YOUR REQUIREMENT IS 12 HOUR SHIFT BASICALL ARE STANDING AT ALL TIMES IS THERE BREAKS
Can you be a wiper if u know nothing about engines like can you work your way up does it require some schooling
What is a GUDE?
Hello, Random Indiana Guy
That stands for
General Utility Deck Engine.
Basically, yup
I wanna work on ship but i cant swim haha. 😅😅
Do you have some more updated videos?
Your videos are very informative and well made. Thank you very much. I always wonder about the overtime you mention as a wiper/OS, is it expected or can you say no?
Thank you for your kind words
Jan Stefanov.
@@merchantseamancommunity8302 thankyou so much mate, good information sir, later ill explore your book as link above, thankyou so much 💙

I recommend picking up the book.
