It's old Super Mario Bros. Boardgame time. But! Not the Milton Bradley one you're probably expecting. It's from British company Waddingtons in 1992, and it's very cheap and badly designed! I'll let you discover for yourself...
At least it's got all your fave characters: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, Bowser, Alfredo, Kooky Boy 7, Squarbious, and Hurbleflurb McGinty!
I can only imagine most of the money went on licensing the product from Nintendo. (Actually most of Waddington's games of the period were like this, so probably not.)
Between thin Larry and bald Ashens it feels slightly like watching an alternate universe episode.
That or they're just cheap knockoffs from Poundland.

I'd just like to point out that when Larry and Stuart played the Donkey Kong board game 10 years ago, they made the exact same joke that the third brother of Mario and Luigi is named Alfredo.

_Well you see, Ashens, when I developed this game I intended it to be played in a zero gravitational environment as part of a grand inter-galactic tournament on the far side of the planet Xena instead of a traditional table top board game. The extra Mario and Luigi pieces are actually Aliens that are impersonating the Mario Bros as body duplicates and that is why it's imperative that you, the real Mario and Luigi rescue her first. It is a co-op game._
_Any problems encountered with the board game are either fictitious or a result of the board game being ahead of its time_

I wasn't prepared for the drama of the teleporting princess, however was prepared for the fact that a nearly thirty minute video of three men playing a silly boardgame would fly by like a summer breeze. Ashens collaborations and indeed solo material tends to be consistantly amusing and paced well, thus can be watched in a single sitting irregardless of length without pausing the video. By allowing the zap brick to zap already removed brick(itself) you maintain the status quo and keeping the "1 brick per turn" flow, without giving +1 or -1 to the brick/turn ratio, allowing you to maintain pressure on your opponents. The inclusion of this rule changes the game completely, as it enables you to... ugh, I run out of bullshit.
Last time I saw Larry was about 20 years ago on Sky's game network channel. Before everyone had the Internet, people would ring up to ask for cheats which Larry would post onto the TV screen.🤔😍

1:00 I'm 43, this is not weird. Mario mania pretty much extended from Super Mario Bros all the way to Super Mario World so the character was still on everything in that period. I used to have an awesome glass Mario 2 mug that came from Wal-Mart or something back in the day....good times...

Yeah, the NES did abysmally over here as it was ludicrously expensive, and we got it in 1987 instead of 1985!

Surely those circles with arrows in the princess boxes are supposed to be spaces? So there's more or less depending which column you enter through.
I think the arrows are meant to signify that if you land on that space you keep moving to the Princess. Like the arrow spaces in Sorry!

One minor adjustment would be you don't need to land on the short cut but can chose to take it when passing over it.

As for the brick turnover mechanic, i suppose you can pick to land on that when you're on a shortcut. On those tiles you get a pick of 2 options ~
I think this game could be massive improved by letting players move in either direction around the board. It's not very Mario Bros but it would add some element of strategy.

Reading a photo of the rules on Boardgame Geek, if you land on the same square, you're supposed to go onto the next square. ZAP bricks are the only ones that don't auto discard... so you could leave it there to hit it again. If someone's heading to a castle, they also get reset if someone fails to find a princess. For the round spaces it says "and move your way onto the castle", so I believe they are supposed to be counted spaces...

The Robot Wars game episode was AWESOME I really really hope they get into board games more! I'm pretty sure Ashens' audience are older and more into longer chill videos like this.
I love videos on TH-cam that can keep you around for over at least 20 minutes.

This game could have been greatly improved and a million times more popular as a Mario board game if all they added were four more pieces, for bad guys, goombas and koopas, and a second dice that you rolled so you would move them around the board and if they landed on the space you were on you lose a life and get bounced back to start, and vice versa so if you're moving forward and you land on one of the enemies, they would get bounced back to their start position.

When going up to the castle, you actually were suppose to walk till you reach the princess space. Not just the middle row.
And when they said "replace" the princess token.
I asume there are more then 4 tokens. And you were suppose to swap them out.
Making it possible that there is no princess on the board at the start.
I took "replace" to mean "turn the token face down again in the same spot".

its been a long time since I watched ashens and larry again and Im impressed that larry turned into luigi and ashens into a bald mario, good episode though
I could see this being an interesting game with a bit of a twist: instead of rolling to move, you have a hand of cards with different effects similar to the bricks (move X spaces, zap X bricks, shuffle the princesses) along with some more interesting effects (swap places with a player, curse a player to move backwards, and so on).
It was sold in Canada for a brief time in a store called K-mart (If you remember that you're ancient).

That has got to be the only place you'll ever see "Shuffle the Princesses". ^_^ Interesting but not quite what I was expecting, thought it would like pipe paths on the other side of the cards for like a dynamic path system rather than general powerups. Probably what inspired most childhood examples of board game design, bland licensed ones heh.

Err well actually Stuart :Adjusts thick glasses on face: I think you’ll find the castle is not one big space, the arrows clearly indicate four spaces up to the castle itself.
Of course Stuart has read the instructions and I haven’t so maybe he’s right and the yellow arrows mean nothing. In which case the board is very misleading.
The rules say clockwise, but the pieces are moving counter clockwise.

I think the idea behind the "zap any brick, including the zap brick" is if you were trying to hinder other players who might be close to getting to the castle.
"We've got a back up Luigi" is exactly what I think when I'm playing Italian tanks in War Thunder and my gunner or driver gets knocked out.
Larry looks like he could do a perfect cosplay of Igor from Persona.
Fun fact: The unlicensed A500 port of this board game was called Super Drag-Out. All four player pieces were Luigi (called Luggo) with slightly different shades of blue on their thin outlines. Three of the four difficulty settings would merely slow down animations, the fourth would also remove the princess from play. It still scored up to 72% in reviews and sold thousands of copies.

Wonder when Mario will ever tire of having to rescue that b**** princess and just have a don't give a s*** kind of attitude, I can imagine his inner monologue saying "Uhhh F***THAT B****! Bowser, or King Koopa can keep her, so sick of going and getting her back!" Also he probably needs to collect the coins to pay for his mushroom addiction so in the past he had to rescue her to support his addiction, but he is going to rehab and the princess can rot inside Bower's or King Koopa's castle!
