It does look like an S at an angle and a D straight on. Did you look at it under higher magnification. I would love to hear what you found out about it. Happy Hunting! GD

You may want to revise your nickel mat. The third row on the left - "Jefferson Nickel (30s)" - should simply be 1939-P, since all the other 1930s options are already listed in the "low mintage" or "key dates" sections.
Right? I'm leaning towards 'S', but my initial reaction was 'D'. And it looks different depending on how you angle it in the light. And that's awesome, great find!!

My grandfather has a mid 1800s home and he found a walking liberty half dollar and a 1927 standing liberty quarter and a bunch of Indian head pennies and arrow heads medel detecting years ago and his place was built on top of a Indian bairuil ground

I already have $100 bucks face value of Jefferson nickels from both the 1940's and 1950's. I enjoy the hunt and I know it is just for fun and collecting. However, are they ever going to be worth more than face value? How much can I sell them for? They are already taking up space now. I don't really want to just bring them back to the bank-lol. I also have twelve full rolls of war nickels but I bought ten of those and I'm definitely keeping those since they have silver in them.

I was coming home from a road trip to the lockin festival this summer and got a 1938 Nichol in change from a subway that we stopped at for lunch and it was a triple die I believe for that date and from a penny box found a 1971 del and a 1972 ddo 104 no joke a 1982 zink small date ddr no shit
I have a quarter that between the eagles legs is an anomaly. Looking straight at it is an s. Turn it down becomes a 9. To the left is a b. The right is a D.
I will give you more than a buck for that 43p. Can't find them around here. If you like mint mutants, ( to borrow a Charles Shultz phrase) I've got twelveltyquillion of those.
the 1938 Denver/San Fran could be either I suggest get a micro scope here's a link amzn.to/2JFQtcS the second 1938 is a proof that is why it looked odd

it is definitely cleaned. looks like with a wire brush. it’s all scratched up and considered a cull.

I can't tell what mintmark that 1938 is either. Also my dad found an NIFC Half Dollar in his change, a 2018 from Denver. 6.1 million minted.

The 1938 is an S. I believe at least, but you should look under a scope or a loop.

I just got a nickel box with four buffalos all full date 2 1929 p, a 1929 s, and a 1918 and the 1918 was a reverse side up ender
