This song talks about a war between Mexico and USA. The battle was called "Batalla de la Angostura" on 1847. The troops used to play trumpets and drums when they were going to fight, Fernando is a name in Spanish, It means the song talks about 2 Mexican soldiers that had to cross the Rio Grande to fight for "Freedom in this Land". The American troops of the general Zachary Taylor were in Saltillo, Mexico and Mexico had not enough soldiers, the Mexican government called young people to fight, and the song says "we were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die". It's a beautiful song that tells us about American and Mexican history.

A big salute to all soldiers of the world who fought for freedom , this is their song. It's not about victory but how they fought the battle that matters. Thanks to Abba for this song.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love this song by Abba. I always puzzled over a Swedish group singing a song of a Mexican-American war, but they did a great job with a beautiful song. Abba's harmonization is flawless! A really talented group of singers!
GizmetDora Lopez I love to acknowledge another's culture. Otherwise how can we learn of their beauty and wonder, their honor, sometimes their history, as well.
I must tell you: I had listened and liked the music of this beautiful song for a long time without knowing the lyrics / history behind... Now that I've learnt 'em, ...I just felt tears in my eyes that I couldn't quell...What a beautiful song...!
I feel so emotional, i feel so inlove.. actually it's totally mix emotions whenever i listen to this song.. it's such a wonderful song it makes me happy and free❤️❤️❤️ 21st century girl loves 70's music
Just a beautiful song that grows more poignant and appreciated as time passes.. no one will ever rival Abba when it comes to the beauty and poetry within all their ballads and sheer joy of their pop songs . 50 years later the world is still listening .. thank you for the music... ❤
You know what you can tell how good a band is when you are still listening to their songs 20 30 years lata...love this still sounds really good...ahhh xx
I never paid much attention to this song when I was young; I couldn't stand so called disco music. I was reintroduced to this song when watching That 70's Show and I caught a few of the lyrics. Having read a short history of Mexico recently, I was interested. So here I am; loving this song and crying my eyes out for Mexico.
So many memories with this song. My dad's brother who was killed by gangs in his country was named Fernando and my father, who has already passed away, would always say this reminded him of his brother. I love you dad. I still miss you.
My name is Fernando and my family used this song as a homecoming after I was wounded in Baghdad in 2007. Beautiful song, I just shared this video with my son Fernando Jr who is currently serving in the Navy en route to the Middle East.
This song makes me look back in the past and remember my first true love. She practically made me watch that 70's show and when I got to the episode with Eric and Donna dancing to this song, I knew we had to do the same and make this "our song". She came over one starry night and we just danced in my room and held each other tight, easily one of the best moments of my life. Although we broke up a month later, whenever I hear this song come on, I smile and think of her. It's funny how after we split I was messed up for so long, that even the thought of her made me want to cry my eyes out. Now when I think of her I just feel happy for the time we shared together and the love that we had. If you ever read this Pumpkin, I hope all is well and that you're happy. Also, this is a mighty fine song, fucking awesome.
I'm here because as I was walking down the hall at work a Korean lady said I looked familiar. I don't know her, but she smiled and asked if I'm related to Fernando? And I said, "Yes. Yes, and I'm not ashamed to say the roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry..." Okay, the first half was true. But Fernando, whoever you are. Thank you.
Driving back from my Grandma's house at God knows what time... Pitch black outside, my mom asleep in the passenger seat. Nothing but pure bliss as my dad continues to drive off into the night, playing this song, with me in the back in the old baby seat supposedly asleep. But instead, listening along to a great tune.
I'm a Vietnam veteran. Each week several of us get together for coffee. We share our stories. When I left the meeting yesterday, this song came on the radio. The lines "We were young and full of life" and "Now we're old and gray" really hit home.

In the middle of our conversation I happened to say my Surname, its "Fernando" Then Ami told about this song but i have never heard about it before. This is the first time I heard and very emotional one. Very nice song. Even in my country, Sri Lanka had a 30 year Civil war and it was ended in the year 2009. We have many bad experiences during that period. I think this song tries to tell something about freedom and its values. I like this songs and I asked my family members to enjoy this song.
S.R.V. that is hilarious. I come back to this song often when I am feeling sentimental because I had a good friend named Fernando. He passed way too soon in a not good way. He suffered, put it that way. But, he was a ladies man, and when I ran across this song, I could not help but think that wherever my old pal is, he hears this song, and is of course digging on the pretty women singing. This reminds me of the disco episode of that 70s show. I used to listen to abba when i was very little and watch that 70s show when i began highschool. When times get stressful like now, this brings me somewhat calm, takes me back to when" i was young and full of life and not afraid to die"

The song is timeless, it is the song suitable to describe recent (2018-2019) thousands of Hong Kong students fighting for freedom, Te brave students risked their lives and many did die for the unbeatable odd. Many were afraid as Chinese military force marched toward them. A very sad ending but exhibits rare and victorious human spirit . God bless every Hong Kong freedom warrior.
Can you hear the drums fernando? Do you still recall the frightful night we crossed the rio grande? I can see it in your eyes How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land There was something in the air that night The stars were bright, fernando They were shining there for you and me For liberty, fernando Though I never thought that we could lose There's no regret If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, fernando There was something in the air that night The stars were bright, fernando They were shining there for you and me For liberty, fernando Though I never thought that we could lose There's no regret If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, fernando Yes, if I had to do the same again I would, my friend, fernando... People. Why don't you understand that if people like the song because of a show, let them be. They at least found the song, and don't you think they actually liked it enough they searched for it on TH-cam? The song gets attention and people complain that people found it from a show. That's idiotic, if you loved the band and its music, let it get recognized and let people become fans on there own pace.

does this song remains you texas, because of the rio grande that it says?
Partly, but it talks about the war for Texas Independence (I think) then how she loves him, many years later.I've just always loved this song.

Doge The Bounty Hunter So, not everyday, then. Like I said. :)
+Rain Drifter Don't be an ass.

Paula it is great work! Thank from me, an ABBA elderly lover of Moscow, Russia!

Can you hear the drums fernando?
I remember long ago another starry night like this
In the firelight fernando
You were humming to yourself and softly strumming your guitar
I could hear the distant drums
And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar
They were closer now fernando
Every hour every minute seemed to last eternity
I was so afraid fernando
We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die
And I'm not ashamed to say
The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, fernando
Now we're old and grey fernando
And since many years I haven't seen a rifle in your hand
Can you hear the drums fernando?
Do you still recall the frightful night we crossed the rio grande?
I can see it in your eyes
How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, fernando
There was something in the air that night
The stars were bright, fernando
They were shining there for you and me
For liberty, fernando
Though I never thought that we could lose
There's no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, fernando
Yes, if I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, fernando...

Fernando Ricksen💙❤🔴⚪🔵
