My first job was introduced by a high school friend of mine. Never had any job experience before, only had one year of home cooking experience, I showed up on my stage with a new bought classic Victorinox 8 inch chef knife with no guard in my pocket, pointing straight down. It was until one weeks later after that I realized how dangerous that was. I was so lucky to be accepted because I didn't know anything at all, and did really really bad at my stage(worse than anyone I seen later in my career). the people in the restaurant I worked at was so kind and patient to train me and bring me on track.
My first culinary job is at the Meadowview Resort and Convention Center. I'm a line cook and I'm 58 years old. This is my fourth career. I really enjoy the videos. Any tips on setting up a station to be more efficient would be appreciated. Thanks.
My aunt's restaurant in Wallowa County, Oregon. I washed dishes and diced potatoes, AND did hostess work! It was my first experience working in a restaurant.
My first job was when I was 11 working at the dunn Raven inn in Estes Park Colorado it was a great learning experience now I'm 25 and still Loving restaurant life!!
My first job was at a small thai restaurant near my university. Cooking in the kitchen with the old lady who made all the recipes was fun and good experience.
Just started my apprenticeship at a great restaurant in Canberra, Australia. Of course bought a notebook on my first day to jot down all the information thrown at me. Helped me out immensely and I think the Chef was impressed with my organisation.
Your enthusiasm is infectious. I think your channel is going to explode soon. I have been out of the industry of restaurants for a while now working in manufacturing development and your videos give me a boost. Keep it up man.
11 years old. We bought into a bar restaurant. I did prep in the morning. I would go next door and fold pizza boxes and do dishes at the shop next door. Then come back to our place help with dinner then change and was bus boy in up stairs dinning room. I just bought a larger version of the pizza shop. Now it’s time for real fun. Love write in the rain. Thanks bro.
Yes yes yes yes. Notebook is a must, I almost didn't bring one the first day because I thought it was unnecessary. Boy am I glad I brought it because I really did need it for all the ingredients I needed each day and all the prepping to do. Wish my notebook wouldn't have fallen into the dishwasher. I've been waaaayyy more careful with my newest one and love it still. Great video again Justin, big fan!
My first job was at Rotolo's Pizzeria lol. 5 years later and I'm working for one of the best-known and respected chefs in Louisiana. Hopefully going to get a chance to intern at Kato in LA and FINALLY finish culinary school next year! Your channel has helped me in my career more than I can express through this comment!
I'm not in the industry now but my first kitchen job was at Pancho's Mexican buffet making tortillas and sopapillas from scratch. It's where I learned the benefit of having a recipe by weight instead of volume.
I am not actually a professional chef, but an eager and self-taught home cook. My background is in an organizational job so I couldn't agree more and am a big fan of Rite In The Rain. My first job was, as a teenager, with a CNN affiliate in Hong Kong. Also, as a home cook, I have learned a lot from you and love your channel. Would love a video that goes over all of the little things you know from a professional kitchen: how to store herbs for service, how long you can prep certain things in advance, what needs to be done "a la minute." Maybe that's too basic for you to expound on but I, for one, would be into it! :) Thanks for all your content!
Good stuff, Kyle! I'd also be interested in what tips a professional chef would have for home cooks. The standard stuff would be good, but I'm thinking more the stuff that pros know, but home cooks don't. Thanks!
First job wasn't a kitchen position (I was a music teacher in high school) but my first kitchen position was at 10 Barrel Brewing Co. in Bend, Oregon (I was 18). I'm now at my third restaurant (my first fine dining establishment) with opening night tomorrow. I never knew I needed to write so much down in my life(I'm only 21 now)! I'm currently using notecards but after today (or as soon as they're delivered) I'm always going to have a water-proof notebook in my back pocket, no matter what!
My first job at the culinary world was at small bistro in my hometown Bydgoszcz in Poland. I was makeing there our traditional pierogi ;) Hell of a fun especially with the owner, former actor. Learned a lot too.
Yeah it's amazing from how diferent backgrounds people are coming to this industry. Another story is that what waiting stuff is doing besides beingwaiter or waitres. I knew scouts, painters, footbalers, judo practitioners and so on. Cooking isnamazing :D
I’m a chef in an American comfort food playfully reimagined. I have been running the field notes RIR books. Super thin and I keep it in the crease of my wallet. Thanks for the vids.
My first job was in a small restaurant back in my hometown in Cuba(I was 17). I was helping the chef to do prep and plating some dishes during service and at the end of the shift I use to clean everything ,floors, dishes etc. I never thought I would get paid for that job because was part of a summer culinary curse I was taking at the time. And for my surprise, at the end of the first week the chef started paying me the equivalent at 3 or 4 dollars for shift. I felt like a millionaire back then.
My first job was at sonic, mainly because they were the only company who would hire a 17 year old kid with no experience. 15 years later I’m the restaurant chef in Hilton Atlanta. Still have a lot to learn and long way to go.
first kitchen job is where i am now, HOMES brewery in Ann Arbor, MI. this summer i have a stage at a restaurant in Iceland. super excited and thanks for all the great tips!
I’ve been working FOH in pretty much every role for the last 10 plus years but you and Joshua Weissman have inspired me to seek a stage of/when this corona shit ever ends.
Mate , thanks for this channel, I just finish my 1 year college at professional cookery, and start my first work experience, u work is make may life easy, thanks
Thanks for all your tips I’m from Puerto Rico and since I got internet back from hurricane Maria I started watching your videos and I’m very passionate about cooking as you do. Mi first job was at made in itali in my town aguadilla PR
saw ur channel 1 week ago and I am waiting everyday for you to upload new vids, I like your vids, your tips, your strategy at work. Now a fan or ur style and dedication on this industry, Keep it up. Now working on a Fine Dining Restaurant here in italy. I started on Diner- sous chef of a pizzaiolo and now working on fine dine resto.
My first job was when i was 16 in a small traditional italian restaurant called Olivos in NSW Australia. I was incharge of the pizza section making traditional woodfired pizzas. Staff meal was always a banga of a pizza 😁
I love my rite in the rain notebook. I did find their pen worked best with it. Another personal favorite are the click button sharpie. It's great not having to worry about losing the cap.
My first job was at cafe Rio but my first step in restaurant was as a dishwasher at spago by Wolfgang puck and slowly moving up the latter now as a prep in Wolfgang puck bar and grill
I'm not in the biz, but in high school a bunch of my friends and I worked at a place called Gianni's Pizza in Salinas, CA. We made some delicious pizza, and we tossed the doughs by hand, which was pretty novel back then. Oh, and for some reason, we'd always seem to get a large pizza order wrong just before closing on Friday and Saturday nights, and we'd have to take it with us. 😆
I am currently a 1st year student. I was placed at my first establishment in December. I was treated SO BADLY. I couldn't handle it. I was then told by my school that I'm not suited for kitchen life. I was basically kicked out of one of the best cooking schools in South Africa. I took things further and they were forced to place me somewhere else. I was then moved to a 5 star restaurant at a hotel. I've been doing so good that they offered me a permanent job. Keep in mind that I'm still a student. So as from September this year, I will be working as a Demi Chef de Partie plus I'll be going to school on my off days. I was also a dishwasher at times where we had no staff and I got through it. I work my ass off and I don't care if my first establishment hated me. I'm so proud of how far I've come. (I'm also proud that I never fell for those "more the freezer" and 'crop some flour" jokes. Actually I almost fell for the 'if you can swallow a tablespoon of cinnamon I'll give you a 1000 bucks joke).
Haha, this video dropped just in time for my new job at Broken Spanish 😂! I start Friday and I'm terrified to the max, but your guidance and tips helped me so much! I wish you'd come to LA so I could shake your hand and even take you out to lunch or dinner! Keep up the amazing work!
I was a banquet server at a fine dining restaurant when i was 17, fast forward a couple years I finished culinary school and was eventually the KM at said restaurant, when i was 24.
My first kitchen job, Rosen Plaza Hotel in Orlando, FL I was 19 I remember my first couple day on the grill station and burning my hand on a 500 degree sauté pan and the sous chef telling me your going to remember to grab things with your towel now!!!!
Hey man! Nice video as always, my first job was dishwasher at my grands restaurant I was probably 14 or 15, it was my weekend job, love kitchens since!
Damn, I was 11 working at Howard Johnson’s reasturant. In like 79. Was doing all the dirty jobs but that moved on to prep work and taping the kegs in the bar. I was 6’5” since the 4th grade. Lol the keg tapping and the hours I was working at that age got me let go. No hard feelings on either side. Good experience
Awesome tips Justin! I really enjoy hearing about your experiences . To answer the question my first job was at a country club in Oakland of all places .
It's funny, at the place I work now they said I was the first person to show up with a notebook.... but my first was at a pool hall as the janitor. One day the cook didn't show up, so the owner said "go in and start cooking the burgers, just don't burn anything"
Justin Khanna yea. It was systemized to the fullest. But it was fun for the month I was there. Then got thrown on a small open kitchen line and the adrenaline is what sky rocketed me into the industry.
Lmao, this is amazing. I knew I wasn't the only person that did this, everybody in the kitchen laughs at me but if its my shift on Prep the Guys have a easy breezy Dinner service and the guest leave's happy. Happy I found your channel @Justin Khanna while looking for opinions on various Chefs Knifes, excellent content and honest reviews are appreciated. I sub'd after the first video I watched!
Hey! Thank you for this amazing message, Its my first month in a new restaurant and I forgot somethings always, and thats makes me so angry, like: Damn, I´m not making my job right. I will take this compromise to take it more seriously. All that information deserves a better trate.
I'm still in "Europäischer Hof" in Germany. Great place to learn & work at! Ps: it would be awesome if I could get one of these "notebooks" with your signature on it. I'm a huge fan, no kidding^^ Keep rocking Buddy, great content!
FUN FACT! Got my first Rite in the Rain book in the army. The army prepares you to be a great cook. 1. Always carry a pen and paper so you can write stuff down because as fast as information comes, you will forget just as fast. 2. Don’t look like a turd. Your appearance matters. 3. Always be on time. Rule of thumb here is if your on time your late and if your 15 minutes early your on time. 4. Just say yes Chef lol. Having a good attitude and doing your best will pay off in the end. Oh and my first job was at Streamsong Golf Course in Florida.
would newspapers delivery job at grade 9 count as first job? haha my first job was swim instructor and lifeguarding at 16 years old it was great but schedule was brutal
