15:40 -- The contestant thinks Chuck Berry is a country performer, and neither Rayburn nor any of the celebrities correct him. What was with these people and rock and roll? They were proudly ignorant of it in every way. In one episode, they were flummoxed by PEPPER as the answer to SERGEANT (blank). In another, Smokey Robinson was a mystery.
I agree they didn't know much about rock 'n roll, but it would have been _terribly_ bad-mannered of them to correct him on national TV, when it didn't really matter, and he was leaving. edit: And it would be still.
Remember there was no internet, no FM radio, American Bandstand was one of the few national music programs and it was a daytime program. Everything was AM radio Playlist which varied market to market. You could find the music but it wasn't it as easy as it is today.
Shazam!!! Now, there's a first time I wouldn't want to sign up for. poor girl. It was nice of them to give her another chance to win some money. Split end...
Wouldn't you think that contestant would select Hold Your HORSES when that was the one the audience applauded and cheered for? After all they polled a studio audience for the top answer.
M Stephens I know THAT. But that audience is still a large representation of pop culture at the time. That's why their reactions can be indicative of what a previous audience would have said.
Yesand no. There were cases where the contestant chose the one the audience prefered against their better judgement and it was not the top choice. Sure it was there, but 3rd or 2nd. Sometimes audiences are different.
It's great when the contestants go to a "sudden death" tie-breaker. I've never seen a contestant fail to win any money in the Super Match, but the good news was she got another chance by winning $100 for every celebrity she matched.
It was nice that they gave her a second chance, but seems like preferencial treatment. There were those who got the top answer but not the super match and walked away with $500. She strikes out completely and walks away with $600. Not really fair.
The cosmetologist had a casual hairstyle twenty years ahead of its time and utterly natural looking make up. Wonder what she is doing (and wearing) now.
The contestant just said "toilet bowl," which is what I knew was the "definitive answer," and now I'm predicting a tie-breaker round. I love this game. (edit) HAHAHAHAHA! I was right!
@@tannerrichestudios9534 Maybe there was some controversy at the time and we don't know it (so they would rather forget about it)? Or maybe Wikipedia removed it because there was no citation on it? (It happened to me once, first it was marked red and specified that a citation is needed and after a short while it was removed).
It didn't have to be. The contestant picked answers that didn't match. I can understand her saying split ends because of her job. And to tell the truth, I thought hold your BREATH would at least be up there. That was my first answer. But I changed it to HORSES when I heard Fannie's answer.
I don't know. On some of them, it seems like they've used one of their own people to act as as a contestant, to give out stupid responses, so someone else could win.
That was nice they did that for her
That was nice that Gene did a special bonus question for her, because she got shutout in the super match.

Richard usually knew the rock stars names.
Most of them didn't listen to rock/metal, or bands that were popular at that time, especially Gene.

Gene did like the BeeGees. He recognized them once and danced when heard them. He even talked about watching Saturday Night Fever.

contestant looks and sounds just like Richard Dawson
He sure does! I was really hoping that he would win. If he had, then I'm sure that Richard Dawson would have done something hilarious with him.
It is too bizarre.

Debralee's laugh at 2:38 is so adorable.
Debralee was in Police Academy flicks
She was the ultimate 70's girl for me.
I wonder if they did that for her cuz she said she was a single Mom?! There have been others who struck out and they didn't do anything!
Wouldn't you think that contestant would select Hold Your HORSES when that was the one the audience applauded and cheered for? After all they polled a studio audience for the top answer.
HalfFast Haiku - but they didn’t poll THAT audience
M Stephens I know THAT. But that audience is still a large representation of pop culture at the time. That's why their reactions can be indicative of what a previous audience would have said.
HalfFast Haiku - Gotcha.
Yeah, she wasn't as smart as they thought at the beginning..

That is so nice that the little girl doesn’t go home empty-handed. The producers are absolutely wonderful.

She looks like she was in one of those late 80s/early 90s music vids, or movies. Either way, she looks great.
That was a _very_ common hairstyle at the time, especially among teenaged girls and young women.
Laurie is a cutie.
Whose that with the nasty cough? Probably Brett. Yuk
The contestant just said "toilet bowl," which is what I knew was the "definitive answer," and now I'm predicting a tie-breaker round. I love this game. (edit) HAHAHAHAHA! I was right!
Congrats. Nothing happened
This did happen once before, some episodes ago.
I edited the Match game Wikipedia page to include the consolation question but it was removed by someone else.
I added it back in. Not sure why they would remove it as it greatly affected the contestant's outcome

Which I why I never use Wikipedia. It can't be trusted.

WOW! I've never seen someone strike out TWICE before
If he didn't have an English accent, I would have thought he was the twin of Bert Convey.
He did look like Richard in the 60’s.
who you talking about?
I had to look at him twice. I actually thought it WAS saint Richard
@@simon.jacobs.0709The male contestant Jeffrey
I though he was Richard cousin.
Ridged show first time ever seen a ridged match game

what about it makes you think it was rigged?

A female contestant to win for Dawson? And he does not win? You’re kidding right?
You are awful silent when Dawson wins. Double standard troll, methinks you are.
To win
No not kidding
